    Intimate Partner Aggression Committed by Prison Inmates With Psychopathic Profile

    [Abstract] Psychopathy and intimate partner aggression (IPA) are two concepts that usually appear concomitantly. Male violence toward women is often considered a psychopathic trait that sometimes involves the woman’s homicide by her partner and, at other times, attempted homicide. This phenomenon has been studied by conducting interviews following Hare’s model with 92 men incarcerated under a compliance regime in a Spanish prison (Córdoba). The results detected six explanatory factors of IPA as a result of attempted homicide or homicide: criminal past and delinquency, impulsivity, the need to stand out from others, lack of empathy, manipulation of others, and instability in partner relationships. The first two factors predict a occurrence of high scores on Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist.     There is a wide body of research that has identified the strong links between health behaviors and academic achievement. The media and official agencies strive to convey to schoolchildren and the public the need to show healthy lifestyles. However, it is striking that sleep habits have been considered in few occasions within healthy behaviors to be developed and promoted. Schools should encourage their students to be active because the effect of physical exercise will promote sleep and will positively affect the performance of academic tasks. Then, it is necessary to revitalize and establish the subject of Physical Education and Sport practice properly where the students can meet a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week. This approach will have a direct impact on the school children’s performance and health. Therefore, the key question is to decide whether educational centers must promote active lifestyles where sleep and exercise will be promoting or maintain schools where the body and body intelligence remain an irrelevant matter

    Antecedentes: el síndrome de las plaquetas pegajosas supone trastornos en la agregabilidad de las plaquetas, caracterizados por incremento anormal de las mismas y tendencia a fenómenos vasoclusivos, arteriales y venosos. El mecanismo patogénico no se conoce; su existencia sólo puede determinarse con las pruebas de agregación plaquetaria. Su prevalencia tampoco se conoce pero hay datos que sugieren que es frecuente. Algunos autores opinan que es responsable de 20% de las trombosis arteriales inexplicables y de 13% de las venosas en las que no es posible identificar una causa. Objetivos: revisar la información disponible sobre el síndrome de las plaquetas pegajosas y su trascendencia en México. Conclusiones: el síndrome de las plaquetas pegajosas es la condición de trombofi lia más frecuente en México.     Análisis del uso racional de antihipertensivos en la región de Murcia

    ResumenObjetivoEl objetivo del presente estudio ha sido conocer el patrón de uso de los fármacos antihipertensivos en la Región de Murcia, contrastando los resultados con los datos nacionales (patrón de referencia), pudiendo de esta manera detectar posibles puntos de mejora o establecer hipótesis para posteriores estudios.DiseñoEstudio farmacoepidemiológico (2004 a 2008), conforme a las recomendaciones de la OMS.EmplazamientoRegión de Murcia.ParticipantesCenso poblacional anual.Mediciones principalesEl uso de antihipertensivos se ha medido mediante el cálculo de la dosis diaria definida por mil habitantes-día (DHD).ResultadosLa utilización de antihipertensivos se ha incrementado significativamente de 196,6 DHD a 235,8 DHD. Los antihipertensivos más usados en 2008 eran los ARA-II (38,6%), seguido de los IECA (21,8%). Se ha producido un cambio de tendencia en el uso de los bloqueantes del sistema renina angiotensina (BSRA), con un incremento del 77,5% en los ARA-II y una disminución del 9,5% en los IECA. La comparación con los datos nacionales muestran un menor uso de antihipertensivos y un diferente patrón en la Región de Murcia.ConclusionesSe constata un menor uso de antihipertensivos respecto a España, por lo que podría haber infratratamiento de esta u otras enfermedades cardiovasculares en las que se usan estos fármacos en la Región de Murcia. Se observa un mayor uso de ARA-II, así como un menor uso de IECA. Las diferencias encontradas ponen de manifiesto la necesidad de realizar estudios encaminados a esclarecer sus causas, para lograr un uso más racional y eficiente de los antihipertensivos.AbstractObjectiveThe objective of this study was to determine the pattern of use of antihypertensive drugs in the Murcia Region, comparing the results with the national data, and detecting problems in order to make improvements, or establish hypotheses and to plan new studies.DesignPharmacoepidemiological study (from 2004 to 2008) in accordance with the recommendations from World Heath Organization.Setting: Murcia Region.ParticipansAnnual census of each year.Main measurementsThe use of antihypertensive drugs was measured by the daily doses per 1000 inhabitans-day (DHD).ResultsThe use of antihypertensive drugs has significantly increased from 196.6 DHD to 235.8 DHD. The antihypertensives more used at the end of 2008 were: angiotensin II receptor blockers–ARB- (38.6%) and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors–ACEI- (21.8%). There has been a tendency to change the use of rennin-angiotensin system blockers–RASB-, with an increase in ARB of 77.5% and and a decrease in ACEI 9.5%. The comparison with the national data shows qualitative and quantitative differences in the pattern of antihypertensive drugs used during the studied period.ConclusionsThe use of antihypertensive drugs in Murcia is less than in the rest of Spain. Therefore, this may be due to a problem of under treatment of this illness or other cardiovascular illnesses in the region. A greater use of ARB in Murcia and a lower use of ACEI was observed in Murcia. The differences found suggest that further studies are required to clarify their origins and causes, with the objective of achieving a more rational and efficient use of these drugs

