Mechanisms of barrier layer formation and erosion from in situ observations in the Bay of Bengal
During the Bay of Bengal (BoB) Boundary Layer Experiment (BoBBLE) in the southern BoB, time series of microstructure measurements were obtained at 8N, 89E from 4-14 July, 2016. These observations captured events of barrier layer (BL) erosion and re-formation. Initially, a three-layer structure was observed: a fresh surface mixed layer (ML) of thickness 10-20 m; a BL below of 30-40 m thickness with similar temperature but higher salinity; a high salinity core layer, associated with Summer Monsoon Current. Each of these three layers was in relative motion to the others, leading to regions of high shear at the interfaces. However, haline stratification overcame the destabilising influence of the shear regions, and preserved the three-layer structure. A salinity budget using in situ observations suggested that during the BL erosioni, high salinity surface waters (34.5 PSU) with weak stratification were advected to the time series location and replaced the three-layer structure with a deep ML (~60 m). Weakened stratification at the time series location also allowed atmospheric wind forcing to penetrate deeper. Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate and eddy diffusivity showed elevated values above 10-7 W kg-1 and 10-4 m2 s-1, respectively, in the upper 60 m. Later, the surface salinity decreased again (33.8 PSU) through horizontal advection, stratification became stronger and elevated mixing rates were confined to the upper 20 m, and the BL reformed. A 1-D model analysis suggests that in the study region, advection of temperature-salinity characteristics is essential for the maintenance of the BL and to the extent to which mixing penetrates the water column
Stochastic Gravity: A Primer with Applications
Stochastic semiclassical gravity of the 90's is a theory naturally evolved
from semiclassical gravity of the 70's and 80's. It improves on the
semiclassical Einstein equation with source given by the expectation value of
the stress-energy tensor of quantum matter fields in curved spacetimes by
incorporating an additional source due to their fluctuations. In stochastic
semiclassical gravity the main object of interest is the noise kernel, the
vacuum expectation value of the (operator-valued) stress-energy bi-tensor, and
the centerpiece is the (stochastic) Einstein-Langevin equation. We describe
this new theory via two approaches: the axiomatic and the functional. The
axiomatic approach is useful to see the structure of the theory from the
framework of semiclassical gravity. The functional approach uses the
Feynman-Vernon influence functional and the Schwinger-Keldysh close-time-path
effective action methods which are convenient for computations. It also brings
out the open systems concepts and the statistical and stochastic contents of
the theory such as dissipation, fluctuations, noise and decoherence. We then
describe the application of stochastic gravity to the backreaction problems in
cosmology and black hole physics. Intended as a first introduction to this

The environmental impact of fertilizer embodied in a wheat-to-bread supply chain
Food production and consumption cause approximately one-third of total greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore delivering food security challenges not only the capacity of our
agricultural system, but also its environmental sustainability. Knowing where and at what level environmental impacts
occur within particular food supply chains is necessary if
farmers, agri-food industries and consumers are to share
responsibility to mitigate these impacts. Here we present
an analysis of a complete supply chain for a staple of the
global diet, a loaf of bread. We obtained primary data for all
the processes involved in the farming, production and transport
systems that lead to the manufacture of a particular brand of
800 g loaf. The data were analysed using an advanced life
cycle assessment (LCA) tool, yielding metrics of environmental
impact, including greenhouse gas emissions. We show
that more than half of the environmental impact of producing
the loaf of bread arises directly from wheat cultivation, with
the use of ammonium nitrate fertilizer alone accounting for
around 40%. These findings reveal the dependency of bread
production on the unsustainable use of fertilizer and illustrate
the detail needed if the actors in the supply chain are to
assume shared responsibility for achieving sustainable
food production
School-Based Programs to Reduce Bullying and Victimization
School bullying has serious short-term and long-term effects on children’s physical
and mental health. Various anti-bullying programs have been implemented world
wide and, more rarely, evaluated. Previous narrative reviews, summarizing the work
done on bullying prevention, as well as previous meta-analyses of anti-bullying
programs, are limited. The definition of school bullying includes several key
elements: physical, verbal, or psychological attack or intimidation that is intended
to cause fear, distress, or harm to the victim; an imbalance of power (psychological
or physical), with a more powerful child (or children) oppressing less powerful ones;
and repeated incidents between the same children over a prolonged period. School
bullying can occur in school or on the way to or from school. It is not bullying when
two persons of the same strength (physical, psychological, or verbal) victimize each
other. This report presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of
programs designed to reduce school bullying perpetration and victimization (i.e.
being bullied). The authors indicate the pitfalls of previous reviews and explain in
detail how the present systematic review and meta-analysis addresses the gaps in
the existing literature on bullying prevention
The complexities of breast cancer desmoplasia
The stromal, or 'desmoplastic', responses seen histologically in primary breast carcinomas can vary from being predominantly cellular (fibroblasts/myofibroblasts) with little collagen to being a dense acellular tissue. The mechanisms underlying the stromal response are complex; paracrine activation of myofibroblasts by growth factors is important but the contribution of cytokines/chemokines should not be ignored. A recent xenograft study has proposed that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is the initiator of the desmoplastic response, but this has not been confirmed by (limited) analyses in vivo. Further studies are required to elaborate the mechanisms of the desmoplastic response, to determine its role in breast cancer progression and whether it is the same for all carcinomas
Association of high risk human papillomavirus and breast cancer : a UK based study
Infection by human papillomaviruses (HPVs) has been implicated in the aetiology of a variety of cancers. Studies evaluating the presence of HPVs in breast cancer (BC) have generated considerable controversy. To date, most studies have focused on the presence of viral DNA in BC; however there are important gaps in evidencing the role of HPV persistence in the invasiveness of BC. While these studies have been conducted in several countries, none, on the presence and biological activity of high risk (HR) HPV in BC has been done in the UK. Hence, we aimed to investigate these gaps by screening a total of 110 fresh breast tissue specimens from UK patients for the presence of twelve HR-HPV types DNA using PCR and Sanger sequencing. Samples positive for HPV-DNA were screened for viral oncoprotein expression using western blot and dot blot. Data obtained showed the presence of HR-HPVs in 42% of breast tissues of which the viral activity was only confirmed in a number of invasive carcinomas (5/26). This finding, the first to report in the UK, suggests that the selective expression of viral oncoprotein in invasive cases may propose a role for HR-HPVs in the development of some types of BC

