I present preliminary results on the search for hch_c in its ηcÎł\eta_c\gamma and J/ψπ0J/\psi\pi^0 decay modes. We observe an excess of \eta_c\gammaeventsnear3526MeVthathasaprobability events near 3526 MeV that has a probability {\cal P} \sim 0.001toarisefrombackgroundfluctations.Theresonanceparametersare to arise from background fluctations. The resonance parameters are M=3525.8 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.2 MeV,MeV, \Gamma\leq1MeV,and 1 MeV, and 10.6\pm 3.7\pm3.4(br) < \Gamma_{\bar{p}p}B_{\eta_c\gamma} < 12.8\pm 4.8\pm4.5(br) eV.WefindnoeventexcesswithinthesearchregionintheeV. We find no event excess within the search region in the J/\psi\pi^0$ mode.Comment: Presented at the 6th International Conference on Hyperons, Charm and Beauty Hadrons (BEACH 2004), Chicago(Il), June 27-July 3,200

    Interference Study of the chi_c0 (1^3P_0) in the Reaction Proton-Antiproton -> pi^0 pi^0

Fermilab experiment E835 has observed proton-antiproton annihilation production of the charmonium state chi_c0 and its subsequent decay into pi^0 pi^0. Although the resonant amplitude is an order of magnitude smaller than that of the non-resonant continuum production of pi^0 pi^0, an enhanced interference signal is evident. A partial wave expansion is used to extract physics parameters. The amplitudes J=0 and 2, of comparable strength, dominate the expansion. Both are accessed by L=1 in the entrance proton-antiproton channel. The product of the input and output branching fractions is determined to be B(pbar p -> chi_c0) x B(chi_c0 -> pi^0 pi^0)= (5.09 +- 0.81 +- 0.25) x 10^-7.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by PRL (July 2003

Precision measurements of the total and partial widths of the psi(2S) charmonium meson with a new complementary-scan technique in antiproton-proton annihilations

We present new precision measurements of the psi(2S) total and partial widths from excitation curves obtained in antiproton-proton annihilations by Fermilab experiment E835 at the Antiproton Accumulator in the year 2000. A new technique of complementary scans was developed to study narrow resonances with stochastically cooled antiproton beams. The technique relies on precise revolution-frequency and orbit-length measurements, while making the analysis of the excitation curve almost independent of machine lattice parameters. We study the psi(2S) meson through the processes pbar p -> e+ e- and pbar p -> J/psi + X -> e+ e- + X. We measure the width to be Gamma = 290 +- 25(sta) +- 4(sys) keV and the combination of partial widths Gamma_e+e- * Gamma_pbarp / Gamma = 579 +- 38(sta) +- 36(sys) meV, which represent the most precise measurements to date.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables. Fracking in the UK press: threat dynamics in an unfolding debate

    Get PDF
Shale gas is a novel source of fossil fuel which is extracted by induced hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”. This article examines the socio-political dimension of fracking as manifested in the UK press at three key temporal points in the debate on the practice. Three newspaper corpora were analysed qualitatively using Thematic Analysis and Social Representations Theory. Three overarching themes are discussed: “April–May 2011: From Optimism to Scepticism”; “November 2011: (De-)Constructing and Re-Constructing Risk and Danger”; “April 2012: Consolidating Social Representations of Fracking”. In this article, we examine the emergence of and inter-relations between competing social representations, discuss the dynamics of threat positioning and show how threat can be re-construed in order to serve particular socio-political ends in the debate on fracking

Academic self-concept, gender and single-sex schooling

This paper assesses gender differences in academic self-concept for a cohort of children born in 1958 (the National Child Development Study). We address the question of whether attending single-sex or co-educational schools affected students’ perceptions of their own academic abilities (academic self-concept). Academic selfconcept was found to be highly gendered, even controlling for prior test scores. Boys had higher self-concepts in maths and science, and girls in English. Single-sex schooling reduced the gender gap in self-concept, while selective schooling was linked to lower academic self-concept overall

Search for the Proton Decay Mode proton to neutrino K+ in Soudan 2

We have searched for the proton decay mode proton to neutrino K+ using the one-kiloton Soudan 2 high resolution calorimeter. Contained events obtained from a 3.56 kiloton-year fiducial exposure through June 1997 are examined for occurrence of a visible K+ track which decays at rest into mu+ nu or pi+ pi0. We found one candidate event consistent with background, yielding a limit, tau/B > 4.3 10^{31} years at 90% CL with no background subtraction.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 3 tables and 3 figures, Accepted by Physics Letters

Rapid Tooling Method for Soft Customized Removable Oral Appliances

    Get PDF
Traditionally oral appliances i.e. removable orthodontic appliances, bite splints and snoring / sleep apnea appliances are made with alginate impressions and wax registrations. Our aim was to describe the process of manufacturing customized oral appliances with a new technique i.e. rapid tooling method. The appliance should ideally be custom made to match the teeth. An orthodontic patient, scheduled for conventional orthodontic treatment, served as a study subject. After a precise clinical and radiographic examination, the approach was to digitize the patient’s dental arches and then to correct them virtually by computer. Additive manufacturing was then used to fabricate a mould for a soft customized appliance. The mould was manufactured using stereolithography from Somos ProtoGen O-XT 18420 material. Casting material for the mould to obtain the final appliance was silicone. As a result we managed to create a customized soft orthodontic appliance. Also, the accuracy of the method was found to be adequate. Two versions of the described device were manufactured: one with small and one with moderate orthodontic force. The study person also gave information on the subjective patient adaptation aspects of the oral appliance

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to Three-Jet Cross Sections with Massive Quarks

We calculate the cross section for e+e−e^+ e^- annihilation into three jets for massive quarks at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, both on and off the ZZ resonance. Our computation allows the implementation of any jet clustering algorithm. We give results for the three-jet cross section involving bb quarks for the JADE and Durham algorithm at c.m. energies s=mZ\sqrt s = m_Z. We also discuss a three-jet observable that is sensitive to the mass of the bb quark.Comment: 11 pages, using revtex; 6 postscript figures included. Figures have been change

    Observation of exotic meson production in the reaction π−p→ηâ€Čπ−p \pi^{-} p \to \eta^{\prime} \pi^- p at 18 GeV/c

An amplitude analysis of an exclusive sample of 5765 events from the reaction π−p→ηâ€Čπ−p\pi^{-} p \to \eta^{\prime} \pi^- p at 18 GeV/c is described. The ηâ€Čπ−\eta^{\prime} \pi^- production is dominated by natural parity exchange and by three partial waves: those with JPC=1−+,2++,J^{PC} = 1^{-+}, 2^{++}, and 4++4^{++}. A mass-dependent analysis of the partial-wave amplitudes indicates the production of the a2(1320)a_2(1320) meson as well as the a4(2040)a_4(2040) meson, observed for the first time decaying to ηâ€Čπ−\eta^{\prime}\pi^-. The dominant, exotic (non-qqˉ)q\bar{q}) 1−+1^{-+} partial wave is shown to be resonant with a mass of 1.597±0.010−0.010+0.0451.597 \pm 0.010^{+0.045}_{-0.010} GeV/c^2 and a width of 0.340±0.040±0.0500.340 \pm 0.040 \pm 0.050 GeV/c^2 . This exotic state, the π1(1600)\pi_1(1600), is produced with a tt dependence which is different from that of the a2(1320)a_2(1320) meson, indicating differences between the production mechanisms for the two states.Comment: 5 pages with 4 figure