    Temporal changes in mediterranean pine forest biomass using synergy models of ALOS PALSAR-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 Sensors

    Currently, climate change requires the quantification of carbon stored in forest biomass. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data offers a significant advantage over other remote detection measurement methods in providing structural and biomass-related information about ecosystems. This study aimed to develop non-parametric Random Forest regression models to assess the changes in the aboveground forest biomass (AGB), basal area (G), and tree density (N) of Mediterranean pine forests by integrating ALOS-PALSAR, Sentinel 1, and Landsat 8 data. Variables selected from the Random Forest models were related to NDVI and optical textural variables. For 2015, the biomass models with the highest performance integrated ALS-ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 data (R2 = 0.59) by following the model using ALS data (R2 = 0.56), and ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 (R2 = 0.50). The validation set showed that R2 values vary from 0.55 (ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8) to 0.60 (ALS-ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 model) with RMSE below 20 Mg ha−1. It is noteworthy that the individual Sentinel 1 (R2 = 0.49). and Landsat 8 (R2 = 0.47) models yielded equivalent results. For 2020, the AGB model ALOS2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 had a performance of R2 = 0.55 (validation R2 = 0.70) and a RMSE of 9.93 Mg ha−1. For the 2015 forest structural variables, Random Forest models, including ALOS PAL-SAR 2-Sentinel 1 Landsat 8 explained between 30% and 55% of the total variance, and for the 2020 models, they explained between 25% and 55%. Maps of the forests’ structural variables were generated for 2015 and 2020 to assess the changes during this period using the ALOS PALSAR 2-Sentinel 1-Landsat 8 model. Aboveground biomass (AGB), diameter at breast height (dbh), and dominant height (Ho) maps were consistent throughout the entire study area. However, the Random Forest models underestimated higher biomass levels (>100 Mg ha−1) and overestimated moderate biomass levels (30–45 Mg ha−1). The AGB change map showed values ranging from gains of 43.3 Mg ha−1 to losses of −68.8 Mg ha−1 during the study period. The integration of open-access satellite optical and SAR data can significantly enhance AGB estimates to achieve consistent and long-term monitoring of forest carbon dynamics

    Systematic Tools for the Conceptual Design of Inherently Safer Chemical Processes

    Society is continuously facing challenges for safer chemical plants design, which is usually driven by economic criteria during the early steps of the design process, relegating safety concerns to the latest stages. This paper highlights the synergy of merging Process System Engineering tools with inherent safety principles. First, we design a superstructure that comprises several alternatives for streams, equipment, and process conditions, which exhibit different performance of economic and inherently safer indicators, the total annualized cost, and the Dow’s Fire and Explosion Index, respectively. The solution to this multiobjective problem is given by a Pareto set of solutions that indicates the existing trade-off between both objectives.     Dysregulation of the endocannabinoid signaling system in the cerebellum and brainstem in a transgenic mouse model of spinocerebellar ataxia type-3.

