The Development Phase project, named the Illinois Basin Decatur Project (IBDP) involves the injection of 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into a deep saline formation of the Illinois Basin over a three-year period. We find that using less tangible forms of money increases the amount of money gambled, the propensity of selecting riskier gambles, and leads individuals to underestimate the amount gambled and overestimate their earnings

    A snow and glacier hydrological model for large catchments – case study for the Naryn River, central Asia

    In this paper we implement a degree day snowmelt and glacier melt model in the Dynamic fluxEs and ConnectIvity for Predictions of HydRology (DECIPHeR) model. The purpose is to develop a hydrological model that can be applied to large glaciated and snow-fed catchments yet is computationally efficient enough to include model uncertainty in streamflow predictions. The model is evaluated by simulating monthly discharge at six gauging stations in the Naryn River catchment (57 833 km2) in central Asia over the period 1951 to a variable end date between 1980 and 1995 depending on the availability of discharge observations. The spatial distribution of simulated snow cover is validated against MODIS weekly snow extent for the years 2001–2007. Discharge is calibrated by selecting parameter sets using Latin hypercube sampling and assessing the model performance using six evaluation metrics. The model shows good performance in simulating monthly discharge for the calibration period (NSE is 0.74&lt;NSE&lt;0.87) and validation period (0.7&lt;NSE&lt;0.9), where the range of NSE values represents the 5th–95th percentile prediction limits across the gauging stations. The exception is the Uch-Kurgan station, which exhibits a reduction in model performance during the validation period attributed to commissioning of the Toktogul reservoir in 1975 which impacted the observations. The model reproduces the spatial extent in seasonal snow cover well when evaluated against MODIS snow extent; 86 % of the snow extent is captured (mean 2001–2007) for the median ensemble member of the best 0.5 % calibration simulations. We establish the present-day contributions of glacier melt, snowmelt and rainfall to the total annual runoff and the timing of when these components dominate river flow. The model predicts well the observed increase in discharge during the spring (April–May) associated with the onset of snow melting and peak discharge during the summer (June, July and August) associated with glacier melting. Snow melting is the largest component of the annual runoff (89 %), followed by the rainfall (9 %) and the glacier melt component (2 %), where the values refer to the 50th percentile estimates at the catchment outlet gauging station Uch-Kurgan. In August, glacier melting can contribute up to 66 % of the total runoff at the highly glacierized Naryn headwater sub-catchment. The glaciated area predicted by the best 0.5 % calibration simulations overlaps the Landsat observations for the late 1990s and mid-2000s. Despite good predictions for discharge, the model produces a large range of estimates for the glaciated area (680–1196 km2) (5th–95th percentile limits) at the end of the simulation period. To constrain these estimates further, additional observations such as glacier mass balance, snow depth or snow extent should be used directly to constrain model simulations.</p

    Do people who consciously attend to their movements have more self-reported knee pain? An exploratory cross-sectional study

    Objectives: This study explored the relationship between propensity for conscious control of movement (assessed by the Movement-Specific Reinvestment Scale) and self-reported knee pain. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: General population. Subjects: Adults aged 18 to 55 years of age. Measures: Participants completed the movement-specific reinvestment scale and a self-report questionnaire on knee pain at the same time on one occasion. Results: Data was collected on 101 adults of whom 34 (33.7%) self-reported knee pain. Mean scores on the conscious motor processing subscale of the movement-specific reinvestment scale, but not the movement self-consciousness subscale, were significantly higher for participants who reported knee pain within the previous year compared with those who did not (mean difference 3.03; t-test 2.66, df = 97, P = 0.009; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.77 to 5.30). The association between self-reported knee pain and propensity for conscious motor processing was still observed, even after controlling for movement self-consciousness subscale scores, age, gender and body mass index (adjusted odds ratio 1.16, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.30)

    Remanufacture of hot forging tools and dies using Laser Metal Deposition with powder and a hard-facing alloy Stellite 21®

    Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) processes are attracting interest in the forging industry due to their potential suitability for remanufacturing and repair of tools and dies. The ALM process known as Laser Metal Deposition with powder (LMD-p) can be used to provide a hard-facing alloy repair to hot forging tools. This is particularly important on complex tool geometries due their superior wear resistance. The Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) has established a low cost standard test method to evaluate abrasive and adhesive wear on hot forging H13 tool steel dies on an industrial scale 160kJ Schuler screw press. The bespoke tool design allows researchers to benchmark new and novel coatings, lubricants and additive layers against a known standard. Furthermore, AFRC metrology standard methods ensure repeatability and reproducibility of benchmark results. To evaluate the performance of LMD-p for remanufacturing of hot forging tools and dies, a cobalt based alloy (Stellite 21®) was selected. Stellite 21® is widely used as a hard-facing alloy as it provides excellent machinability coupled with superior wear characteristics. AFRC standard dies were coated with LMD-p Stellite 21®. The LMD-p coating was then machined to final geometry and then subjected to hot forging under AFRC standard conditions to compare to benchmark wear characteristics. Adhesive and abrasive wear was evaluated. It was shown that the Stellite 21® LMD-p additive layer performed better in both adhesive and abrasive conditions than standard H13 tools steel dies

    Given the considerable ongoing research interest in collaborative multidisciplinary modelling and co-simulation, it is worth considering the features of model-based techniques and tools that deliver benefits to cyber-physical systems developers. The European project “Integrated Tool Chain for Model-based Design of Cyber-Physical Systems” (INTO-CPS) has developed a well-founded tool chain for CPS design, based on the Functional Mock-up Interface standard, and supported by methodological guidance. The focus of the project has been on the delivery of a sound foundation, an open chain of compatible and usable tools, and a set of accessible guidelines that help users adapt the technology to their development needs

    Mapping Shallow Coastal Ecosystems: A Case Study of a Rhode Island Lagoon

    In order to effectively study, manage, conserve, and sustain shallow-subtidal ecosystems, a spatial inventory of the basic resources and habitats is essential. Because of the complexities of shallow-subtidal substrates, benthic communities, geology, geomorphology, and water column attributes, few standard protocols are fully articulated and tested that describe the mapping and inventory processes and accompanying interpretations. In this paper, we describe a systematic approach to map Rhode Island’s shallow-subtidal coastal lagoon ecosystems, by using, integrating, and reconciling multiple data sets to identify the geology, soils, biological communities, and environments that, collectively, define each shallow-subtidal habitat. We constructed maps for these lagoons via a deliberate, step by step approach. Acoustics and geostatistical modeling were used to create a bathymetric map. These data were analyzed to identify submerged landforms and geologic boundaries. Geologic interpretations were verified with video and grab samples. Soils were sampled, characterized, and mapped within the context of the landscape and geologic boundaries. Biological components and distributions were investigated using acoustics, grab samples, video, and sediment profile images. Data sets were cross-referenced and ground-truthed to test for inconsistencies. Maps and geospatial data, with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC)-compliant metadata, were finalized after reconciling data set inconsistencies and made available on the Internet. These data allow for classification in the revised Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS). With these maps, we explored potential relationships among and between physical and biological parameters. In some cases, we discovered a clear match between habitat measures; in others, however, relationships were more difficult to distinguish and require further investigation
