Bloch Structures in a Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensate
A rotating Bose-Einstein condensate is shown to exhibit a Bloch band
structure without the need of periodic potential. Vortices enter the condensate
by a mechanism similar to the Bragg reflection, if the frequency of a rotating
drive or the strength of interaction is adiabatically changed. A localized
state analogous to a gap soliton in a periodic system is predicted near the
edge of the Brillouin zone.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
A lattice of double wells for manipulating pairs of cold atoms
We describe the design and implementation of a 2D optical lattice of double
wells suitable for isolating and manipulating an array of individual pairs of
atoms in an optical lattice. Atoms in the square lattice can be placed in a
double well with any of their four nearest neighbors. The properties of the
double well (the barrier height and relative energy offset of the paired sites)
can be dynamically controlled. The topology of the lattice is phase stable
against phase noise imparted by vibrational noise on mirrors. We demonstrate
the dynamic control of the lattice by showing the coherent splitting of atoms
from single wells into double wells and observing the resulting double-slit
atom diffraction pattern. This lattice can be used to test controlled neutral
atom motion among lattice sites and should allow for testing controlled

Experimental study of optimal measurements for quantum state tomography
Quantum tomography is a critically important tool to evaluate quantum
hardware, making it essential to develop optimized measurement strategies that
are both accurate and efficient. We compare a variety of strategies using
nearly pure test states. Those that are informationally complete for all states
are found to be accurate and reliable even in the presence of errors in the
measurements themselves, while those designed to be complete only for pure
states are far more efficient but highly sensitive to such errors. Our results
highlight the unavoidable tradeoffs inherent to quantum tomography.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Quantum computing with spatially delocalized qubits
We analyze the operation of quantum gates for neutral atoms with qubits that
are delocalized in space, i.e., the computational basis states are defined by
the presence of a neutral atom in the ground state of one out of two trapping
potentials. The implementation of single qubit gates as well as a controlled
phase gate between two qubits is discussed and explicit calculations are
presented for rubidium atoms in optical microtraps. Furthermore, we show how
multi-qubit highly entangled states can be created in this scheme.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Cold collisions between atoms in optical lattices
We have simulated binary collisions between atoms in optical lattices during
Sisyphus cooling. Our Monte Carlo Wave Function simulations show that the
collisions selectively accelerate mainly the hotter atoms in the thermal
ensemble, and thus affect the steady state which one would normally expect to
reach in Sisyphus cooling without collisions.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
The [Y/Mg] clock works for evolved solar metallicity stars
Previously [Y/Mg] has been proven to be an age indicator for solar twins.
Here, we investigate if this relation also holds for helium-core-burning stars
of solar metallicity. High resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)
spectroscopic data of stars in the helium-core-burning phase have been obtained
with the FIES spectrograph on the NOT 2.56m telescope and the HIRES
spectrograph on the Keck I 10 m telescope. They have been analyzed to determine
the chemical abundances of four open clusters with close to solar metallicity;
NGC 6811, NGC 6819, M67 and NGC 188. The abundances are derived from equivalent
widths of spectral lines using ATLAS9 model atmospheres with parameters
determined from the excitation and ionization balance of Fe lines. Results from
asteroseismology and binary studies were used as priors on the atmospheric
parameters, where especially the is determined to much higher
precision than what is possible with spectroscopy. It is confirmed that the
four open clusters are close to solar metallicity and they follow the [Y/Mg]
vs. age trend previously found for solar twins. The [Y/Mg] vs. age clock also
works for giant stars in the helium-core burning phase, which vastly increases
the possibilities to estimate the age of stars not only in the solar
neighborhood, but in large parts of the Galaxy, due to the brighter nature of

Development and evaluation of an intervention to improve further education students' understanding of higher education assessment criteria: three studies
Three studies about helping Further Education students prepare for study at universityThis paper reports three studies about preparing Further Education (FE) students for the transition to Higher Education (HE) by improving their understanding of HE assessment criteria. In study 1, students and tutors in both FE and HE were interviewed for a qualitative analysis of their understandings and expectations about assessment criteria. In study 2, students in FE and HE completed questionnaires measuring self-rated understanding and ability about assessment criteria, and beliefs about essay writing. Studies 1 and 2 both showed that FE students were more confident than HE students about their understanding and ability in relation to assessment criteria, but FE students’ understandings suggested more surface approaches to learning and more naïve epistemological beliefs. In study 3, a workshop intervention to improve FE students’ understandings of HE assessment criteria was evaluated in a comparative longitudinal trial. The intervention reduced FE students’ self-rated understanding and ability, and promoted more sophisticated beliefs about essay writing, by comparison with students who received standard tuition. We concluded that interventions to develop more realistic understandings of what is required in academic writing could be used to prepare FE students more effectively for the transition to HE
