Understanding science as a device for producing ways of being and truth regimes, this literature review aimed to develop a critical reading of the Brazilian scientific production about parenthood, inspired by the postconstructionist approach to social psychology. The survey was conducted from the Bank of theses and dissertations for the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), from parenting descriptor, comprising the period 1987-2009. The analysis reveals that the paternity of this literature appears linked to the sex-gender dichotomy, and its rupture associated with crises and changes which reiterate gender norms and sexuality. The paternity produces scientific knowledge; outlines strategies and hidden knowledge-power that produce the subject manfather- universal ways of being a father and agreementco-penis-rationality- heterosexuality procreation, enables the visualization of the limits of (in) effectiveness of such inscriptions, making room for production of cracks and change

This study sought to identify, from the feminist framework, actors and actresses involved / in the national policy on sexual and reproductive rights, underway in Brazil. The choice of this policy as a place of research was due to be a theoretical discussion of space and politics with historical trajectory of at least thirty years in the field of health, carried out by different and diverse social actors in a field of knowledge and practices anchored in considered masculine elements: biomedical and formulation of policies. Based on an Operational Model Analysis of Public Policy proposed by Araújo Junior (2000), identified context, actors, process and content of the policy taking as a starting point the dialogue with 23 professionals who, during the research focus (management 2003-2006), occupied important places in the formulation and public debate in this field

Biodiversity in Agricultural Landscapes of Southeastern Brazil

The state of São Paulo, Brazil, is one of the most densely populated and developed areas in South America. Such development is evident both in terms of industrialization and urbanization, as well as in agriculture, which is heavily based on sugar cane, Eucalyptus plantations and livestock. This intense land use has resulted in great alteration of the original land cover and fragmentation of natural ecosystems. For these reasons, it is almost a paradox that jaguar, a species that requires large areas of pristine forest to exist, is still found in some parts of the state of São Paulo. It is possible that wild animals could leave in coexistence with intense land use, or is it the case that such rare encounters with large wild animals in São Paulo will disappear in the near future? All ecologists are aware of the problems of habitat changes caused by humans, but it was not until recent years that researchers started to consider that the land used for production could also serve as an important habitat for many different kinds of wild species. This book is about this new approach to conservation. It also highlights the important role that sciences could and should have in this discussion in order to better understand the problems and propose possible solutions

The Eta Model: Design, Use, and Added Value

    Get PDF
The design of the Eta model goes back to early 1970s, when its original dynamical core was designed following the philosophy of Akio Arakawa of emulating important properties of the atmospheric governing equations. The core’s later major features were invented and implemented in the mid-1980s. Once a comprehensive physics package was added, the model became operational as a regional NWP model in the United States in 1993. Its use for regional climate projections followed later, for the South American region and then for a regional reanalysis over the North American region. Summary of the model’s dynamical core is given, followed by that of its physics package. Results of experiments revealing the model’s ability to generate added value even at large scales when run as a regional climate model (RCM) are summarized. The Eta model is applied on various climate scales seamlessly, from subseasonal, seasonal to multidecadal, from coarse 40 km up to high 5 km resolution. Examples of applications to various socioeconomic sectors, such as for hydropower management, crop yield forecasts, environmental and forest conservation, urban areas management, assessment of natural disaster risks, etc., are given. The Eta RCM capability to reproduce extreme climatic values is pointed out

This article delves into the relationship between Science Diplomacy (SD) and multilateral negotiations, with a specific case study focusing on aluminum production in Jamaica. It highlights the often indirect yet pivotal role of SD in shaping the outcomes of negotiations concerning energy and environmental issues. Although the concept of SD is not always directly at the negotiation table, SD practices act as a bridge between the scientific community and policymakers. The case study analyzes the influence of SD on negotiations related to alumina production in Jamaica, specifically the sale of the Alpart alumina refinery in 2016. It demonstrates how SD diverted negotiations from solely political and commercial considerations to technical discussions on environmental impacts. The crisis initially centered around a coal-based power plant and eventually extended to bauxite extraction, revealing the critical role of affordable energy in aluminum refining. Methodologically, our research design follows the traditional guidelines of a descriptive case study. We employed concepts extracted from both the theory of negotiations and science diplomacy. Leverage power and interests of key actors, including JISCO (Jinquan Iron and Steel Company), the Jamaican government, and the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET), are dissected. Ultimately, it underscores the influence of SD practices on the negotiations, shifting the focus towards environmental concerns and highlighting the importance of informed decision-making in international negotiations. JET played a pivotal role by illuminating the environmental hazards and by influencing the redefinition of power dynamics in the negotiations. Thus, this work exemplifies how SD can reshape negotiations and foster sustainable solutions to complex global challenges.

The roles, responsibilities, and realities of married adolescent males and adolescent fathers: A brief literature review

    Get PDF
From the perspective of developing countries, we know relatively little about married adolescent males and adolescent fathers, and much of what we know is inferred from research with young women or comes from a few specific regions in the world. However, there has been a growing interest in the issue on the part of researchers, policy-makers, and program staff. This interest has coincided with increasing attention in general to men, with gender studies, and with sexual and reproductive health initiatives. Early marriage and early childbearing are much more prevalent among young women than young men, and the negative consequences are more significant among young women. Nonetheless, it is the behavior and attitudes of men, within social contexts where gender hierarchies favor men over women, that often create young women’s vulnerability. Much of the research and literature on adolescent fathers comes from Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. This paper reviews some of the literature on young married men and young fathers, concluding with suggestions for engaging young men to promote better reproductive and sexual health and more favorable life outcomes for married adolescent women and young men

Abstract The article is built after an outlook from the field of analysis of social policies within Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS), focusing health policies for women and AIDS control policies in order to interpret women’s vulnerabilities in the context of HIV and AIDS. It identifies the limits as well as prevention and care strategies adopted by SUS to fight HIV/AIDS, with the adoption of the ideology of the minimal state. The document research conducted in Brazil is a study on how the feminist movement, notably the Feminist Health Network, engaged with the AIDS epidemic through a revision and analysis of their position papers, minutes and other documents, including public policies. This was done from a historical and critical perspective, covering the period from 1992 to 2008. The study interprets the strategic choices of the feminist health movement from the women's health policy and the HIV/AIDS policy. This paper’s perspective is that the meanings of feminist action against the AIDS epidemic are beyond the health field. It exposed progress and limits of feminism against the AIDS epidemic inside a neoliberal capitalist state logic based on patriarchal norms. Keywords: HIV AIDS, feminism, health policies, gender-class-race, state and civil society, social movement
