Spreading gossip in social networks
We study a simple model of information propagation in social networks, where
two quantities are introduced: the spread factor, which measures the average
maximal fraction of neighbors of a given node that interchange information
among each other, and the spreading time needed for the information to reach
such fraction of nodes. When the information refers to a particular node at
which both quantities are measured, the model can be taken as a model for
gossip propagation. In this context, we apply the model to real empirical
networks of social acquaintances and compare the underlying spreading dynamics
with different types of scale-free and small-world networks. We find that the
number of friendship connections strongly influences the probability of being
gossiped. Finally, we discuss how the spread factor is able to be applied to
other situations.Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures, Revtex; Virt.J. of Biol. Phys., Oct.1 200

Quintessential inflation from 5D warped product spaces on a dynamical foliation
Assuming the existence of a 5D purely kinetic scalar field on the class of
warped product spaces we investigate the possibility of mimic both an
inflationary and a quintessential scenarios on 4D hypersurfaces, by
implementing a dynamical foliation on the fifth coordinate instead of a
constant one. We obtain that an induced chaotic inflationary scenario with a
geometrically induced scalar potential and an induced quasi-vacuum equation of
state on 4D dynamical hypersurfaces is possible. While on a constant foliation
the universe can be considered as matter dominated today, in a family of 4D
dynamical hypersurfaces the universe can be passing for a period of accelerated
expansion with a deceleration parameter nearly -1. This effect of the dynamical
foliation results negligible at the inflationary epoch allowing for a chaotic
scenario and becomes considerable at the present epoch allowing a
quintessential scenario.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure Accepted for publication in Modern Physics Letters
Water Replenishment in Agricultural Soils: Dissemination of the IrrigaPot Technology
The challenge confronted by farmers during prolonged periods of soil water stress is to guarantee the restoration of water and maintain the productivity of agricultural crops. Even in regions such as Amazon, the variability in the precipitation regime should be considered in agricultural planning. There are regions in which 80% of annual rainfall is concentrated between December and June. It is exactly during this period of low rainfall that small-scale family-based farmers need technological assistance to guarantee that their crops remain irrigated in order to maintain their income in this rural environment. The IrrigaPot arises as an alternative that is able to access rainfall that has been stored since the rainy season and provide it to plants when the soil is dry. The pots are maintained full with 20 liters of water, and through capillary action the soil maintains them constantly humid. This technology does not require specific knowledge with respect to irrigation regimes and is necessary for the farmer to dedicate his time to replacing water. The technology is totally automated through a simple system using a float, tubes, and connectors that connect a rubber hose to the lids of the pots buried in the soil
Langevin theory of absorbing phase transitions with a conserved magnitude
The recently proposed Langevin equation, aimed to capture the relevant
critical features of stochastic sandpiles, and other self-organizing systems is
studied numerically. This equation is similar to the Reggeon field theory,
describing generic systems with absorbing states, but it is coupled linearly to
a second conserved and static (non-diffusive) field. It has been claimed to
represent a new universality class, including different discrete models: the
Manna as well as other sandpiles, reaction-diffusion systems, etc. In order to
integrate the equation, and surpass the difficulties associated with its
singular noise, we follow a numerical technique introduced by Dickman. Our
results coincide remarkably well with those of discrete models claimed to
belong to this universality class, in one, two, and three dimensions. This
provides a strong backing for the Langevin theory of stochastic sandpiles, and
to the very existence of this new, yet meagerly understood, universality class.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figs, submitted to PR
