Modelling red blood cell optical trapping by machine learning improved geometrical optics calculations
Optically trapping red blood cells allows for the exploration of their biophysical properties, which are affected in many diseases. However, because of their nonspherical shape, the numerical calculation of the optical forces is slow, limiting the range of situations that can be explored. Here we train a neural network that improves both the accuracy and the speed of the calculation and we employ it to simulate the motion of a red blood cell under different beam configurations. We found that by fixing two beams and controlling the position of a third, it is possible to control the tilting of the cell. We anticipate this work to be a promising approach to study the trapping of complex shaped and inhomogeneous biological materials, where the possible photodamage imposes restrictions in the beam power
Born Effective Charges of Barium Titanate: band by band decomposition and sensitivity to structural features
The Born effective charge tensors of Barium Titanate have been calculated for
each of its 4 phases. Large effective charges of Ti and O, also predicted by
shell model calculations and made plausible by a simplified model, reflect the
partial covalent character of the chemical bond. A band by band decomposition
confirms that orbital hybridization is not restricted to Ti and O atoms but
also involves Ba which appears more covalent than generally assumed. Our
calculations reveal a strong dependence of the effective charges on the atomic
positions contrasting with a relative insensitivity on isotropic volume

Exploring the Nature of Weak Chandra Sources near the Galactic Centre
We present results from the first near-IR imaging of the weak X-ray sources
discovered in the Chandra/ACIS-I survey (Wang et al. 2002) towards the Galactic
Centre (GC). These ~800 discrete sources, which contribute significantly to the
GC X-ray emission, represent an important and previously unknown population
within the Galaxy. From our VLT observations we will identify likely IR
counterparts to a sample of the hardest sources, which are most likely X-ray
binaries. With these data we can place constraints on the nature of the

Effects of Bolus vs. Metered Rehydration Rates on Fluid Retention and Hydration Efficiency using 150% Fluid Replacement. Austin State University Nacogdoches TX. 75962 Purpose: This study assessed differences in urine production using bolus vs. metered ingestion fluid consumption during post-exercise rehydration. Methods: Using light to moderate activity in an environmentally controlled chamber (35°C), 9 male subjects were dehydrated by ~ 2% body weight. Following dehydration, counterbalanced rehydration trials (water) were performed in which two different methods of rehydrating; metered consumption (18.75% of total volume every 30mins for 4 hours) and bolus consumption (150% of total volume within 1 hour) were utilized. Urine production was evaluated and reported each hour during an eight-hour period following exercise to evaluate net fluid balance and hydration efficiency (fluid consumed vs. fluid retained). Results: Paired samples T-test revealed no significant differences (p=.94) between the two rehydration methods for hydration efficiency (bolus 41.5% vs. metered 42%) or net fluid balance (mean urine production: bolus 1347ml vs. metered 1337ml). Conclusions: Previous research using 100% fluid replacement (water) has revealed that metered consumption improves hydration efficiency and net fluid balance. However, the current findings suggest that any advantages gained through varying fluid consumption rates may be nullified by larger total rehydration volumes (150%)
Non-Occlusive Retinal Vascular Inflammation and Role of Red Blood Cell Deformability in Birdshot Chorioretinopathy
PURPOSE: To investigate differences in red blood cell (RBC) deformability between birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR) subjects and matched controls, and to postulate its relationship with lack of vascular occlusion in BCR. METHODS: In a single center, prospective, non-randomized mechanistic study, blood samples were collected from eight healthy controls and nine BCR patients, and subjected to biochemical and hematological tests, as well as RBC indices assessment using dual-beam optical tweezers. RESULTS: The mean age of the controls was 52.37 ± 10.70 years and BCR patients was 53.44 ± 12.39 years. Initial cell size (Io) for the controls was 8.48 ± 0.25 μm and 8.87 ± 0.31 μm for BCR RBCs (p = 0.014). The deformability index (DI) for the controls was 0.066 ± 0.02 and that for BCR RBCs was 0.063 ± 0.03 (p = 0.441). CONCLUSION: There was no statistically significant difference in DI between RBCs from BCR and healthy controls. This may explain the rare occurrence of retinal vascular occlusion despite the underlying vasculitic pathophysiology of BCR
Density-Polarization Functional Theory of the response of a periodic insulating solid to an electric field.
The response of an infinite, periodic, insulating, solid to an
infinitesimally small electric field is investigated in the framework of
Density Functional Theory. We find that the applied perturbing potential is not
a unique functional of the periodic density change~: it depends also on the
change in the macroscopic {\em polarization}. Moreover, the dependence of the
exchange-correlation energy on polarization induces an exchange-correlation
electric field. These effects are exhibited for a model semiconductor. We also
show that the scissor-operator technique is an approximate way of bypassing

Novel coronary heart disease risk factors at 60-64 years and life course socioeconomic position: The 1946 British birth cohort.
Social disadvantage across the life course is associated with a greater risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and with established CHD risk factors, but less is known about whether novel CHD risk factors show the same patterns. The Medical Research Council National Survey of Health and Development was used to investigate associations between occupational socioeconomic position during childhood, early adulthood and middle age and markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein, interleukin-6), endothelial function (E-selectin, tissue-plasminogen activator), adipocyte function (leptin, adiponectin) and pancreatic beta cell function (proinsulin) measured at 60-64 years. Life course models representing sensitive periods, accumulation of risk and social mobility were compared with a saturated model to ascertain the nature of the relationship between social class across the life course and each of these novel CHD risk factors. For interleukin-6 and leptin, low childhood socioeconomic position alone was associated with high risk factor levels at 60-64 years, while for C-reactive protein and proinsulin, cumulative effects of low socioeconomic position in both childhood and early adulthood were associated with higher (adverse) risk factor levels at 60-64 years. No associations were observed between socioeconomic position at any life period with either endothelial marker or adiponectin. Associations for C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, leptin and proinsulin were reduced considerably by adjustment for body mass index and, to a lesser extent, cigarette smoking. In conclusion, socioeconomic position in early life is an important determinant of several novel CHD risk factors. Body mass index may be an important mediator of these relationships
