    The Downstream Effects of Bail and Pretrial Detention on Racial Disparities in Incarceration

    Bail and pretrial detention decisions may have important consequences for racial disparities in incarceration rates. Poor minority defendants who are unable to post bail and get released from jail before trial may be more likely to plead guilty and accept longer sentences of incarceration. Racial disparities in incarceration sentences may then reflect a combination of differences in the seriousness of a defendant’s case, criminal history, and economic resources to pay bail. This study examines the extent to which bail decision-making and pretrial detention explain Black-White disparities in criminal adjudications and sentences in the Delaware courts from 2012 to 2014. Over 80% of all criminal defendants have a bond imposed on them before their adjudication. Almost a third of cases involve pretrial detention. After controlling for measured differences in a variety of case characteristics, including severity of charges and criminal histories, cash-only bail and pretrial detention increase a defendant’s likelihood of conviction and pleading guilty, being incarcerated, and receiving a longer incarceration sentence. Bail and pretrial detention also contribute to 30% to 47% of the explained Black-White disparity in these court dispositions. Careful examination of cash-only bail, bail amount, and pretrial detention policies may help reduce racial disparities in incarceration

    The Effects of Elevated Concentrations of Carbon Dioxide and Ozone on Potatoe (Solanum tuberosum L.) Yield

    End of Project ReportPotatoes (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Bintje) were grown in open top chambers at Teagasc, Crops Research Centre, Oak Park, Carlow and exposed to ambient and elevated concentrations of CO2 in combination with ambient and elevated concentrations of O3 in the 1998 and 1999 growing seasons. Exposure to elevated concentrations of O3 caused visual damage to the leaves of the potato plants in both years of the study. In 1999, ozone damage to leaves was significantly reduced in the presence of elevated concentrations of CO2. Stomatal conductance was reduced by elevated CO2 and was reduced further by the elevated O3 treatment under elevated CO2. Exposure to elevated CO2 increased tuber fresh weight yield by 32% in both years of the study. The yield increase was attributable to larger tuber sizes and not to an increase in the number of tubers. Tuber yield was unaffected by elevated O3 at ambient concentrations of CO2 in both years of the study. In 1999, the yield increase induced by elevated CO2 was substantially reduced by the presence of elevated O3

    Simple model for tuberculosis in cattle and badgers

    As an aid to the study of bovine tuberculosis (TB), a simple model has been developed of an epidemic involving two species, cattle and badgers. Each species may infect the other. The proportion of animals affected is assumed relatively small so that the usual nonlinear aspects of epidemic theory are avoided. The model is used to study the long-run and transient effect on cattle of culling badgers and the effect of a period without routine testing for TB, such as occurred during the 2001 epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease in Great Britain. Finally, by examining the changes in cattle TB over the last 15 years, and with some other working assumptions, it is estimated that the net reproduction number of the epidemic is 1.1.     Influence of general anaesthesia on slow waves of intracranial pressure.

    OBJECTIVE: Slow vasogenic intracranial pressure (ICP) waves are spontaneous ICP oscillations with a low frequency bandwidth of 0.3-4 cycles/min (B-waves). B-waves reflect dynamic oscillations in cerebral blood volume associated with autoregulatory cerebral vasodilation and vasoconstriction. This study quantifies the effects of general anaesthesia (GA) on the magnitude of B-waves compared to natural sleep and conscious state. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The magnitude of B-waves was assessed in 4 groups of 30 patients each with clinical indications for ICP monitoring. Normal pressure hydrocephalus patients undergoing Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) infusion studies in the conscious state (GROUP A) and under GA (GROUP B), and hydrocephalus patients undergoing overnight ICP monitoring during physiological sleep (GROUP C) were compared to deeply sedated traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients with well-controlled ICP during the first night of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay (GROUP D). RESULTS: A total of 120 patients were included. During CSF infusion studies, the magnitude of slow waves was higher in conscious patients ( GROUP A: 0.23+/-0.10 mm Hg) when compared to anaesthetised patients ( GROUP B: 0.15+/-0.10 mm Hg; p = 0.011). Overnight magnitude of slow waves was higher in patients during natural sleep (GROUP C: 0.20+/-0.13 mm Hg) when compared to TBI patients under deep sedation (GROUP D: 0.11+/- 0.09 mm Hg; p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: GA and deep sedation are associated with a reduced magnitude of B-waves. ICP monitoring carried out under GA is affected by iatrogenic suppression of slow vasogenic waves of ICP. Accounting for the effects of anaesthesia on vasogenic waves may prevent the misidentification of potential shunt-responders as non-responders.This is the author accepted manuscript.     Different plant viruses induce changes in feeding behavior of specialist and generalist aphids on common bean that are likely to enhance virus transmission

    Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV), and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) cause serious epidemics in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), a vital food security crop in many low-to-medium income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Aphids transmit these viruses “non-persistently,” i.e., virions attach loosely to the insects' stylets. Viruses may manipulate aphid-host interactions to enhance transmission. We used direct observation and electrical penetration graph measurements to see if the three viruses induced similar or distinct changes in feeding behaviors of two aphid species, Aphis fabae and Myzus persicae. Both aphids vector BCMV, BCMNV, and CMV but A. fabae is a legume specialist (the dominant species in bean fields) while M. persicae is a generalist that feeds on and transmits viruses to diverse plant hosts. Aphids of both species commenced probing epidermal cells (behavior optimal for virus acquisition and inoculation) sooner on virus-infected plants than on mock-inoculated plants. Infection with CMV was especially disruptive of phloem feeding by the bean specialist aphid A. fabae. A. fabae also experienced mechanical stylet difficulty when feeding on virus-infected plants, and this was also exacerbated for M. persicae. Overall, feeding on virus-infected host plants by specialist and generalist aphids was affected in different ways but all three viruses induced similar effects on each aphid type. Specifically, non-specialist (M. persicae) aphids encountered increased stylet difficulties on plants infected with BCMV, BCMNV, or CMV, whereas specialist aphids (A. fabae) showed decreased phloem ingestion on infected plants. Probing and stylet pathway activity (which facilitate virus transmission) were not decreased by any of the viruses for either of the aphid species, except in the case of A. fabae on CMV-infected bean, where these activities were increased. Overall, these virus-induced changes in host-aphid interactions are likely to enhance non-persistent virus transmission, and data from this work will be useful in epidemiological modeling of non-persistent vectoring of viruses by aphids

The use of these polymers has grown significantly in recent years as industry shifts away from unsustainable fossil fuel resources and looks towards a softer and more sustainable environmental approach. This review article covers the main classes of biopolymers: Polysaccharides, proteins, microbial-derived and lignin. In addition, an overview of the leading biomedical applications of biopolymers is also provided, which includes tissue engineering, medical implants, wound dressings, and the delivery of bioactive molecules. The future clinical applications of biopolymers are vast, due to their inherent biocompatibility, biodegradability and low immunogenicity.     Risk of anemia with metformin use in type 2 diabetes:A MASTERMIND study

