Understanding Environmentalism as Politics in India

    No full text
The concept of environmentalism reflects worry over the degradation of the natural world as a result of economic progress. The concept of environmentalism arose from concerns about the deterioration of human existence, a crisis in the human species' survival economy, and the potential dangers of the organic and inorganic environment. Environmentalists in the West have their roots in ecological or green movements, as well as the revolution against industrialism. The main principle of ecology was introduced by Thomas Robert Malthus, who proposed that population expands in a geometrical proportion while food supply grows in an arithmetic proportion (Ramaswamy, 2004, 428). Environmentalism is commonly connected with the birth of the green or ecological movement in the late twentieth century (Heywood, 2007, 64); nevertheless, its roots can be found in the nineteenth-century uprising against industrialism. Environmentalism emerges from social movements, which aim to influence the political process in order to save natural resources and the entire ecosystem. Because the philosophy stresses human needs and their satisfaction, environmentalism supports 'shallow ecology.' Environmentalists are concerned with the long-term viability and conservation of natural resources for human needs

X-band metamaterial absorbers based on reduced graphene oxide-silicon carbide-linear low density polyethylene composite

Graphene oxide obtained by Hummer's method is used to synthesize reduced graphene oxide (RGO) using chemical and thermal treatment method. Flexible composites of RGO-Silicon carbide (SiC)-Low density polyethylene (LLDPE) in different wt.% ratios of fillers are characterized for complex permittivity and permeability in X-band. A metamaterial design of ring shaped with four stripe structure is designed on developed substrate as well as standard FR4 substrate and simulated using EM simulator, CST Microwave Studio. Simulated results showed shifting of resonant peak frequency from C-band frequency for FR4 substrate to X-band for developed substrates signifying a role of microwave constitutive properties of the dielectric spacer. The fabricated metamaterial structure on RGO-SiC-LLDPE composite of thickness 0.7 mm shows a S11 ∼ −25 dB at 10.7 GHz with maximum absorption of 96.7%. Thus, the developed meta-material design showing a potential application in microwave applications

Validation of a Mobile Health Technology Platform (FeverTracker) for Malaria Surveillance in India: Development and Usability Study

BackgroundA surveillance system is the foundation for disease prevention and control. Malaria surveillance is crucial for tracking regional and temporal patterns in disease incidence, assisting in recorded details, timely reporting, and frequency of analysis. ObjectiveIn this study, we aim to develop an integrated surveillance graphical app called FeverTracker, which has been designed to assist the community and health care workers in digital surveillance and thereby contribute toward malaria control and elimination. MethodsFeverTracker uses a geographic information system and is linked to a web app with automated data digitization, SMS text messaging, and advisory instructions, thereby allowing immediate notification of individual cases to district and state health authorities in real time. ResultsThe use of FeverTracker for malaria surveillance is evident, given the archaic paper-based surveillance tools used currently. The use of the app in 19 tribal villages of the Dhalai district in Tripura, India, assisted in the surveillance of 1880 suspected malaria patients and confirmed malaria infection in 93.4% (114/122; Plasmodium falciparum), 4.9% (6/122; P vivax), and 1.6% (2/122; P falciparum/P vivax mixed infection) of cases. Digital tools such as FeverTracker will be critical in integrating disease surveillance, and they offer instant data digitization for downstream processing. ConclusionsThe use of this technology in health care and research will strengthen the ongoing efforts to eliminate malaria. Moreover, FeverTracker provides a modifiable template for deployment in other disease systems
