    Nitrogen fertiliser may pay on tropical grass pastures

    Low productivity in sown grass pastures due to a lack of available soil nitrogen can reduce beef production by up to 50% across Queensland. The feasibility of strategic nitrogen (N) fertiliser applications to address these losses was assessed by desktop analyses using data from published studies, local fertiliser trials and expert opinion. These analyses suggest that applying nitrogen to rundown sown grass pastures can produce dramatic increases in dry matter yield and animal production. However, high and consistent response rates in pasture productivity, stocking rates and growth rate of cattle were required for the application of nitrogen fertiliser to be profitable. For the suggested 100 kg N/ha fertiliser rate: average gross margins in the year of application were calculated to increase by 121-217% when dry matter yield responses of 40 kg DM/kg N (i.e. an additional 4000 kg/ha) and an additional liveweight gain of 0.2 kg per adult equivalent (AE)/day can be achieved (i.e. an extra 70 kg AE/year). These economics were very sensitive to the assumed response rates in pasture growth, stocking rate and liveweight gain and did not account for uncertainty in climate and beef prices. New research is proposed to re-assess the responses used in this analysis that are largely based on research 25-40 years ago when soils were generally more fertile and pastures less rundown

    A Post-Succession Analysis of Factors Influencing Coaching Success in NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball – Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

    Based on the reciprocal determinism component of social learning theory, a total of 736 men’s NCAA Division I basketball coaching changes between 1999 and 2014 were examined to establish which factors were related to conference success following a coaching change. Results from an exploratory latent class analysis indicated that many demographic, environmental, and experiential variables assumed to be important in hiring a new coach are insignificant. However, a program’s previous success, individual coaching ability, and previous coach vacancy circumstance are all significantly related to conference winning differential after a coaching change. Results also indicated a regression to the mean occurs after most coaching changes except for the most elite programs. Pragmatically, however, findings show relatively small increments in winning or losing following a coaching change, suggesting that the impact of a coach is often overstated. Stakeholders can use this information to evaluate coaches, programs, and hiring practices in men’s Division I basketball

    The ELAIS Deep X-ray Survey

    We present initial follow-up results of the ELAIS Deep X-ray Survey which is being undertaken with the Chandra and XMM-Newton Observatories. 235 X-ray sources are detected in our two 75 ks ACIS-I observations in the well-studied ELAIS N1 and N2 areas. 90% of the X-ray sources are identified optically to R=26 with a median magnitude of R=24. We show that objects which are unresolved optically (i.e. quasars) follow a correlation between their optical and X-ray fluxes, whereas galaxies do not. We also find that the quasars with fainter optical counterparts have harder X-ray spectra, consistent with absorption at both wavebands. Initial spectroscopic follow-up has revealed a large fraction of high-luminosity Type 2 quasars.     Packing of Compressible Granular Materials

    3D Computer simulations and experiments are employed to study random packings of compressible spherical grains under external confining stress. Of particular interest is the rigid ball limit, which we describe as a continuous transition in which the applied stress vanishes as (\phi-\phi_c)^\beta, where \phi is the (solid phase) volume density. This transition coincides with the onset of shear rigidity. The value of \phi_c depends, for example, on whether the grains interact via only normal forces (giving rise to random close packings) or by a combination of normal and friction generated transverse forces (producing random loose packings). In both cases, near the transition, the system's response is controlled by localized force chains. As the stress increases, we characterize the system's evolution in terms of (1) the participation number, (2) the average force distribution, and (3) visualization techniques.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Phys.     Why Effective Medium Theory Fails in Granular Materials

    Experimentally it is known that the bulk modulus, K, and shear modulus, \mu, of a granular assembly of elastic spheres increase with pressure, p, faster than the p^1/3 law predicted by effective medium theory (EMT) based on Hertz-Mindlin contact forces. To understand the origin of these discrepancies, we perform numerical simulations of granular aggregates under compression. We show that EMT can describe the moduli pressure dependence if one includes the increasing number of grain-grain contacts with p. Most important, the affine assumption (which underlies EMT), is found to be valid for K(p) but breakdown seriously for \mu(p).     Nicotinamide mononucleotide supplementation reverses vascular dysfunction and oxidative stress with aging in mice

