    Clinical comparison of the Bausch & Lomb keratometer to the Alcon Renaissance series handheld keratometer

    The newly introduced Renaissance Handheld keratometer from Alcon was compared for accuracy and ease or use with the B&L keratometer. Keratometer readings were obtained from 200 eyes (l00 subjects), as well as 4 steel balls and a contactometer. A high correlation between the two instruments was found on patients with clinically significant cylinder (\u3e1.0D), with respect to both power and axis determination.     Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo evaluar de qué manera los termoplásticos determinan la propiedad física, térmica y mecánicas en su estructura del pavimento poroso prefabricado a base de termoplásticos – PoliPlasTher Road, la metodología del tipo de investigación de acuerdo a su fin es aplicada con un enfoque cuantitativo con el diseño que es experimental y el nivel de investigación es explicativo causal. Como resultados tenemos que de los diseños de mezcla los mejores promedios fueron del segundo diseño obteniendo lo siguientes resultados, densidad de 0.941 g/cm3 , con un Tg de 85 ºC y un Tm de 120 ºC, Fmáx. de 631.524 N, σ de 7.8 MPa y elongación de 3.86 %, en la flexión un esfuerzo de 8.33 MPa y una permeabilidad menor a 0.5 litros/metros cuadrados/día. En conclusión, se tiene que las propiedades mecánicas mejoraron cuando se añadió un 10% más de PE-LD, pero estas proporciones de mezclas no presentaron porosidad en su proceso de laminación por compresión

    Controlled Porosity in Ferroelectric BaTiO₃ Photoanodes

    The use of ferroelectric polarization to promote electron-hole separation has emerged as a promising strategy to improve photocatalytic activity. Although ferroelectric thin films with planar geometry have been largely studied, nanostructured and porous ferroelectric thin films have not been commonly used in photo-electrocatalysis. The inclusion of porosity in ferroelectric thin films would enhance the surface area and reactivity, leading to a potential improvement of the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. Herein, the preparation of porous barium titanate (pBTO) thin films by a soft template-assisted sol-gel method is reported, and the control of porosity using different organic/inorganic ratios is verified by the combination of scanning electron microscopy and ellipsometry techniques. Using piezoresponse force microscopy, the switching of ferroelectric domains in pBTO thin films is observed, confirming that the ferroelectric polarization is still retained in the porous structures. In addition, the presence of porosity in pBTO thin films leads to a clear improvement of the PEC response. By electrochemical poling, we also demonstrated the tuning of the PEC performance of pBTO thin films via ferroelectric polarization. Our work offers a simple and low-cost approach to control the morphology optimization of ferroelectric thin films, which could open up the development of materials with great potential for PEC applications

    Optimum nutritional strategies for cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation (BACPR)

    Nutrition has a central role in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) yet only relatively recently has food been regarded as a treatment, rather than as an adjunct to established medical and pharmacotherapy. As a field of research, nutrition science is constantly evolving making it difficult for patients and practitioners to ascertain best practice. This is compounded further by the inherent difficulties in performing double-blind randomised controlled trials. This paper covers dietary patterns that are associated with improved cardiovascular outcomes, including the Mediterranean Diet but also low-carbohydrate diets and the potential issues encountered with their implementation. We suggest there must be a refocus away from macronutrients and consideration of whole foods when advising individuals. This approach is fundamental to practice, as clinical guidelines have focussed on macronutrients without necessarily considering their source, and ultimately people consume foods containing multiple nutrients. The inclusion of food-based recommendations aids the practitioner to help the patient make genuine and meaningful changes in their diet. We advocate that the cardioprotective diet constructed around the traditional Mediterranean eating pattern (based around vegetables and fruits, nuts, legumes, and unrefined cereals, with modest amounts of fish and shellfish, and fermented dairy products) is still important. However there are other approaches that can be tried, including low-carbohydrate diets. We encourage practitioners to adopt a flexible dietary approach, being mindful of patient preferences and other comorbidities that may necessitate deviations away from established advice, and advocate for more dietitians in this field to guide the multi-professional team

    Reprogramming of sorghum proteome in response to sugarcane aphid infestation

    Sugarcane aphid (SCA; Melanaphis sacchari Zehntner) is a key piercing-sucking pest of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) that cause significant yield losses. While feeding on host plants, complex signaling networks are invoked from recognition of insect attack to induction of plant defenses. Consequently, these signaling networks lead to the production of insecticidal compounds or limited access of nutrients to insects. Previously, several studies were published on the transcriptomics analysis of sorghum in response to SCA infestation, but no information is available on the physiological changes of sorghum at the proteome level. We used the SCA resistant sorghum genotype SC265 for the global proteomics analysis after 1 and 7 days of SCA infestation using the TMT-plex technique. Peptides matching a total of 4211 proteins were identified and 158 proteins were differentially expressed at day 1 and 7. Overall, proteome profiling of SC265 after SCA infestation at days 1 and 7 revealed the suppression of plant defense-related proteins and upregulation of plant defense and signaling-related proteins, respectively. The plant defense responses based on proteome data were validated using electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique to observe changes in aphid feeding. Feeding behavior analyses revealed that SCA spent significantly longer time in phloem phase on SCA infested plants for day 1 and lesser time in day 7 SCA infested sorghum plants, compared to their respective control plants. Overall, our study provides insights into underlying mechanisms that contribute to sorghum resistance to SCA

