    Get PDF

The Ethics of Facing Western Notions in Graham Greene’s A Burnt-Out Case

Taking as a basis Søren Kierkegaard’s narrative strategy of attack and defence, this paper will analyse the representation of western civilization in connection with the worldview of the native people living in a leper colony in Belgian Congo in Graham Greene’s novel A Burnt-Out Case. I will examine concretely the way in which Greene attacks in the novel the hegemonic structure of the European colonizers, which both ignores and imposes itself on the African native society, considering it a no-structure. Additionally, I will study the cases of the priests in the leper colony and of doctor Colin, characters that, being on the frontier between both value systems, become cultural translators and thus make communication possible. These characters acknowledge that the native way of life is as legitimate as the European and represent the possibility of an empathic side of western civilization. In contrast with the attack mentioned above, with the priests and Dr Colin Greene defends the European community living in the area. Through the use of the narrative strategy of attack and defence, therefore, contradictory messages are inserted in the text so that the readers take an active role solving the paradoxes they find in their reading. Finally, I will focus on the main protagonist, Querry, whose internal journey starts with his contact with Deo Gratias, a member of the native society, and whose spiritual evolution throughout the novel cannot be explained without his experience with the native culture

Màster d'Enginyeria Ambiental, Facultat de Química, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2016-2017, Tutor: Jaime Gimenez FarrerasCCSS is a public entity in charge of providing health and social security services for all the people of Costa Rica (anyone). A hospital, that is planned to be developed in the future, is located close to an industrial and residential zone, where there are companies that manage hazardous chemical substances. This situation represents a risk for hospital users and general habitants in case of industrial accidents like toxic gaseous emissions to the atmosphere, fires and blasts. As part of a preliminary investigation and academic exercise, three sites that store this type of chemical compounds near the hospital’s property were defined and designated as Sites A, B and C. At Site A, ammonium hydroxide is stored in 30% (w/w) solution; at Site B, nitric acid is preserved in solution at 70% (w/w) and Site C contains liquefied highly flammable dimethylamine within a pressurized tank. Therefore, considering flammability and storage conditions with the objective of analyzing eventual consequences, seven scenarios of accidents were planned to study and simulate. For this analysis, ALOHA software was applied, using meteorological data from Costa Rica and comparing the results with the corresponding Spanish legislation (“Real Decreto 1196/2003”), due to the lack of this kind of Costa Rican regulations

‘Civilizing’ Africa: Livingstone’s Inheritance in A Burnt-Out Case, by Graham Greene and El sueño del celta, by Mario Vargas Llosa

In this article the concept of „semiosphere‟, developed by the Russian-Estonian scholar Juri Lotman, is used to examine the relationship between the African and the European communities in the Congo portrayed by Graham Greene in A Burnt-Out Case and by Mario Vargas Llosa in El sueño del celta. With this analysis I will prove that even though both authors denounce the terrible consequences of the European colonization had for the African people, the native communities in the novels are still depicted from a western paternalistic perspective

Ca-looping for postcombustion CO2 capture: A comparative analysis on the performances of dolomite and limestone

The low cost and wide availability of natural limestone (CaCO3) is at the basis of the industrial competitiveness of the Ca-looping (CaL) technology for postcombustion CO2 capture as already demonstrated by ~1Mwt scale pilot projects. A major focus of studies oriented towards further improving the efficiency of the CaL technology is how to prevent the gradual loss of capture capacity of limestone derived CaO as the number of carbonation/calcination cycles is increased. Natural dolomite (MgCa(CO3)2) has been proposed as an alternative sorbent precursor to limestone. Yet, carbonation of MgO is not thermodynamically favorable at CaL conditions, which may hinder the capture performance of dolomite. In the work described in this paper we carried out a thermogravimetric analysis on the multicyclic capture performance of natural dolomite under realistic regeneration conditions necessarily implying high calcination temperature, high CO2 concentration and fast transitions between the carbonation and calcination stages. Our study demonstrates that the sorbent derived from dolomite has a greater capture capacity as compared to limestone. SEM analysis shows that MgO grains in the decomposed dolomite are resistant to sintering under severe calcination conditions and segregate from CaO acting as a thermally stable support which mitigates the multicyclic loss of CaO conversion. Moreover, full decomposition of dolomite is achieved at significantly lower calcination temperatures as compared to limestone, which would help improving further the industrial competitiveness of the technology.

The purpose of this article is to describe a didactic experience in which the levels of openness have been used as a constructivismbased teaching method to take into account the different skills that Higher-Level Vocational Chemistry Training Education students show at the chemistry laboratory. That heterogeneity is mainly due to the different ways students can enroll the course: High School Diploma with or without chemistry training, entrance examination or previous university studies
