The aim of this paper was to identify the variables that determine winning or losing in the critical moments of the basketball games. A total of forty one critical moments were analyzed, corresponding to 30 games of the regular season from the Spanish Professional League (ACB, season 2007-2008). Games were selected according to the definition of critical moments (described in the available literature), which corresponded to overtime and the last 5 minutes of games with score differences equal or below to six points. The results revealed better values in the winners in defensive rebounds and successful free-throws

Potassium-Incorporated Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles Modulate Human Dendritic Cell Immune Response to Mycobacterium leprae

The two polar clinical forms of leprosy, termed tuberculoid and lepromatous, have polarized cellular immune responses with complex immunological distinctions. The predominance of DCs in tuberculoid leprosy has been reported, while the lepromatous pattern of illness is associated with weak activation of local populations of DCs. TiO2 nanoparticles have previously been shown to induce maturation of these cells, leading to an inflammatory response similar to adjuvant usage in vaccine administration. We aimed to evaluate the effect of potassium-incorporated Ti oxide nanostructures, namely KTiOxs, in the response of human monocyte-derived DCs to live M. leprae. Human monocytic cell line dual THP-1, which harbors two inducible reporter plasmid systems for transcription factor activation of NF-κB and interferon regulating factor (IRF), was treated with titanium control or with 1 mol/L KOH-treated Ti or 10 mol/L KOH for 24 h. Subsequently, cells were infected with M. leprae. KTiOx nanoparticles increase DC phagocytic activity without inflammation. KTiOx exposure of DCs led to an increase in IRF activation with modulation of the inflammatory response to live M. leprae. It also led to differential secretion of the critical components of innate immune response and the development of cell-mediated immunity against intracellular pathogens. This study demonstrates the effect of nanostructures of KTiOxs and the usefulness of nanoparticle technology in the in vitro activation of human DCs against an infectious disease with a puzzling immune spectrum. Our findings may prompt future therapeutic strategies, such as DC immunotherapy for disseminated and progressive lepromatous lesion

Analysis of acoustic noise spectrum of domestic induction heating systems controlled by phase-accumulator modulators

In domestic induction heating (IH) applications, the modulation technique applied to the inverter has a high influence on the acoustic noise emissions. These noise emissions must be avoided since they may be audible and annoying to the final user. This paper analyzes the acoustic noise emissions that appear when a series half-bridge resonant inverter is operated with a phase-accumulator based modulator. This modulation technique has the advantage of operating in the frequency domain, and it is compared with the classical PWM modulator regarding the audible noise generated. The frequencies of the tones in the acoustic noise spectrum are theoretically calculated from the parameters of the phaseaccumulator based modulator. The SFM (Spectral Flatness Measure) is used to quantify the number of cases in which tones are generated by the modulation. Two techniques are applied to the phase-accumulator based modulator and their effect is tested. Theoretical results are experimentally verified

Conductance control for electromagnetic-compatible induction heating appliances

The design requirements of induction hobs are strongly restricted by efficiency, heating performance, cost, the generation of acoustic noise, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). These two latter topics, cost and EMC, motivated the research presented in this article. The different levels at which the equivalent load of the induction hob is excited generate a variation of the equivalent impedance throughout the grid period even if all the other parameters are kept constant. This can cause a nonsinusoidal consumption of the grid current which goes against the compliance with EMC standards. This article proposes an online controller which controls the conductance seen by the inverter by only modifying the switching frequency throughout the bus period. This greatly reduces the harmonic distortion of the grid current, no matter what is the type of the vessel used. Moreover, it requires neither power-factor correction rectifiers nor any additional circuitry and it has a faster dynamic response with respect to the traditional solutions used in induction hobs due to its higher bandwidth

Tourism‑supported working lands sustain a growing jaguar population in the Colombian Llanos

Understanding large carnivore demography on human-dominated lands is a priority to inform conservation strategies, yet few studies examine long-term trends. Jaguars (Panthera onca) are one such species whose population trends and survival rates remain unknown across working lands. We integrated nine years of camera trap data and tourist photos to estimate jaguar density, survival, abundance, and probability of tourist sightings on a working ranch and tourism destination in Colombia. We found that abundance increased from five individuals in 2014 to 28 in 2022, and density increased from 1.88 ± 0.87 per 100 km2 in 2014 to 3.80 ± 1.08 jaguars per 100 km2 in 2022. The probability of a tourist viewing a jaguar increased from 0% in 2014 to 40% in 2020 before the Covid-19 pandemic. Our results are the first robust estimates of jaguar survival and abundance on working lands. Our findings highlight the importance of productive lands for jaguar conservation and suggest that a tourism destination and working ranch can host an abundant population of jaguars when accompanied by conservation agreements and conflict interventions. Our analytical model that combines conventional data collection with tourist sightings can be applied to other species that are observed during tourism activities. Supplemental files attached below

Revisiting K2-233 spectroscopic time-series with multidimensional Gaussian processes

Detecting planetary signatures in radial velocity time-series of young stars is challenging due to their inherently strong stellar activity. However, it is possible to learn information about the properties of the stellar signal by using activity indicators measured from the same stellar spectra used to extract radial velocities. In this manuscript, we present a reanalysis of spectroscopic High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher data of the young star K2-233, which hosts three transiting planets. We perform a multidimensional Gaussian process regression on the radial velocity and the activity indicators to characterize the planetary Doppler signals. We demonstrate, for the first time on a real data set, that the use of a multidimensional Gaussian process can boost the precision with which we measure the planetary signals compared to a one-dimensional Gaussian process applied to the radial velocities alone. We measure the semi-amplitudes of K2-233 b, c, and d as 1.31+0.81−0.74, 1.81+0.71−0.67, and 2.72+0.66−0.70 m s−1, which translate into planetary masses of 2.4+1.5−1.3, 4.6+1.8−1.7, and 10.3+2.4−2.6 M⊕, respectively. These new mass measurements make K2-233 d a valuable target for transmission spectroscopy observations with JWST. K2-233 is the only young system with two detected inner planets below the radius valley and a third outer planet above it. This makes it an excellent target to perform comparative studies, to inform our theories of planet evolution, formation, migration, and atmospheric evolution

Riscos e controles internos: uma metodologia de mensuração dos níveis de controle de riscos empresariais

This paper presents a control measurement methodology applied in the processes performed by any entity. The methodology is derived from the analysis of the mitigation capabilities of the controls currently in use by the entity. The method enables risk managers to identify which risks require urgent actions to improve the control levels, which risks are already adequately controlled and which ones are in a situation of excessive control. This kind of information can play an important role to improve the application of available internal risk and control management resources in companies. The methodology was applied to a case study and revealed to be a satisfactory tool to assess and identify control levels.
