    First records of Tarentola mauritanica (Linnaeus, 1758) (Reptilia; Gekkonidae) in the Azores

    The Moorish gecko Tarentola mauritanica (Linnaeus, 1758) is a widespread species native to the Mediterranean region from southern France to Greece and northern Africa (Loveridge 1947; Martínez-Rica 1997; Hódar 2002; Perera et al. 2008, 2010; Plezeguelos et al. 2008). It has recently been reported as living and breeding in California (Marhdt 1998) and also as an introduced species in Madeira (Báez & Biscoito 1993). Tarentola mauritanica is paraphyletic with respect to T. angustimentalis Steindachner, 1891, a Canary Islands endemic (Harris et al. 2004a). Here we report new occurrences of the Moorish gecko on Terceira Island, Azores archipelago, and 3 other occurrences on the islands of São Miguel and Faial. The possibility of an already established breeding population is discussed

    The Yellow-­crowned Night Heron Nyctanassa violacea (Aves: Pelecaniformes: Ardeidae) in the Azores and Madeira Archipelagos: a new species for the Western Palearctic

    This paper presents and describes the first confirmed occurrence of the Yellow-crowned Night Heron Nyctanassa violacea in the Azores, which also represents the first record for Europe and the Western Palearctic. We also present and discuss subsequent reports of the species in Macaronesia. Several hypotheses may help to explain the occurrence of this species in this part of the Atlantic, including disorientation caused by strong winds and increasing observation pressure. However, further studies are necessary to assess the part played by the different factors in the occurrence of new vagrant individuals/species in Macaronesia

Por outro lado, só é possível conservar os processos ecológicos associados aos artrópodes promovendo a gestão correcta dos seus habitats. Para tal, é necessária uma correcta identificação e caracterização das suas comunidades de forma a promover a sua boa gestão.     Process enhancement at near neutral pH of a homogeneous photo-Fenton reaction using ferricarboxylate complexes: Application to oxytetracycline degradation

    This work demonstrates the application at near neutral pH of a photo-Fenton reaction mediated by ferricarboxylates on the treatment of aqueous solutions containing the antibiotic Oxytetracycline (OTC) under solar irradiation. The formation of a Fe:OTC complex after Fe2+ oxidation to Fe3+, in the presence of H2O2, showed the inconvenience of using the conventional Fe2+/H2O2/UV-Vis process at near neutral pH levels, as the complex is retained in the filter. To overcome this, a Fe3+/Oxalate/UV-Vis or Fe3+/Citrate/H2O2/UV-Vis process was proposed. The higher tendency of Fe3+ to form complexes with carboxylates avoids the formation of Fe:OTC complexes and allows for proper OTC detection along reaction times. The photo-Fenton process itself is improved by the extension of the iron solubility to higher and more practical pH values, by the increase of the quantum yield of Fe2+ production and by presenting stronger radiation absorption at wavelengths up to 580 nm. In this way, process efficiency was evaluated for different variables such as Fe3+ concentration, pH, temperature and irradiance, using a compound parabolic collector (CPC) photoreactor at lab-scale under simulated solar radiation.     Intracellular nucleic acid delivery by the supercharged dengue virus capsid protein

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.Supercharged proteins are a recently identified class of proteins that have the ability to efficiently deliver functional macromolecules into mammalian cells. They were first developed as bioengineering products, but were later found in the human proteome. In this work, we show that this class of proteins with unusually high net positive charge is frequently found among viral structural proteins, more specifically among capsid proteins. In particular, the capsid proteins of viruses from the Flaviviridae family have all a very high net charge to molecular weight ratio (> +1.07/kDa), thus qualifying as supercharged proteins. This ubiquity raises the hypothesis that supercharged viral capsid proteins may have biological roles that arise from an intrinsic ability to penetrate cells. Dengue virus capsid protein was selected for a detailed experimental analysis. We showed that this protein is able to deliver functional nucleic acids into mammalian cells. The same result was obtained with two isolated domains of this protein, one of them being able to translocate lipid bilayers independently of endocytic routes. Nucleic acids such as siRNA and plasmids were delivered fully functional into cells.     Plant aqueous extracts: antioxidant capacity via haemolysis and bacteriophage P22 protection

    The bacteriophage P22/Salmonella Typhimurium system, as well as human erythrocytes have been used to assay for protection, against forced oxidation caused by hydrogen peroxide, brought about by several aqueous extracts of selected adventitious plants grown in Portugal. This study proved, for the first time, that the aforementioned bacteriophage-based system is a suitable method to assess the antioxidant activity of plant extracts; among the 12 plants tested, raspberry (Rubus idaeus), sage (Salvia sp.), savory (Satureja montana) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) were found to effectively protect against oxidative damage caused by H2O2. Haemolysis was inhibited via pre-treatment with every plant extract tested, except heath at 0.1% (w/v). The two analytical methods produced different results – and for some plants, there was a dependence (either direct or inverse) of the quantitative protection effect on extract concentration, whereas for others no significant dependence was found at all. Savory yielded the most promising results, using either method. Therefore, the P22/Salmonella system can be used as a suitable in vivo assay, and human erythrocytes as a suitable in vitro assay to confirm (or not) the antioxidant capacity of plant extracts in biological matrices.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
