Speciation and evolution in the <i>Anopheles gambiae</i> complex in the face of widespread introgressive hybridization

This thesis explores the genetic variation and evolution of mosquito populations within the Anopheles gambiae complex (AGC), a closely related group of mosquito species serving as major vectors for the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum . Understanding AGC's genetic diversity is crucial for comprehending its evolutionary history and disease transmission potential. The research primarily focuses on cataloging genetic diversity in 1,142 mosquitoes collected across sub-Saharan Africa, paying special attention to introgression patterns in both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes.Within the nuclear genome, genetic studies identify connectivity patterns among mosquito populations, areas of genetic diversity with potential insecticide resistance, and suitable gene drive targets for innovative vector control strategies. The study also delves into mitochondrial genetic variation within AGC species and its correlation with nuclear genes, shedding light on evolutionary relationships and potential adaptations. Additionally, tools for specimen identification are developed, essential for precise genetic research and effective control measures. A proof-of-concept application for mosquito specimen identification using mitochondrial genomes and publicly available sequence data is presented.The thesis consists of six chapters, covering various aspects of the research. It begins with an overview of speciation research and AGC biology and progresses to population genetics analysis of nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA studies, the development of new methodologies for species tree inference considering gene flow, and the application of mitochondrial DNA for mosquito specimen identification in Southeast Asia. The final chapter summarizes key findings and discusses the integration of theoretical biology and genomics studies

Unsteady coupled convection, conduction and radiation simulations on parallel architectures for combustion applications

Dans l'industrie aéronautique, la génération d'énergie dépend presque exclusivement de la combustion d'hydrocarbures. La meilleure façon d'améliorer le rendement de ces systèmes et de contrôler leur impact environnemental, est d'optimiser le processus de combustion. Avec la croissance continue du de la puissance des calculateurs, la simulation des systèmes complexes est devenue abordable. Jusqu'à très récemment dans les applications industrielles le rayonnement des gaz et la conduction de chaleur dans les solides ont été négligés. Dans ce travail les outils nécessaires à la résolution couplée des trois modes de transfert de chaleur ont été développés et ont été utilisés pour l'étude d'une chambre de combustion d'hélicoptère. On montre que l'inclusion de tous les modes de transfert de chaleur peut influencer la distribution de température dans le domaine. Les outils numériques et la méthodologie de couplage développés ouvrent maintenant la voie à un bon nombre d'applications tant scientifiques que technologiques. ABSTRACT : In the aeronautical industry, energy generation relies almost exclusively in the combustion of hydrocarbons. The best way to improve the efficiency of such systems, while controlling their environmental impact, is to optimize the combustion process. With the continuous rise of computational power, simulations of complex combustion systems have become feasible, but until recently in industrial applications radiation and heat conduction were neglected. In the present work the numerical tools necessary for the coupled resolution of the three heat transfer modes have been developed and applied to the study of an helicopter combustion chamber. It is shown that the inclusion of all heat transfer modes can influence the temperature repartition in the domain. The numerical tools and the coupling methodology developed are now opening the way to a good number of scientific and engineering applications

Instituciones de educación superior y las iniciativas empresariales: experiencia de ITCA-FEPADE

Las Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) tradicionalmente se dedican a la docencia, investigación y proyección social. Actualmente muchas de estas instituciones han aceptado una cuarta función: ser agentes activos en el desarrollo socioeconómico de sus países. Para lograr el cumplimiento de esta función, se desarrollan varias iniciativas, tales como el fomento de la cultura emprendedora, incubadoras de empresas, universidades empresariales, entre otras. Las organizaciones señaladas enfrentan muchos obstáculos, entre los más relevantes se tienen: falta de profesores, organización inadecuada y marcos legales inadecuados. A pesar de todo, las IES muestran mucho interés y hay experiencias interesantes en el tema de las iniciativas empresariales. En este artículo se destaca el enfoque de la Escuela Especializada en Ingeniería ITCA–FEPADE a través del emprendimiento como eje transversal del currículo y el Sistema Dual de aprendizaje

The Recovery of the Natural Desire for Salvation:: Foundations for a Narrative Dynamic Theodicy Model Based on the Concept of Bodily Vulnerability

Dynamic Theodicy (DT) is a broad concept we bring up to designate some modern Philosophical Theology attempts to reconcile the necessary and perfect existence of God with the contingent characteristics of human life. In this paper we analyze such approaches and discuss how they have become incomprehensible because the metaphysical assumptions implicit in these explanations have lost their intrinsic relation to the natural human desire for salvation. In the first part we show Charles Hartshorne's DT-model, arising from the modal logic of perfection, and the modern rational problems of this position in making infinite-necessary Being (God) and finite-contingent being (human) compatible. We note that at the heart of the contradictions in this DT account is a dialectical mode of thinking that makes it difficult to find a correct solution to this dichotomy, and to assume a human desire that could be considered related to lifelong goals. In the second part, supported by the proposal of Hans Urs von Balthasar's DT, we develop the concepts of bodily vulnerability, corporeal intentionality, and natural desire for salvation, which come from an Aristotelian-Thomistic thought. This theory is established in order to build an argument, following Alasdair MacIntyre’s ethical framework, on how to make possible the recovery of a metaphysical and anthropological desire that transcends natural aging and goes beyond death. We conclude that both human dependence and the virtues that arise naturally when human beings decide to seek the good of their transcendent condition, make it possible to recover the natural desire for salvation through divine and human love