    Texture analysis with a time-of-flight neutron strain scanner

    A time-of-flight (TOF) neutron strain scanner is a white-beam instrument optimized to measure diffractograms at precise locations within bulky specimens, typically along two perpendicular sample orientations. Here, a method is proposed that exploits the spatial resolution (∼1 mm) provided by such an instrument to determine in a nondestructive manner the crystallographic texture at selected locations within a macroscopic object. The method is based on defining the orientation distribution function (ODF) of the crystallites from several incomplete pole figures, and it has been implemented on ENGIN-X, a neutron strain scanner at the ISIS facility in the UK. This method has been applied to determine the texture at different locations of Al alloy plates welded along the rolling direction and to study a Zr2.5%Nb pressure tube produced for a CANDU nuclear power plant. For benchmarking, the results obtained with this instrument for samples of ferritic steel, copper, Al alloys and Zr alloys have been compared with measurements performed using conventional X-ray diffractometers and more established neutron techniques. For cases where pole figure coverage is incomplete, the use of TOF neutron transmission measurements simultaneously performed on the specimens is proposed as a simple and powerful test to validate the resulting ODF.Fil: Malamud, Florencia. El presente trabajo, seenfoca en integrar información obtenida por RFID de libros vigentesal sistema de administración bibliotecario de una Institución deEducación Superior (IES), a través de una aplicación web de códigoabierto, con el objetivo de que los operadores puedan realizar elproceso de inventario del material bibliográfico de forma eficiente.Para ello, se realiza el levantamiento de requerimientos, luego eldesarrollo del sistema integrador y finalmente pruebas de funcionamiento.Como resultado se evidenció que utilizando tecnologíaRFID la gestión de inventario de la biblioteca mejora aproximadamenteel 70%

    Estimation of free-roaming domestic dog population size: Investigation of three methods including an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based approach

    Population size estimation is performed for several reasons including disease surveillance and control, for example to design adequate control strategies such as vaccination programs or to estimate a vaccination campaign coverage. In this study, we aimed at investigating the possibility of using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to estimate the size of free-roaming domestic dog (FRDD) populations and compare the results with two regularly used methods for population estimations: foot-patrol transect survey and the human: dog ratio estimation. Three studies sites of one square kilometer were selected in Petén department, Guatemala. A door-to-door survey was conducted in which all available dogs were marked with a collar and owner were interviewed. The day after, UAV flight were performed twice during two consecutive days per study site. The UAV's camera was set to regularly take pictures and cover the entire surface of the selected areas. Simultaneously to the UAV's flight, a foot-patrol transect survey was performed and the number of collared and non-collared dogs were recorded. Data collected during the interviews and the number of dogs counted during the foot-patrol transects informed a capture-recapture (CR) model fit into a Bayesian inferential framework to estimate the dog population size, which was found to be 78, 259, and 413 in the three study sites. The difference of the CR model estimates compared to previously available dog census count (110 and 289) can be explained by the fact that the study population addressed by the different methods differs. The human: dog ratio covered the same study population as the dog census and tended to underestimate the FRDD population size (97 and 161). Under the conditions within this study, the total number of dogs identified on the UAV pictures was 11, 96, and 71 for the three regions (compared to the total number of dogs counted during the foot-patrol transects of 112, 354 and 211). In addition, the quality of the UAV pictures was not sufficient to assess the presence of a mark on the spotted dogs. Therefore, no CR model could be implemented to estimate the size of the FRDD using UAV. We discussed ways for improving the use of UAV for this purpose, such as flying at a lower altitude in study area wisely chosen. We also suggest to investigate the possibility of using infrared camera and automatic detection of the dogs to increase visibility of the dogs in the pictures and limit workload of finding them. Finally, we discuss the need of using models, such as spatial capture-recapture models to obtain reliable estimates of the FRDD population.     Genome-wide association study to identify potential genetic modifiers in a canine model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) causes progressive muscle degeneration, cardiomyopathy and respiratory failure in approximately 1/5,000 boys. Golden Retriever muscular dystrophy (GRMD) resembles DMD both clinically and pathologically. Like DMD, GRMD exhibits remarkable phenotypic variation among affected dogs, suggesting the influence of modifiers. Understanding the role(s) of genetic modifiers of GRMD may identify genes and pathways that also modify phenotypes in DMD and reveal novel therapies. Therefore, our objective in this study was to identify genetic modifiers that affect discrete GRMD phenotypes. RESULTS: We performed a linear mixed-model (LMM) analysis using 16 variably-affected dogs from our GRMD colony (8 dystrophic, 8 non-dystrophic). All of these dogs were either full or half-siblings, and phenotyped for 19 objective, quantitative biomarkers at ages 6 and 12 months. Each biomarker was individually assessed. Gene expression profiles of 59 possible candidate genes were generated for two muscle types: the cranial tibialis and medial head of the gastrocnemius. SNPs significantly associated with GRMD biomarkers were identified on multiple chromosomes (including the X chromosome). Gene expression levels for candidate genes located near these SNPs correlated with biomarker values, suggesting possible roles as GRMD modifiers. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study enhance our understanding of GRMD pathology and represent a first step toward the characterization of GRMD modifiers that may be relevant to DMD pathology. Such modifiers are likely to be useful for DMD treatment development based on their relationships to GRMD phenotypes.