    Spinocerebellar ataxia type-3 (SCA-3) is a rare disease but it is the most frequent type within the autosomal dominant inherited ataxias. The disease lacks an effective treatment to alleviate major symptoms and to modify disease progression. Our recent findings that endocannabinoid receptors and enzymes are significantly altered in the post-mortem cerebellum of patients affected by autosomal-dominant hereditary ataxias suggest that targeting the endocannabinoid signaling system may be a promising therapeutic option. Our goal was to investigate the status of the endocannabinoid signaling system in a transgenic mouse model of SCA-3, in the two CNS structures most affected in this disease cerebellum and brainstem. These animals exhibited progressive motor incoordination, imbalance, abnormal gait, muscle weakness, and dystonia, in parallel to reduced in vivo brain glucose metabolism, deterioration of specific neuron subsets located in the dentate nucleus and pontine nuclei, small changes in microglial morphology, and reduction in glial glutamate transporters. Concerning the endocannabinoid signaling, our data indicated no changes in CB2 receptors. By contrast, CB1 receptors increased in the Purkinje cell layer, in particular in terminals of basket cells, but they were reduced in the dentate nucleus. We also measured the levels of endocannabinoid lipids and found reductions in anandamide and oleoylethanolamide in the brainstem. These changes correlated with an increase in the FAAH enzyme in the brainstem, which also occurred in some cerebellar areas, whereas other endocannabinoid-related enzymes were not altered.     Descripción anatomopatológica de un caso de traumatología en puercoespín (Coendou rufescens)

    The porcupine Coendou rufescens is a rodent with arboreal habits and climbing locomotion, but they can move easily on the ground occasionally, which has made them vulnerable to collisions due to being run over in natural areas immersed in urban areas with high traffic flow. This paper presents the case of an adult male porcupine being run over in the north of the Central Cordillera of Colombia, through the implementation of a radiographic and post mortem evaluation. The radiological study showed multiple fractures at the level of the skull, forelimbs, right rib cage, and vertebral bodies. The necropsy showed multiple injuries to the integumentary system, musculoskeletal system, and nervous system, including the presence of polytrauma to the head and neck, with loss of the upper part of the skull and heart rupture at the level of both atria. The most important findings included cardiac burst and skull fragmentation, making it difficult to establish the specific cause of death.El puercoespín Coendou rufescens es un roedor de hábitos arborícolas y locomoción trepadora, pero pueden desplazarse con facilidad en el suelo de manera ocasional, lo cual los hace vulnerables a las colisiones por atropellamiento en áreas naturales inmersas en zonas urbanas con alto flujo vehicular. En este trabajo se presenta el caso de atropellamiento de un puercoespín macho adulto en el norte de la Cordillera Central de Colombia, mediante la implementación de una evaluación radiográfica y post mortem. El estudio radiológico evidenció múltiples fracturas a nivel de cráneo, extremidades anteriores, parrilla costal derecha y los cuerpos vertebrales. La necropsia mostró múltiples lesiones en el sistema tegumentario, músculo esquelético y sistema nervioso, incluyendo la presencia de politraumatismo en cabeza y cuello, con pérdida de la parte superior del cráneo y la ruptura del corazón a nivel de ambos atrios. Los hallazgos más importantes incluyeron el estallido cardíaco y la fragmentación del cráneo, siendo difícil establecer la causa específica de muerte

    Community structure of caprellids (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Caprellidae) on seagrasses from southern Spain

    The community structure of caprellids inhabiting two species of seagrass (Cymodocea nodosa and Zostera marina) was investigated on the Andalusian coast, southern Spain, using uni and multivariate analyses. Three meadows were selected (Almería, AL; Málaga, MA; Cádiz, CA), and changes in seagrass cover and biomass were measured from 2004 to 2005. Four caprellid species were found; the density of Caprella acanthifera, Phtisica marina and Pseudoprotella phasma was correlated to seagrass biomass. No such correlation was found for Pariambus typicus, probably because this species inhabits sediments and does not cling to the seagrass leaves. We recorded a signiWcant decrease in seagrass cover and biomass in MA due to illegal bottom trawling Wsheries. Phtisica marina and P. typicus were favoured by this perturbation and increased their densities after the trawling activities. A survey of reports on caprellids in seagrass meadows around the world showed no clear latitudinal patterns in caprellid densities (ranging from 6 to 1,000 ind/m2 per meadow) and species diversity. While caprellid abundances in seagrass meadows are often very high, the number of species per meadow is low (range 1–5).Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia de España y fondos FEDER de la Unión Europea.