    We tested the hypothesis that supplementation of nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), a key NAD (+) intermediate, increases arterial SIRT1 activity and reverses age‐associated arterial dysfunction and oxidative stress. Old control mice (OC) had impaired carotid artery endothelium‐dependent dilation (EDD) (60 ± 5% vs. 84 ± 2%), a measure of endothelial function, and nitric oxide (NO)‐mediated EDD (37 ± 4% vs. 66 ± 6%), compared with young mice (YC). This age‐associated impairment in EDD was restored in OC by the superoxide ([Formula: see text]) scavenger TEMPOL (82 ± 7%). OC also had increased aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV, 464 ± 31 cm s(−1) vs. 337 ± 3 cm s(−1)) and elastic modulus (EM, 6407 ± 876 kPa vs. 3119 ± 471 kPa), measures of large elastic artery stiffness, compared with YC. OC had greater aortic [Formula: see text] production (2.0 ± 0.1 vs. 1.0 ± 0.1 AU), nitrotyrosine abundance (a marker of oxidative stress), and collagen‐I, and reduced elastin and vascular SIRT1 activity, measured by the acetylation status of the p65 subunit of NFκB, compared with YC. Supplementation with NMN in old mice restored EDD (86 ± 2%) and NO‐mediated EDD (61 ± 5%), reduced aPWV (359 ± 14 cm s(−1)) and EM (3694 ± 315 kPa), normalized [Formula: see text] production (0.9 ± 0.1 AU), decreased nitrotyrosine, reversed collagen‐I, increased elastin, and restored vascular SIRT1 activity. Acute NMN incubation in isolated aortas increased NAD (+) threefold and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) by 50%. NMN supplementation may represent a novel therapy to restore SIRT1 activity and reverse age‐related arterial dysfunction by decreasing oxidative stress

    EFFECTS OF MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON GRASSLAND BIRDS: HORNED LARK

    Information on the habitat requirements and effects of habitat management on grassland birds were summarized from information in more than 4,000 published and unpublished papers. A range map is provided to indicate the relative densities of the species in North America, based on Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data. Although birds frequently are observed outside the breeding range indicated, the maps are intended to show areas where managers might concentrate their attention. It may be ineffectual to manage habitat at a site for a species that rarely occurs in an area. The species account begins with a brief capsule statement, which provides the fundamental components or keys to management for the species. A section on breeding range outlines the current breeding distribution of the species in North America, including areas that could not be mapped using BBS data. The suitable habitat section describes the breeding habitat and occasionally microhabitat characteristics of the species, especially those habitats that occur in the Great Plains. Details on habitat and microhabitat requirements often provide clues to how a species will respond to a particular management practice. A table near the end of the account complements the section on suitable habitat, and lists the specific habitat characteristics for the species by individual studies. A special section on prey habitat is included for those predatory species that have more specific prey requirements. The area requirements section provides details on territory and home range sizes, minimum area requirements, and the effects of patch size, edges, and other landscape and habitat features on abundance and productivity. It may be futile to manage a small block of suitable habitat for a species that has minimum area requirements that are larger than the area being managed. The Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) is an obligate brood parasite of many grassland birds. The section on cowbird brood parasitism summarizes rates of cowbird parasitism, host responses to parasitism, and factors that influence parasitism, such as nest concealment and host density. The impact of management depends, in part, upon a species’ nesting phenology and biology. The section on breeding-season phenology and site fidelity includes details on spring arrival and fall departure for migratory populations in the Great Plains, peak breeding periods, the tendency to renest after nest failure or success, and the propensity to return to a previous breeding site. The duration and timing of breeding varies among regions and years. Species’ response to management summarizes the current knowledge and major findings in the literature on the effects of different management practices on the species. The section on management recommendations complements the previous section and summarizes specific recommendations for habitat management provided in the literature. If management recommendations differ in different portions of the species’ breeding range, recommendations are given separately by region. The literature cited contains references to published and unpublished literature on the management effects and habitat requirements of the species. This section is not meant to be a complete bibliography; a searchable, annotated bibliography of published and unpublished papers dealing with habitat needs of grassland birds and their responses to habitat management is posted at the Web site mentioned below

    Rapid N_H changes in NGC 4151

    We have analyzed the two longest (elapsed time > 3 days) BeppoSAX observations of the X-ray brightest Seyfert galaxy, NGC 4151, to search for spectral variability on time-scales from a few tens of ksec to years. We found in both cases highly significant spectral variability below ~ 6 keV down to the shortest time-scales investigated. These variations can be naturally explained in terms of variations in the low energy cut-off due to obscuring matter along the line of sight. If the cut-off is modeled by two neutral absorption components, one fully covering the source and the second covering only a fraction of the source, the shortest time-scale of variability of a few days constrains the location of the obscuring matter to within 3.4 X 10^4 Schwarzschild radii from the central X-ray source. This is consistent with the distance of the Broad Emission Line Region, as inferred from reverberation mapping, and difficult to reconcile with the parsec scale dusty molecular torus of Krolik & Begelman (1988). We have also explored a more complex absorption structure, namely the presence of an ionized absorber. Although the behaviour of the ionization parameter is nicely consistent with the expectations, the results are not completely satisfactory from the statistical point of view. The overall absorption during the 2001 December observation is lower than in all other historical observations with similar 2-10 keV flux.
