    The wide spread occurrence of mummified seal and penguin carcasses tens of kilometres from the open ocean is an interesting phenomenon occurring in the Antarctic Dry Valleys. Mummified seal carcasses were first reported by Scott’s expedition in 1903 (Scott 1969), and live seals and seal carcasses have since been reported many kilometres from the nearest ice-free ocean. Seal carcasses found in the McMurdo Dry Valleys are predominantly crabeater seals (Lobodon carcinophaga (Hombron & Jacquinot)) with a smaller number of Weddell seals, (Leptonychotes weddellii (Lesson)), also reported. Here we present only the second published report of a leopard seal carcass from the McMurdo Dry Valleys

Our prototype implementation connects an IBM RS/6000 to a SONET-based ATM network carrying data at the OC-3c rate of 155Mbps. We have measured application-to-network data rates of up to 130 Mbps

    The Milky Way bar/bulge in proper motions: a 3D view from VIRAC & Gaia

    © 2019 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.We have derived absolute proper motions of the entire Galactic bulge region from VIRAC and Gaia. We present these as both integrated on-sky maps and, after isolating standard candle red clump (RC) stars, as a function of distance using RC magnitude as a proxy. These data provide a new global, 3-dimensional view of the Milky Way barred bulge kinematics. We find a gradient in the mean longitudinal proper motion, μl\mu_l, between the different sides of the bar, which is sensitive to the bar pattern speed. The split RC has distinct proper motions and is colder than other stars at similar distance. The proper motion correlation map has a quadrupole pattern in all magnitude slices showing no evidence for a separate, more axisymmetric inner bulge component. The line-of-sight integrated kinematic maps show a high central velocity dispersion surrounded by a more asymmetric dispersion profile. σμl/σμb\sigma_{\mu_l} / \sigma_{\mu_b} is smallest, 1.1\sim1.1, near the minor axis and reaches 1.4\sim1.4 near the disc plane. The integrated pattern signals a superposition of bar rotation and internal streaming motion, with the near part shrinking in latitude and the far part expanding. To understand and interpret these remarkable data, we compare to a made-to-measure barred dynamical model, folding in the VIRAC selection function to construct mock maps. We find that our model of the barred bulge, with a pattern speed of 37.5 kms1kpc1\mathrm{km \, s^{-1} \, kpc^{-1}}, is able to reproduce all observed features impressively well. Dynamical models like this will be key to unlocking the full potential of these data.Peer reviewe

    We have previously reported a design for a host interface board intended to connect workstations to ATM networks, and an implementation that was underway. Since then, we have made some modifications to the hardware implementation, and implemented software support. Our prototype connects an IBM RS/6000 to a SONET-based ATM network carrying data at the OC-3c rate of 155Mbps. In this paper, we discuss an experimental evaluation of the interface and supporting software. Our experiments uncovered an unexpected bottleneck in providing high bandwidth to application processes, and we suggest a number of possible improvements to workstation architectures to address this bottleneck

    Operating Systems Support for End-to-End Gbps Networking

    This paper argues that workstation host interfaces and operating systems are a crucial element in achieving end-to-end Gbps bandwidths for applications in distributed environments. We describe several host interface architectures, discuss the interaction between the interface and host operating system, and report on an ATM host interface built at the University of Pennsylvania. Concurrently designing a host interface and software support allows careful balancing of hardware and software functions. Key ideas include use of buffer management techniques to reduce copying and scheduling data transfers using clocked interrupts. Clocked interrupts also aid with bandwidth allocation. Our interface can deliver a sustained 130 Mbps bandwidth to applications, roughly OC-3c link speed. Ninety-three percent of the host hardware subsystem throughput is delivered to the application with a small measured impact on other applications processing

    Effect of silver content on the structure and antibacterial activity of silver-doped phosphate-based glasses

    Staphylococcus aureus can cause a range of diseases, such as osteomyelitis, as well as colonize implanted medical devices. In most instances the organism forms biofilms that not only are resistant to the body's defense mechanisms but also display decreased susceptibilities to antibiotics. In the present study, we have examined the effect of increasing silver contents in phosphate-based glasses to prevent the formation of S. aureus biofilms. Silver was found to be an effective bactericidal agent against S. aureus biofilms, and the rate of silver ion release (0.42 to 1.22 µg·mm–2·h–1) from phosphate-based glass was found to account for the variation in its bactericidal effect. Analysis of biofilms by confocal microscopy indicated that they consisted of an upper layer of viable bacteria together with a layer (20 µm) of nonviable cells on the glass surface. Our results showed that regardless of the silver contents in these glasses (10, 15, or 20 mol%) the silver exists in its +1 oxidation state, which is known to be a highly effective bactericidal agent compared to that of silver in other oxidation states (+2 or +3). Analysis of the glasses by 31P nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and high-energy X-ray diffraction showed that it is the structural rearrangement of the phosphate network that is responsible for the variation in silver ion release and the associated bactericidal effectiveness. Thus, an understanding of the glass structure is important in interpreting the in vitro data and also has important clinical implications for the potential use of the phosphate-based glasses in orthopedic applications to deliver silver ions to combat S. aureus biofilm infections

    Doing the right thing for one's children: deciding whether to take the genetic test for Huntington's disease as a moral dilemma

    This is a qualitative examination of candidates’ decision-making in relation to the genetic test for Huntington's disease (HD). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine participants who were asked about factors influencing their decision whether to take up predictive genetic testing. Transcripts of interviews were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis to elicit emergent themes. A key factor for participants was to do the right thing for their children. Interestingly this factor presents a moral dilemma to participants and can direct them either towards or away from testing. This paper offers a detailed examination of how participants think through this dilemma

    Event Signaling Within Higher Performance Network Systems

    The afterburner ATM link Adapter has allowed us to evaluate three event-signaling schemes: polling, traditional interrupts and the clocked interrupts first investigated in our operating system work in AURORA. The schemes are evaluated in the context of a single-copy TCP/IP stack. The experimental results indicate that clocked interrupts can provide throughput comparable with traditional interrupts for dedicated machines (up to over 144 Mbps, the highest TCP/IP/ATM throughput reported), and better performance when the machines are loaded with an artificial workload. Polling, implemented to be used with an unmodified netperf measurement tool, was competitive for small TCP/IP socket buffer sizes (¡32KB). We concluded that clocked interrupts may be preferable for applications requiring high throughput on systems with heavy processing workloads, such as servers
