Traditional grid-based numerical methods, such as finite volume method (FVM), are not suitable to simulate multiphase biofluids (such as blood) at the microscale level. Alternatively, meshfree Lagrangian methods can deal with two or more finely dispersed phases moving relatively to each other. The Moving Particle Semi-Implicit Method (MPS), used in this study, is a deterministic particle method based on a Lagrangian technique to simulate incompressible flows. The advantages of particle methods over traditional grid-based numerical methods have motivated several researchers to implement them into a wide range of studies in computational biomicrofluidics. The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy of the MPS method by comparing it with numerical simulations performed by an FVM. Hence, simulations of a Newtonian fluid flowing through a constriction were performed for both methods. For the MPS, a section of the channel of 3011.511.5 m was simulated using periodic boundary conditions. The obtained results have provided indications that, if the initial particle distance is sufficiently small, the MPS method can calculate accurately velocity profiles in the proposed channel. The authors acknowledge the financial support provided by PTDC/SAU-ENB/116929/2010 and EXPL/EMSSIS/2215/2013 from FCT (Science and Technology Foundation), COMPETE, QREN and European Union (FEDER). Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular due to their low emissions, energy efficiency, and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. One of the most critical components in an EV is the energy storage and management system, which requires compactness, lightweight, high efficiency, and superior build quality. Active cell equalization circuits such as those used in battery management systems (BMS) have been developed to balance the voltage and state of charge (SoC) of individual cells, ensuring the safety and reliability of the energy storage system. The use of these types of equalization circuits offers several benefits including improved battery performance, extended battery life, and enhanced safety, which are essential for the successful adoption of EVs. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the research works related to active cell equalization circuits. This review highlights the important aspects, advantages and disadvantages, and specifications. This work was supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, within the R&D Units Project Scope UIDB/00319/2020. Worldwide there is an enormous dependence on fossil fuels to produce electricity. Burning fossil fuels results in CO2 emission into the atmosphere, causing a negative environmental impact. In order to mitigate these problems, there is a need to integrate renewable energy sources into the power grid, namely solar photovoltaic (PV) energy. Power electronics converter solutions for solar PV module interface are vast and have advantages and disadvantages depending on the purpose. In addition, when the purpose is efficiency, it is important to consider the choice of the most appropriate power semiconductors. This paper presents a study, sizing, and development of a DC-DC power converter for high-power solar PV applications. In this study, a DC-DC boost interleaved power converter with two arms controlled by an incremental conductance Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control algorithm is proposed. The MPPT is combined with a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller for individual control of the current on each arm and was applied to extract the maximum power available at the solar PV module for different solar radiation and temperature conditions. The digital control system was implemented in a TMS320F28335 microcontroller from Texas Instruments. This work has been supported by FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020.

54/2017). Publisher Copyright: © 2022 by the authors. The improvement of laboratory diagnosis is a critical step for the reduction of syphilis cases around the world. In this paper, we present the development of an impedance-based method for detecting T. pallidum antigens and antibodies as an auxiliary tool for syphilis laboratory diagnosis. We evaluate the voltammetric signal obtained after incubation in carbon or gold nanoparticle-modified carbon electrodes in the presence or absence of Poly-L-Lysine. Our results indicate that the signal obtained from the electrodes was sufficient to distinguish between infected and non-infected samples immediately (T0′) or 15 min (T15′) after incubation, indicating its potential use as a point-of-care method as a screening strategy.publishersversionpublishe

Estudo de seguimento por dois anos de idosos residentes em São Paulo, Brasil: metodologia e resultados preliminares

INTRODUCTION: Previous cross-sectional studies have shown a high prevalence of chronic disease and disability among the elderly. Given Brazil s rapid aging process and the obvious consequences of the growing number of old people with chronic diseases and associated disabilities for the provision of health services, a need was felt for a study that would overcome the limitations of cross-sectional data and shed some light on the main factors determining whether a person will live longer and free of disabling diseases, the so-called successful aging. The methodology of the first follow-up study of elderly residents in Brazil is presented. METHOD: The profile of the initial cohort is compared with previous cross-sectional data and an in-depth analysis of nonresponse is carried out in order to assess the validity of future longitudinal analysis. The EPIDOSO ( Epidemiologia do Idoso ) Study conducted a two-year follow-up of 1,667 elderly people (65+), living in S. Paulo. The study consisted of two waves, each consisting of household, clinical, and biochemical surveys. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: In general, the initial cohort showed a similar profile to previous cross-sectional samples in S. Paulo. There was a majority of women, mostly widows, living in multigenerational households, and a high prevalence of chronic illnesses, psychiatric disturbances, and physical disabilities. Despite all the difficulties inherent in follow-up studies, there was a fairly low rate of nonresponse to the household survey after two years, which did not actually affect the representation of the cohort at the final household assessment, making unbiased longitudinal analysis possible. Concerning the clinical and blood sampling surveys, the respondents tended to be younger and less disabled than the nonrespondents, limiting the use of the clinical and laboratory data to longitudinal analysis aimed at a healthier cohort. It is worth mentioning that gender, education, family support, and socioeconomic status were not important determinants of nonresponse, as is often the case.INTRODUÇÃO: Estudos transversais recentes mostraram alta prevalência de doenças crônicas e incapacidades físicas entre idosos.

Nanostructured 3D Constructs Based on Chitosan and Chondroitin Sulphate Multilayers for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Nanostructured three-dimensional constructs combining layer-by-layer technology (LbL) and template leaching were processed and evaluated as possible support structures for cartilage tissue engineering. Multilayered constructs were formed by depositing the polyelectrolytes chitosan (CHT) and chondroitin sulphate (CS) on either bidimensional glass surfaces or 3D packet of paraffin spheres. 2D CHT/CS multi-layered constructs proved to support the attachment and proliferation of bovine chondrocytes (BCH). The technology was transposed to 3D level and CHT/CS multi-layered hierarchical scaffolds were retrieved after paraffin leaching. The obtained nanostructured 3D constructs had a high porosity and water uptake capacity of about 300%. Dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA) showed the viscoelastic nature of the scaffolds. Cellular tests were performed with the culture of BCH and multipotent bone marrow derived stromal cells (hMSCs) up to 21 days in chondrogenic differentiation media. Together with scanning electronic microscopy analysis, viability tests and DNA quantification, our results clearly showed that cells attached, proliferated and were metabolically active over the entire scaffold. Cartilaginous extracellular matrix (ECM) formation was further assessed and results showed that GAG secretion occurred indicating the maintenance of the chondrogenic phenotype and the chondrogenic differentiation of hMSCs
