Necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for an ambiskew polynomial algebra A over a Hopf k-algebra R to possess the structure of a Hopf algebra extending that of R, in which the added variables X+ and X- are skew primitive. The coradical filtration is calculated, many examples are described, and properties determined

The structure of chromospheres around late-type giants and supergiants

Observations alpha Tau (K5III) and beta Gru (M2II) made at high resolution are used to confirm line identifications of features blended at low resolution. The high resolution spectra allow selected pairs of lines to be used to find the electron density and the opacity. Methods for determining these factors and the usual emission measure are presented. The electron density and opacity can be used together with the emission measure to place constraints on the structure of the atmosphere. The line formation processes are briefly discussed. Photo-excitation by strong lines appears to be important in these late type atmospheres

My Goal is to bring awareness to the plight of wild creatures who have lost their habitats due to pollution and urban sprawl. I will be making porcelain vessels that influence people to think about their role on the environment. Both terrestrial and aquatic life has been impacted by humans through poaching, non-traditional medical practices, and human activity in the ocean. By making impressionable clay urns, I hope to bring light to these issues that affect animals. Through research I have been enthused by the steep historical forms from Greece, China, and Europe. Their exceptional skill and knowledge of the potter\u27s wheel has significantly inspired my work. The impact of the atmospheric firings creates unique effects that captivate the viewer. The pieces are affected by the influence of Soda-ash, which is introduced into the kiln at peek temperatures, These colors and textures produced from the soda kiln give each pieces unique and beautiful qualities. My hope is that people feel more connected tot he natural world after seeing my vessels and want to help better our planet

Descriptive Analysis of Mental Health Needs of Nontraditional Black and White Students

Introduction: Mental health seeking behaviors among nontraditional students, particularly Black students, is an area that should be examined closely with care and strategy. There are a plethora of factors that pose risks to nontraditional students completing their education. There is something to take note of when 38% of nontraditional students leave their first year compared to 16% of traditional students (National Center for Education Statistics, 2012). Objective: This study assessed the risk factors and demographic variables associated with mental health seeking behaviors in Black nontraditional students vs. White nontraditional students at Georgia State University. Methods: Descriptive demographic data were used to find a statistical difference and likelihood of occurrences of the variables: sex, race, age, reduction of alcohol or drug use, financial stress, and suicide consideration. Results: Black students reported experiencing higher levels of stress due to finances. When looking at counseling utilization for nontraditional pupils, more White students sought prior therapy before their arrival to Georgia State University (25.3%) compared to Black students (13.4%). Black students were more likely than Whites to attempt suicide 1-5 times, but overall, there were minimal differences between races in the overall percentage. Examining if Black male veterans wished to reduce drinking and drug use more than White males, a two-sample hypothesis test was used (P-value=.21 using alpha .05). I failed to reject the null hypothesis, meaning the proportions are the same and there is no statistical difference between races. Blacks vs. Whites who sought counseling before or after college had a P-value of .00308. This test is significant at the alpha level .05 therefore we reject the null hypothesis that the proportions are the same. We conclude that there is a significant difference in the proportion of blacks who sought counseling before or after college from whites who sought counseling before or after college. I also looked at Blacks vs. Whites who never sought counseling. The P value is 0.00. This test is significant at the alpha .05 level thus we reject the null hypothesis. There is a significant difference between the proportions of Blacks vs Whites that have never sought counseling. Conclusions: Although there are mental health disparities that exist across the population of nontraditional students, a focus should be on nontraditional Black students. Universities should increase the budget for counseling services to expand supporting staff to accommodate individuals with needs. Nontraditional students have higher risks of possibly not graduating and ensuring the appropriate resources are in place is critical as a part of success

Current Recommendations for Lower Body Aerobic Exercise in Chronic Unilateral Stroke - A Systematic Review

    Get PDF
Background: Chronic stroke patients (i.e., \u3e six months since the onset of stroke) continue to experience persistent gait complications. Once formal physical therapy concludes, exercise professionals can implement exercise interventions designed to improve quality of life and reduce risk of secondary stroke. This systematic review aimed to evaluate whether lower-body aerobic exercise transferred to gait improvements in chronic unilateral stroke. Methods: An electronic search of the following databases were undertaken: MEDLINE, CINHAL, Ovid, and SPORTdiscus. Two independent reviewers selected articles using predetermined inclusion criteria: adults (i.e., \u3e18 years old) who suffered from a chronic unilateral stroke. Additionally, all included studies were longitudinal exercise interventions (i.e., \u3e four weeks) of lower-body aerobic training with pre- and post- intervention assessments of gait (e.g., field and laboratory measures). Results: A total of 19 studies were included. The three most common field measures utilized by researchers were six-minute walk test (68%), 10-meter walk test (42%), and Timed Up and Go (TUG) (31%). Treadmill intervention (n=12) improved gait field testing from 23.68% to 31.73%, while elliptical interventions (n=1) improved from 0.88% to 11.56% and cycling intervention(n=5) improved from 6.13% to 24.44%. The aquatic intervention (n=1) only performed the TUG with a 51.14% average improvement. Discussion: The results suggest that not all aerobic training modalities elicit the same improvements in gait field assessments. Conclusion: Gait improvements can occur following aerobic training; however, treadmill interventions produced greater averages of improvements in chronic unilateral stroke

Educators’ Perceptions of Implementing the Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence: A Multiple-Case Study

The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to describe educators’ perceptions concerning the implementation of the Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence (SPIRE) as an intervention to help students meet state proficiency standards at a large suburban school district in Utah. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory served as the theoretical framework to guide an inquiry into educators’ beliefs and how well they executed the SPIRE intervention to answer the central research question, “How do educators explain their perceptions of the use of SPIRE in the classroom?” This study utilized a multiple-case study design that captured the perception of 12 educators who served in the role of literacy coach, district literacy specialist Title 1 Coordinator, special education teacher, or educational aid. Participants were selected through purposeful sampling to provide rich information about the phenomenon. Data were collected, analyzed, and triangulated through multiple sources: written letters, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups. The data were coded to formulate important ideas and to identify themes. The themes that emerged were educators’ understanding of SPIRE, the practice of SPIRE as an intervention, benefits of SPIRE, barriers to SPIRE, and professional development. Based on the findings, educators perceived that the implementation of SPIRE improved the struggling students’ reading scores on state proficiency standards

Discrimination, Coping, and Depression among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men

Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) have elevated risk for depression compared to the general population. BMSM’s capacity to cope with these experiences is not well understood. Increased understanding of how multiple forms of discrimination contribute to depression and how BMSM cope with discrimination can better inform interventions. Data come from 3,510 BMSM who attended Black Pride events in six U.S. cities from 2015-2017. Participants completed a health survey that ascertained their psychosocial health and resiliency profiles. Using multivariable logistic regression models, we tested the associations between type-specific discrimination (race, sexuality, HIV status) and depression. We then conducted sub-analyses to determine if coping attenuated the association between type-specific discrimination and depression. Our findings indicated that increased odds of depression among BMSM were associated with discrimination based on race (aOR=1.38, 95% CI = 1.08-1.76), sexual orientation (aOR=1.32, 95% CI = 1.01-1.72), and HIV status (aOR=1.53, 95% CI = 1.08-2.17). Sub-analyses indicated coping had inconsistent moderation effects between type-specific discrimination and depression. Our findings demonstrate that impact of various forms of discrimination on BMSM’s mental health and the mitigating role of coping. Interventions should seek to address depression by reducing experiences of discrimination and building coping resiliency
