Hubble Space Telescope Weak-lensing Study of the Galaxy Cluster XMMU J2235.3-2557 at z=1.4: A Surprisingly Massive Galaxy Cluster when the Universe is One-third of its Current Age
We present a weak-lensing analysis of the z=1.4 galaxy cluster XMMU
J2235.3-2557, based on deep Advanced Camera for Surveys images. Despite the
observational challenge set by the high redshift of the lens, we detect a
substantial lensing signal at the >~ 8 sigma level. This clear detection is
enabled in part by the high mass of the cluster, which is verified by our both
parametric and non-parametric estimation of the cluster mass. Assuming that the
cluster follows a Navarro-Frenk-White mass profile, we estimate that the
projected mass of the cluster within r=1 Mpc is (8.5+-1.7) x 10^14 solar mass,
where the error bar includes the statistical uncertainty of the shear profile,
the effect of possible interloping background structures, the scatter in
concentration parameter, and the error in our estimation of the mean redshift
of the background galaxies. The high X-ray temperature 8.6_{-1.2}^{+1.3} keV of
the cluster recently measured with Chandra is consistent with this high lensing
mass. When we adopt the 1-sigma lower limit as a mass threshold and use the
cosmological parameters favored by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe
5-year (WMAP5) result, the expected number of similarly massive clusters at z
>~ 1.4 in the 11 square degree survey is N ~ 0.005. Therefore, the discovery of
the cluster within the survey volume is a rare event with a probability < 1%,
and may open new scenarios in our current understanding of cluster formation

A Second-order bias model for the Logarithmic Halo Mass Density
We present an analytic model for the local bias of dark matter halos in a
LCDM universe. The model uses the halo mass density instead of the halo number
density and is searched for various halo mass cuts, smoothing lengths, and
redshift epoches. We find that, when the logarithmic density is used, the
second-order polynomial can fit the numerical relation between the halo mass
distribution and the underlying matter distribution extremely well. In this
model the logarithm of the dark matter density is expanded in terms of log halo
mass density to the second order. The model remains excellent for all halo mass
cuts (from M_{cut}=3\times10^{11}3\times10^{12}h^{-1}M_{\odot}R=5h^{-1}50h^{-1}$Mpc), and redshift ranges
(from z=0 to 1.0) considered in this study. The stochastic term in the relation
is found not entirely random, but a part of the term can be determined by the

Prevent and cure disuse bone loss
Anabolic agents like parathyroid hormone and postagladin E-like substances were studied in dogs and rats to determine their effectiveness in the prevention and cure of bone loss due to immobilization. It was determined that postagladin E2 administration prevented immobilization while at the same time it added extra bone in a dose responsive manner. Although bone mass returns, poor trabecular architecture remains after normal ambulation recovery from immobilization. Disuse related bone loss and poor trabecular architecture were cured by post-immobilization postagladin E2 treatment
Simultaneous dual-frequency radio observations of S5 0716+714: A search for intraday variability with the Korean VLBI Network
This study aims to search for the existence of intraday variability (IDV) of
BL Lac object S5 0716+714 at high radio frequencies for which the interstellar
scintillation effect is not significant. Using the 21-meter radio telescope of
the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), we present results of multi-epoch simultaneous
dual-frequency radio observations. Single-dish observations of S5 0716+714 were
simultaneously conducted at 21.7 GHz (K-band) and 42.4 GHz (Q-band), with a
high cadence of 30-60 minute intervals.We observed four epochs between December
2009 and June 2010. Over the whole set of observation epochs, S5 0716+714
showed significant inter-month variations in flux density at both the K- and
Q-bands, with modulation indices of approximately 19% for the K-band and
approximately 36% for the Q-band. In all epochs, no clear intraday variability
was detected at either frequency. The source shows monotonic flux density
increase in epochs 1 and 3 and monotonic flux density decrease in epochs 2 and
4. In the flux density increasing phases, the flux densities at the Q-band
increase more rapidly. In the decreasing phase, no significant flux density
difference is seen at the two frequencies. The situation could be different
close to flux density peaks that we did not witness in our observations. We
find an inverted spectrum with mean spectral indices of -0.57+-0.13 in epoch 1
and -0.15+-0.11 in epoch 3. On the other hand, we find relatively steep indices
of +0.24+-0.14 and +0.17+-0.18 in epochs 2 and 4, respectively. We conclude
that the frequency dependence of the variability and the change of the spectral
index are caused by source-intrinsic effects rather than by any extrinsic

Scaling Relations and Overabundance of Massive Clusters at z>~1 from Weak-Lensing Studies with HST
We present weak gravitational lensing analysis of 22 high-redshift (z >~1)
clusters based on Hubble Space Telescope images. Most clusters in our sample
provide significant lensing signals and are well detected in their
reconstructed two-dimensional mass maps. Combining the current results and our
previous weak-lensing studies of five other high-z clusters, we compare
gravitational lensing masses of these clusters with other observables. We
revisit the question whether the presence of the most massive clusters in our
sample is in tension with the current LambdaCDM structure formation paradigm.
We find that the lensing masses are tightly correlated with the gas
temperatures and establish, for the first time, the lensing mass-temperature
relation at z >~ 1. For the power law slope of the M-TX relation (M propto
T^{\alpha}), we obtain \alpha=1.54 +/- 0.23. This is consistent with the
theoretical self-similar prediction \alpha=3/2 and with the results previously
reported in the literature for much lower redshift samples. However, our
normalization is lower than the previous results by 20-30%, indicating that the
normalization in the M-TX relation might evolve. After correcting for Eddington
bias and updating the discovery area with a more conservative choice, we find
that the existence of the most massive clusters in our sample still provides a
tension with the current Lambda CDM model. The combined probability of finding
the four most massive clusters in this sample after marginalization over