    Objective: To evaluate the association between metformin use and anemia risk in type 2 diabetes, and the time-course for this, in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) and real-world population data. Research Design and Methods: Anemia was defined as a hemoglobin measure of <11 g/dL. In the RCTs A Diabetes Outcome Progression Trial (ADOPT; n = 3,967) and UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS; n = 1,473), logistic regression was used to model anemia risk and nonlinear mixed models for change in hematological parameters. In the observational Genetics of Diabetes Audit and Research in Tayside Scotland (GoDARTS) population (n = 3,485), discrete-time failure analysis was used to model the effect of cumulative metformin exposure on anemia risk. Results: In ADOPT, compared with sulfonylureas, the odds ratio (OR) (95% CI) for anemia was 1.93 (1.10, 3.38) for metformin and 4.18 (2.50, 7.00) for thiazolidinediones. In UKPDS, compared with diet, the OR (95% CI) was 3.40 (1.98, 5.83) for metformin, 0.96 (0.57, 1.62) for sulfonylureas, and 1.08 (0.62, 1.87) for insulin. In ADOPT, hemoglobin and hematocrit dropped after metformin initiation by 6 months, with no further decrease after 3 years. In UKPDS, hemoglobin fell by 3 years in the metformin group compared with other treatments. At years 6 and 9, hemoglobin was reduced in all treatment groups, with no greater difference seen in the metformin group. In GoDARTS, each 1 g/day of metformin use was associated with a 2% higher annual risk of anemia. Conclusions: Metformin use is associated with early risk of anemia in individuals with type 2 diabetes, a finding consistent across two RCTs and replicated in one real-world study. The mechanism for this early fall in hemoglobin is uncertain, but given the time course, is unlikely to be due to vitamin B12 deficiency alone

    FMDV replicons encoding green fluorescent protein are replication competent

    The study of replication of viruses that require high bio-secure facilities can be accomplished with less stringent containment using non-infectious 'replicon' systems. The FMDV replicon system (pT7rep) reported by Mclnerney et al. (2000) was modified by the replacement of sequences encoding chloramphenicol acetyl-transferase (CAT) with those encoding a functional L proteinase (Lpro) linked to a bi-functional fluorescent/antibiotic resistance fusion protein (green fluorescent protein/puromycin resistance, [GFP-PAC]). Cells were transfected with replicon-derived transcript RNA and GFP fluorescence quantified. Replication of transcript RNAs was readily detected by fluorescence, whilst the signal from replication-incompetent forms of the genome was >2-fold lower. Surprisingly, a form of the replicon lacking the Lpro showed a significantly stronger fluorescence signal, but appeared with slightly delayed kinetics. Replication can, therefore, be quantified simply by live-cell imaging and image analyses, providing a rapid and facile alternative to RT-qPCR or CAT assays

    Characteristics of US public schools with reported cases of novel influenza A (H1N1)

    Objective The 2009 pandemic of influenza A (H1N1) has disproportionately affected children and young adults, resulting in attention by public health officials and the news media on schools as important settings for disease transmission and spread. We aimed to characterize US schools affected by novel influenza A (H1N1) relative to other schools in the same communities. Methods A database of US school-related cases was obtained by electronic news media monitoring for early reports of novel H1N1 influenza between April 23 and June 8, 2009. We performed a matched case–control study of 32 public primary and secondary schools that had one or more confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza and 6815 control schools located in the same 23 counties as case schools. Results Compared with controls from the same county, schools with reports of confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza were less likely to have a high proportion of economically disadvantaged students (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 0.385; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.166–0.894) and less likely to have older students (aOR 0.792; 95% CI 0.670–0.938).     Extreme deuterium enrichment in stratospheric hydrogen and the global atmospheric budget of H_2

    Molecular hydrogen (H_2) is the second most abundant trace gas in the atmosphere after methane (CH_4). In the troposphere, the D/H ratio of H_2 is enriched by 120‰ relative to the world's oceans. This cannot be explained by the sources of H_2 for which the D/H ratio has been measured to date (for example, fossil fuels and biomass burning). But the isotopic composition of H_2 from its single largest source—the photochemical oxidation of methane—has yet to be determined. Here we show that the D/H ratio of stratospheric H2 develops enrichments greater than 440‰, the most extreme D/H enrichment observed in a terrestrial material. We estimate the D/H ratio of H_2 produced from CH_4 in the stratosphere, where production is isolated from the influences of non-photochemical sources and sinks, showing that the chain of reactions producing H_2 from CH_4 concentrates D in the product H_2. This enrichment, which we estimate is similar on a global average in the troposphere, contributes substantially to the D/H ratio of tropospheric H_2