BoBBLE: ocean-atmosphere interaction and its impact on the South Asian monsoon
The Bay of Bengal (BoB) plays a fundamental role in controlling the weather systems that make up the South Asian summer monsoon system. In particular,the southern BoB has cooler sea surface temperature (SST) that influence ocean-atmosphere interaction and impact on the monsoon. Compared to the southeast, the southwestern BoB is cooler, more saline, receives much less rain, and is influenced by the Summer Monsoon Current(SMC). To examine the impact of these features on the monsoon, the BoB Boundary Layer Experiment (BoBBLE) was jointly undertaken by India and the UK during June–July 2016. Physical and bio-geochemical observations were made using a CTD, five ocean gliders, a uCTD, a VMP, two ADCPs, Argo floats, drifting buoys, meteorological sensors and upper air radiosonde balloons. The observations were made along a zonal section at 8◦N between 85.3◦E and 89◦E with a 10-day time series at 89◦E, 8◦N. This paper presents the new observed features of the southern BoB from the BoBBLE field program, supported by satellite data. Key results from the BoBBLE field campaign show the Sri Lanka Dome and the SMC in different stages of their seasonal evolution and two freshening events during which salinity decreased in the upper layer leading to the formation of thick barrier layers. BoBBLE observations were taken during a suppressed phase of the intraseasonal oscillation; they captured in detail the warming of the ocean mixed layer and preconditioning of the atmosphere to convection

Introduction: Globally, back pain is the leading cause of years of disability. In the United Kingdom, over 20 million people live with musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, with low back pain being one of the most common causes. National strategies promote self‐management and the use of digital technologies to empower populations. Aims: To evaluate the uptake and impact of providing the SelfSTart approach (STarT Back and SelfBACK App) when delivered by a First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP) to people presenting with low back pain in primary care. Methods: Patients presenting with a new episode of low back pain underwent routine assessment and completion of a STarT Back questionnaire. Patients with low/medium scores were offered the SelfBACK App. A control population was provided by the MIDAS‐GP study. Patient Experience, outcome measures, healthcare utilisation and retention were captured through the app and clinical systems (EMIS). Interviews with five FCPs explored the experiences of using the SelfSTart approach. Results: SelfSTarT was taken up by almost half (48%) of those to whom it was offered. Compared to MIDAS‐GP, users were more likely to be younger, male, in work, and with higher health literacy. SelfSTarT users reported significant improved experiences relating to receiving an agreed care plan and receiving sufficient information. There were no significant differences in treatments offered. FCPs were positive about the app and felt it had value but wanted feedback on patient progress. They recognised that a digital solution would not be suitable for all. Conclusion: This approach offers an opportunity to empower and support self‐management, using robustly evaluated digital technology
Schools, families, and social reproduction
Neoliberal educational discourse across the Global North is marked by an increasing homogeneity, but this masks significant socio-spatial differences in the enactment of policy. The authors focus on four facets of roll-out neoliberalism in English education policy that have expanded the function of primary schools, and redrawn the boundary between state and family responsibilities. Specifically, these are increased state support for: (1) working parenthood through provision of wraparound childcare; (2) parent-child relationships through school-led provision of parenting classes; (3) parental involvement in children’s learning; and (4) child development through schools’ fostering of extracurricular activities. The politics of policies that both enhance state responsibility for, and influence in, matters that were previously within the purview of families are complex. The collective impact of these developments has been both to reform how the work of daily and generational social reproduction is done, and to reshape the social reproduction of a classed and gendered society