The Hubble Constant determined through an inverse distance ladder including quasar time delays and Type Ia supernovae
Context. The precise determination of the present-day expansion rate of the
Universe, expressed through the Hubble constant , is one of the most
pressing challenges in modern cosmology. Assuming flat CDM,
inference at high redshift using cosmic-microwave-background data from Planck
disagrees at the 4.4 level with measurements based on the local
distance ladder made up of parallaxes, Cepheids and Type Ia supernovae (SNe
Ia), often referred to as "Hubble tension". Independent,
cosmological-model-insensitive ways to infer are of critical importance.
Aims. We apply an inverse-distance-ladder approach, combining strong-lensing
time-delay-distance measurements with SN Ia data. By themselves, SNe Ia are
merely good relative distance indicators, but by anchoring them to strong
gravitational lenses one can obtain an measurement that is relatively
insensitive to other cosmological parameters. Methods. A cosmological parameter
estimate is performed for different cosmological background models, both for
strong-lensing data alone and for the combined lensing + SNe Ia data sets.
Results. The cosmological-model dependence of strong-lensing measurements
is significantly mitigated through the inverse distance ladder. In combination
with SN Ia data, the inferred consistently lies around 73-74 km s
Mpc, regardless of the assumed cosmological background model. Our
results agree nicely with those from the local distance ladder, but there is a
>2 tension with Planck results, and a ~1.5 discrepancy with
results from an inverse distance ladder including Planck, Baryon Acoustic
Oscillations and SNe Ia. Future strong-lensing distance measurements will

Prostaglandin E2 Prevents Ovariectomy-Induced Cancellous Bone Loss in Rats
The object of this study was to determine whether prostaglandin E2, (PGE2) can prevent ovariectomy induced cancellous bone loss. Thirty-five 3-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups. The rats in the first group were ovariectomized (OVX) while the others received sham operation (sham-OVX). The OVX group was further divided into three treatment groups. The daily doses for the three groups were 0,1 and 6 mg PGE2/kg for 90 days. Bone histomorphometric analyses were performed on double-fluorescent-labeled undecalcified proximal tibial metaphysis (PTM). We confirmed that OVX induces massive cancellous bone loss (-80%) and a higher bone turnover (+143%). The new findings from the present study demonstrate that bone loss due to ovarian hormone deficiency can be prevented by a low-dose (1 mg) daily administration of PGE2. Furthermore, a higher-dose (6 mg) daily administration of PGE2 not only prevents bone loss but also adds extra bone to the proximal tibial metaphyses. PGE, at the 1-mg dose level significantly increased trabecular bone area, trabecular width, trabecular node density, density of node to node, ratio of node to free end, and thus significantly decreased trabecular separation from OVX controls. At this dose level, these same parameters did not differ significantly from sham-OVX controls. However, at the 6-mg dose level PGE2, there were significant increases in trabecular bone area, trabecular width, trabecular node density, density of node to node, and ratio of node to free end, while there was significant decrease in trabecular separation from both OVX and sham-operated controls. The changes in indices of trabecular bone microanatomical structure indicated that PGE2 prevented bone loss as well as the disconnection of existing trabeculae. In summary, PGE2, administration to OVX rats decreased bone turnover and increased bone formation parameters resulting in a positive bone balance that prevented bone loss (in both lower and higher doses) and added extra bone to metaphyses of OVX rats (in higher dose). These findings support the strategy of the use of bone stimulation agents in the prevention of estrogen depletion bone loss (postmenopausal osteoporosis)
Remineralization of demineralized dentin using a dual analog system.
ObjectiveImproved methods are needed to remineralize dentin caries in order to promote conservation of dentin tissue and minimize the surgical interventions that are currently required for clinical treatment. Here, we test the hypothesis that bulk substrates can be effectively mineralized via a dual analog system proposed by others, using a tripolyphosphate (TPP) "templating analog" and a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) or poly(aspartic acid) (pAsp) "sequestration analog," the latter of which generates the polymer-induced liquid-precursor (PILP) mineralization process studied in our laboratory.Material & methodsDemineralized human dentin slices were remineralized with and without pre-treatment with TPP, using either PAA or pAsp as the PILP process-directing agent. A control experiment with no polymer present was used for comparison.ResultsNo mineralization was observed in any of the PAA groups. In both the pAsp and no polymer groups, TPP inhibited mineralization on the surfaces of the specimens but promoted mineralization within the interiors. Pre-treatment with TPP enhanced overall mineralization of the pAsp group. However, when analysed via TEM, regions with little mineral were still present.ConclusionPoly(acrylic acid) was unable to remineralize demineralized dentin slices under the conditions employed, even when pre-treated with TPP.
