    Factor analysis of self-treatment in diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Self-treatment is a treatment of oneself without professional help, which may cause health-related consequences. This investigation examined the self-treatment behaviors in patients with diabetes mellitus in Iran/kashan.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The patients who referred to the clinic of diabetes and those who were admitted to the General hospital in the city of Kashan due to diabetes mellitus were asked to participate in this cross-sectional study. For data collection, The 25 item questionnaire of Likert scale type with four scales was used. Factor analysis was performed to define the patterns of self-treatment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>398 patients participated in the study. The mean age of the study population was 54.9 ± 12.9 years. The majority (97%) had type 2 diabetes. 50% of patients reported self- treatment. The self-treatment score was 45.8 ± 8.8 (25-100). Female gender, lower education and co-morbid illnesses of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and cardiac disease had significant relationship with self-treatment. The factor analysis procedure revealed seven factors that explained the 43% of variation in the self-treatment. These seven factors were categorized as knowledge, deficiencies of formal treatments, available self-treatment methods, physician related factors, the tendency to use herbal remedies, underlying factors such as gender and factors related to diabetes.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>There is a medium tendency for self-treatment in diabetic patients. The assessment of self-treatment practices must be an essential part of patients' management in diabetes care.</p

    Motivations and reasons for women attending a Breast Self-Examination training program: A qualitative study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Breast cancer is a major threat to Taiwanese women's health. Despite the controversy surrounding the effectiveness of breast self-examination (BSE) in reducing mortality, BSE is still advocated by some health departments. The aim of the study is to provide information about how women decide to practice BSE and their experiences through the training process. Sixty-six women aged 27-50 were recruited.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A descriptive study was conducted using small group and individual in-depth interviews to collect data, and using thematic analysis and constant comparison techniques for data analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>It was found that a sense of self-security became an important motivator for entering BSE training. The satisfaction in obtaining a sense of self-security emerged as the central theme. Furthermore, a ladder motivation model was developed to explain the participants' motivations for entering BSE training. The patterns of motivation include opportunity taking, clarifying confusion, maintaining health, and illness monitoring, which were connected with the risk perception for breast cancer.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We recognize that the way women decide to attend BSE training is influenced by personal and social factors. Understanding the different risk assessments women rely on in making their health decisions is essential. This study will assist researchers and health professionals to gain a better understanding of alternative ways to deal with breast health, and not to be limited by the recommendations of the health authorities.</p

    A Cross-Generational Study of Contraception and Reproductive Health Among Sudanese and Eritrean Women in Brisbane, Australia

    This study conducted in Brisbane, Australia, was undertaken with a cross-section of Sudanese and Eritrean mothers and daughters. We explored and documented the women’s intergenerational experiences and knowledge of reproductive health and contraception. Underpinned by a qualitative approach, focus group discussions were undertaken along with key informant interviews with health and multicultural sector professionals. Through examination of knowledge shared, the analysis distilled key aspects of intergenerational fears, cultural safety, and health. Participants proposed recommendations on how refugee and migrant women in Australia and resettled countries globally can more effectively and holistically exercise their sexual and reproductive health rights

    Cigarette sales to women and children in urban Thailand

    This descriptive study aimed to document cigarette retailers' knowledge and behaviors about the minimum legal age of cigarette buyers, and their estimates of the proportion of children and women among cigarette buyers. The study was conducted among 70 shop attendants in Hat Yai and Chon Buri cities. A semi-structured interview method was used to collect data using open-ended and close-ended questions. Qualitative data gained from observation and in-depth interviews among six shop owners provided information to support data collected from semi-structured interviews. Cigarettes are sold in small family-run food and household item shops. Although cigarette sales provide limited profits, they were described as essential to attract customers. Twenty-four percent sold only Thai cigarettes, 4% sold only imported cigarettes and 72% sold both. Almost one-third said they did not know the minimum legal age and more than half sold cigarettes to persons younger than 18 years. Single Thai cigarettes were sold to poor customers and to children. A small proportion (13%) said that 50% of their cigarette customers were women. It is possible that women and children were buying for adult males. Although cigarette sales to children younger than 18 years have been prohibited in Thailand for almost ten years, this information was only acknowledged by a small proportion of the shopkeepers. More research is needed on smoking prevalence and the reasons for initiating of smoking in women and children

    Use of formal and informal methods to gain information among faculty at an Australian regional university

    Faculty members use formal methods, searching traditional print sources along with the newer electronic resources of gaining information for various purposes including research and teaching activities. A number of studies have shown that faculty also use informal methods of information gathering, such as personal contact and personal communications, more frequently because of the ease of using such sources and because the resulting information meets their needs.( n1, n2) The informal method of information gathering has helped faculty in the same field to compare and share information.( n3-n7) Many studies focused on the use of personal contact and personal communications among faculty for their research activities including conducting their own research projects and having their research articles published. In the past two decades, electronic sources of information have been increasingly widely available. These sources include online databases, online public access catalogs (OPACs), e-conference, e-mail discussion, full-text databases, books, scholarly Web sites and pre-print archives and bulletin boards. The advancements in technology continue to facilitate this formal information gathering method through the availability of electronic resources. Little research publication was available relating to the use of these ranges of resources by faculty and its frequency for teaching and research activities. Little emphasis has been placed on the use of electronic sources of information among faculty of regional universities. This study compared the use of formal and informal methods of information gathering by faculty for teaching and research activities. The study explored the use of electronic sources by the faculty of an Australian regional university and the frequency of their use of these electronic sources. The study also aimed to assess characteristics of the faculty who used informal methods of information gathering and determine if there are relationships between the faculty\u27s characteristics and their use of the informal method to gain information. Demographic data, ongoing research activities, and competence to use electronic sources of information were used to form these characteristic profiles

    Does information support and other types of support increase women's confidence in their roles as mother?

    Undertaking maternal roles is a learnt behaviour. This study explored whether types of support had any positive effects on women’s confidence in undertaking their roles. Results showed that the support including information did not have any positive effects. Learning the roles may be influenced by various factors beyond giving information
