    The Modulation of the Phenotype of Human-Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

    The effect of dexamethasone on human non-small cell lung carcinoma in vitro and in vivo was investigated. Dexamethasone caused a significant reduction in growth rate in most of the cell lines at normal passage densities with the exception of H125 which had an increased growth rate in the presence of dexamethasone. In both cases the effect was dose dependent. Clonogenicity as a monolayer was increased by dexamethasone in all cell lines investigated except H125. Cloning efficiency in agar of all the cell lines examined was reduced by dexamethasone in a dose dependant manner. Significant levels of glucocorticoid receptor were found in all cell lines investigated. PA activity was lowered by dexamethasone in all cell lires except H125 where it was raised though not significantly

    Preliminary Evaluation of a 10 kW Hall Thruster

    A 10 kW Hall thruster was characterized over a range of discharge voltages from 300-500 V and a range of discharge currents from 15-23 A. This corresponds to power levels from a low of 4.6 kW to a high of 10.7 kW. Over this range of discharge powers, thrust varied from 278 mN to 524 mN, specific impulse ranged from 1644 to 2392 seconds, and efficiency peaked at approximately 59%. A continuous 40 hour test was also undertaken in an attempt to gain insight with regard to long term operation of the engine. For this portion of the testing the thruster was operated at a discharge voltage of 500 V and a discharge current of 20 A. Steady-state temperatures were achieved after 3-5 hrs and very little variation in performance was detected

    Discovery of Four High Proper Motion L Dwarfs, Including a 10 pc L Dwarf at the L/T Transition

    We discover four high proper motion L dwarfs by comparing the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). WISE J140533.32+835030.5 is an L dwarf at the L/T transition with a proper motion of 0.85+/-0.02" yr^-1, previously overlooked due to its proximity to a bright star (V=12 mag). From optical spectroscopy we find a spectral type of L8, and from moderate-resolution J band spectroscopy we find a near-infrared spectral type of L9. We find WISE J140533.32+835030.5 to have a distance of 9.7+/-1.7 pc, bringing the number of L dwarfs at the L/T transition within 10 pc from six to seven. WISE J040137.21+284951.7, WISE J040418.01+412735.6, and WISE J062442.37+662625.6 are all early L dwarfs within 25 pc, and were classified using optical and low-resolution near-infrared spectra. WISE J040418.01+412735.6 is an L2 pec (red) dwarf, a member of the class of unusually red L dwarfs. We use follow-up optical and low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy to classify a previously discovered (Castro & Gizis 2012) fifth object WISEP J060738.65+242953.4 as an (L8 Opt/L9 NIR), confirming it as an L dwarf at the L/T transition within 10 pc. WISEP J060738.65+242953.4 shows tentative CH_4 in the H band, possibly the result of unresolved binarity with an early T dwarf, a scenario not supported by binary spectral template fitting. If WISEP J060738.65+242953.4 is a single object, it represents the earliest onset of CH_4 in the H band of an L/T transition dwarf in the SpeX Library. As very late L dwarfs within 10 pc, WISE J140533.32+835030.5 and WISEP J060738.65+242953.4 will play a vital role in resolving outstanding issues at the L/T transition.Comment: 45 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Charge-coupled devices with fast timing for astrophysics and space physics research

    A charge coupled device is under development with fast timing capability (15 millisecond full frame readout, 30 microsecond resolution for measuring the time of individual pixel hits). The fast timing CCD will be used in conjunction with a CsI microfiber array or segmented scintillator matrix detector to detect x rays and gamma rays with submillimeter position resolution. The initial application will be in conjunction with a coded aperture hard x ray/gamma ray astronomy instrument. We describe the concept and the readout architecture of the device

    Essential role for proteinase-activated receptor-2 in arthritis

    Using physiological, pharmacological, and gene disruption approaches, we demonstrate that proteinase-activated receptor-2 (PAR-2) plays a pivotal role in mediating chronic inflammation. Using an adjuvant monoarthritis model of chronic inflammation, joint swelling was substantially inhibited in PAR-2-deficient mice, being reduced by more than fourfold compared with wild-type mice, with virtually no histological evidence of joint damage. Mice heterozygous for PAR-2 gene disruption showed an intermediate phenotype. PAR-2 expression, normally limited to endothelial cells in small arterioles, was substantially upregulated 2 weeks after induction of inflammation, both in synovium and in other periarticular tissues. PAR-2 agonists showed potent proinflammatory effects as intra-articular injection of ASKH95, a novel synthetic PAR-2 agonist, induced prolonged joint swelling and synovial hyperemia. Given the absence of the chronic inflammatory response in the PAR-2-deficient mice, our findings demonstrate a key role for PAR-2 in mediating chronic inflammation, thereby identifying a novel and important therapeutic target for the management of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis

    Disk Loss and Disk Renewal Phases in Classical Be Stars I: Analysis of Long-Term Spectropolarimetric Data

    (Abridged) Classical Be stars occasionally transition from having a gaseous circumstellar disk (''Be phase'') to a state in which all observational evidence for the presence of these disks disappears (''normal B-star phase''). We present one of the most comprehensive spectropolarimetric views to date of such a transition for two Be stars, pi Aquarii and 60 Cygni. 60 Cyg's disk loss episode was characterized by a monotonic decrease in emission strength over a time-scale of 1000 days, consistent with the viscous time-scale of the disk, assuming alpha is 0.14. pi Aqr's disk loss was episodic in nature and occurred over a time-scale of 2440 days. An observed time lag between the behavior of the polarization and H-alpha in both stars indicates the disk clearing proceeded in an ''inside-out'' manner. We determine the position angle of the intrinsic polarization to be 166.7 +/- 0.1 degrees for pi Aqr and 107.7 +/- 0.4 degrees for 60 Cyg, and model the observed polarization during the quiescent diskless phase of each star to determine the interstellar polarization along the line of sight. Minor outbursts observed during the quiescent phase of each star shared similar lifetimes as those previously reported for mu Cen, suggesting that the outbursts represent the injection and subsequent viscous dissipation of individual blobs of material into the inner circumstellar environments of these stars. We also observe deviations from the mean intrinsic polarization position angle during polarization outbursts in each star, indicating deviations from axisymmetry. We propose that these deviations might be indicative of the injection (and subsequent circularization) of new blobs into the inner disk, either in the plane of the bulk of the disk material or in a slightly inclined (non-coplanar) orbit.Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures; accepted in Ap

    Hybrid artificial neural network models for effective prediction and mitigation of urban roadside NO2 pollution

    Traffic-related air pollution has been a serious concern amongst policy-makers and the public due to its physiological and environmental impacts. An early warning system based on accurate forecasting tools must therefore be implemented to circumvent the adverse effects of exposure to major air pollutants. A multilayer perceptron neural network was trained and developed using air pollution and meteorological data over a two-year period from a monitoring site in Marylebone Road, Central London to predict roadside concentration values of NO2 24 hours ahead. Several hybrid models were also developed by applying feature selection techniques such as stepwise regression, principal component analysis, and Classification and Regression Trees to the neural network model. Most roadside pollutant variables, e.g., oxides of nitrogen, were found to be significant in predicting NO2. The statistical results reveal overall prediction superiority of the hybrid models to the standalone neural network model
