    Mayenite (Ca12Al14O33) is a highly interesting functional material not only in view of its unique crystal structure as a cage compound but also for its variety of possible applications. Its ability to incorporate foreign ions into the cage structure opens the possibility to create new types of solid electrolytes and even electrides. Therefore, the conductivity of various anion substituted mayenites was measured as a function of temperature. Due to controversial reports on the stability of mayenite under specific thermodynamic conditions (dry, wet, reducing, and high temperature), a comprehensive study on the stability was performed. Mayenite is clearly not stable under dry conditions (ppm H2O < 100) at temperatures above 1050 degrees C, and thus, the mayenite phase vanishes from the calcium aluminate phase diagram below a minimum humidity. Two decomposition reactions were observed and are described in detail. To get further insight into the mechanism of hydration of mayenite, the conductivity was measured as a function of water vapour pressure in a range of -5 <= lg[pH(2)O/bar] <= -1.6 at temperatures ranging from 1000 degrees C <= theta <= 1200 degrees C. Neue wehrhafte und repräsentative Bauwerke entstanden, Keller zur Vorratshaltung wurden in das anstehende Felsgestein getrieben. Ein bisher nicht vollständig erklärtes geologisches Phänomen der Erdgeschichte wurde dadurch geöffnet und kann heute konserviert besichtigt werden.The ruler’s new requirements involving Rochlitz Castle in the 12th century brought huge development work with them. New fortifying and representative structures were built and cellars for storing supplies excavated out of the solid rock.     PROUD: Effects of preoperative long-term immunonutrition in patients listed for liver transplantation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Patients with end stage liver disease are characteristically malnourished which is associated with poor outcome. Formulas enriched with arginine, ω-3 fatty acids, and nucleotides, "immunonutrients", potentially improve their nutritional status. This study is designed to evaluate the clinical outcome of long-term "immunonutrition" of patients with end-stage liver disease while on the waiting list for liver transplantation.</p> <p>Methods/design</p> <p>A randomized controlled double blind multi-center clinical trial with two parallel groups comprising a total of 142 newly registered patients for primary liver transplantation has been designed to assess the safety and efficacy of the long-term administration of ORAL IMPACT<sup>®</sup>, an "immunonutrient" formula, while waiting for a graft. Patients will be enrolled the day of registration on the waiting list for liver transplantation. Study ends on the day of transplantation. Primary endpoints include improved patients' nutritional and physiological status, as measured by mid-arm muscle area, triceps skin fold thickness, grip strength, and fatigue score, as well as patients' health related quality of life. Furthermore, patients will be followed for 12 postoperative weeks to evaluate anabolic recovery after transplantation as shown by reduced post-transplant mechanical ventilation, hospital stay, wound healing, infectious morbidities (pneumonia, intraabdominal abscess, sepsis, line sepsis, wound infection, and urinary tract infection), acute and chronic rejection, and mortality.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Formulas enriched with arginine, ω-3 fatty acids, and nucleotides have been proven to be beneficial in reducing postoperative infectious complications and length of hospital stay among the patients undergoing elective gastrointestinal surgery. Possible mechanisms include downregulation of the inflammatory responses to surgery and immune modulation rather than a sole nutritional effect.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00495859</p

    The Influence of Cortisol, Flow, and Anxiety on Performance in E-Sports: A Field Study

    Background and Objectives. Most performance theories were tested under controlled laboratory settings and offer therefore only limited transferability to real-life situations. E-sport competitions offer a relatively controllable while at the same time competitive setting, and our aim was to examine different influencing factors on competitive performance. Design and Methods. Salivary cortisol was measured immediately before, after, and 30 minutes after a game of 23 computer players during e-sport tournaments. The players answered the Flow Short Scale, which consists of the two subdimensions “flow experience” and “anxiety” subsequent to their game. The performance was assessed by the result of each player’s game (win or loss). Results. Mean cortisol levels increased significantly during the game but response patterns were inconsistent. Winners and losers differed significantly in anxiety with winners showing higher anxiety levels. After dividing the sample into three groups of different cortisol response patterns, significant differences in performance and anxiety were found, with low to moderate levels of cortisol being associated with the highest performance and anxiety. Conclusions. A low to moderate physiological arousal and a simultaneously high level of anxiety represent a favorable state for achieving optimal performance during e-sports. Anxiety seems to exert a stronger influence on performance than physiological arousal

    The effects of 52 weeks of soccer or resistance training on body composition and muscle function in +65-year-old healthy males:A randomized controlled trial

    The effects of 52 weeks of soccer or resistance training were investigated in untrained elderly men. The subjects aged 68.1±2.1 yrs were randomised into a soccer (SG; n = 9), a resistance (RG; n = 9) and a control group (CG; n = 8). The subjects in SG and RG, respectively, trained 1.7±0.3 and 1.8±0.3 times weekly on average during the intervention period. Muscle function and body composition were determined before and after 16 and 52 weeks of the intervention period. In SG, BMI was reduced by 1.5% and 3.0% (p<0.05) after 16 and 52 weeks, respectively, unchanged in RG and 2% higher (p<0.05) in CG after 52 weeks of the intervention period. In SG, the response to a glucose tolerance test was 16% lower (p<0.05) after 16 wks, but not after 52 wks, compared to before the intervention period, and unchanged in RG and CG. In SG, superoxide dismutase-2 expression was 59% higher (p<0.05) after 52 wks compared to before the intervention period, and unchanged in RG and CG. In RG, upper body lean mass was 3 and 2% higher (p<0.05) after 16 and 52 wks, respectively, compared to before the intervention period, and unchanged in SG and CG. In RG, Akt-2 expression increased by 28% (p<0.01) and follistatin expression decreased by 38% (p<0.05) during the 52-wk intervention period, and was unchanged in SG and CG. Thus, long-term soccer training reduces BMI and improves anti-oxidative capacity, while long-term resistance training impacts muscle protein enzyme expression and increases lean body mass in elderly men.     Attosecond dispersive soft X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy in graphite

    Phase transitions of solids and structural transformations of molecules are canonical examples of important photo-induced processes, whose underlying mechanisms largely elude our comprehension due to our inability to correlate electronic excitation with atomic position in real time. Here, we present a decisive step towards such new methodology based on water-window-covering (284 eV to 543 eV) attosecond soft X-ray pulses that can simultaneously access electronic and lattice parameters via dispersive X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. We validate attoXAFS with an identification of the {\sigma}* and {\pi}* orbital contributions to the density of states in graphite simultaneously with its lattice's four characteristic bonding distances. This work demonstrates the concept of attoXAFS as a powerful real-time investigative tool which is equally applicable to gas-, liquid- and condensed phase
