The concept of identity has become prominent in the study of Canadian education. We further the understanding of identity by examining the ways through which adults present themselves as subjects in learning processes. We recruited 134 adults who had recently read self-help books pertaining to health, careers, or relationships, and conducted qualitative interviews that focused on the motivations, goals, and learning outcomes that they attributed to their reading. We found that, during the process of being interviewed about their self-help reading experience, roughly half of our interviewees engaged in unsolicited “identity talk”—rhetorically embracing or distancing themselves from the social role of the self-help reader. Our study provides three key contributions to the scholarship of education: a nuanced ethnographic description of the complex and diverse ways in which adult learners position themselves as subjects in self-directed learning processes; an illustration of the theoretical utility and limitations of research focused on the identity work of individuals; and an exhortation to further research concerned with understanding the role of identity in processes of educational engagement/disengagement. Industrial plan is a course of configuration applied to actual items that are to be made by large scale manufacturing. It is the inventive demonstration of deciding and characterizing an item's structure and provisions, which happens ahead of the assembling or creation of the item. Conversely, fabricate comprises simply of rehashed, frequently mechanized, replication, while make based plan is a cycle or approach where the type of the item is controlled by the item's maker to a great extent simultaneous with the demonstration of its creation. Industrial Design (ID) is the skilled act of planning items, Gadgets, Articles and Administrations utilized by a great many individuals all throughout the Planet Consistently. Industrial planners ordinarily center around the actual appearance, usefulness and manufacturability of an item, however they are frequently engaged with undeniably really during an Improvement Cycle. All of this eventually stretches out to the generally enduring worth and experience an item or administration accommodates end-clients. Each item that you communicate with consistently in your home, office, everyday life setting is the aftereffect of a plan cycle. During this interaction, horde choices are made by an industrial planner (and their group) that are pointed toward working on your life through the first-rate plan

Does Performance Breed Slack? Ownership as a Contingency to the Performance Feedback and Slack Relationship

    Get PDF
Although organizational slack is a prominent construct in strategic management, it is often treated as an antecedent or enabler of other organizational outcomes, and thus our understanding of where slack comes from is underdeveloped. We draw on the behavioral theory of the firm to develop a better understanding about the antecedents of organizational slack. In so doing, we address a gap in the literature on the antecedents of slack by developing base models showing how and why performance feedback influences the three most common types of slack studied in the literature. Moreover, we contend that ownership is an important contingency that influences these relationships because different types of owners are motivated by different norms. Within a “communitarian” culture such as Japan, domestic owners generally have a multifaceted relationship with the firm and hence are motivated by norms of reciprocity and embeddedness, thereby allowing managers to adopt a stakeholder perspective. In contrast, foreign investors typically have only an arm’s-length relationship with the firm and are thus motivated by stock price, thereby putting “contractarian” pressures on managers to adopt a shareholder perspective. This domestic/foreign ownership distinction influences how resources are allocated and therefore the relationship between performance feedback and different types of slack in the firm. We further emphasize that these relationships will vary in accordance to where the slack resides: internal or external to the firm. We find general support for our hypotheses

The global burden of cancer attributable to risk factors, 2010-19 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Get PDF
Background Understanding the magnitude of cancer burden attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors is crucial for development of effective prevention and mitigation strategies. We analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 to inform cancer control planning efforts globally. Methods The GBD 2019 comparative risk assessment framework was used to estimate cancer burden attributable to behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risk factors. A total of 82 risk-outcome pairs were included on the basis of the World Cancer Research Fund criteria. Estimated cancer deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) in 2019 and change in these measures between 2010 and 2019 are presented. Findings Globally, in 2019, the risk factors included in this analysis accounted for 4.45 million (95% uncertainty interval 4.01-4.94) deaths and 105 million (95.0-116) DALYs for both sexes combined, representing 44.4% (41.3-48.4) of all cancer deaths and 42.0% (39.1-45.6) of all DALYs. There were 2.88 million (2.60-3.18) risk-attributable cancer deaths in males (50.6% [47.8-54.1] of all male cancer deaths) and 1.58 million (1.36-1.84) risk-attributable cancer deaths in females (36.3% [32.5-41.3] of all female cancer deaths). The leading risk factors at the most detailed level globally for risk-attributable cancer deaths and DALYs in 2019 for both sexes combined were smoking, followed by alcohol use and high BMI. Risk-attributable cancer burden varied by world region and Socio-demographic Index (SDI), with smoking, unsafe sex, and alcohol use being the three leading risk factors for risk-attributable cancer DALYs in low SDI locations in 2019, whereas DALYs in high SDI locations mirrored the top three global risk factor rankings. From 2010 to 2019, global risk-attributable cancer deaths increased by 20.4% (12.6-28.4) and DALYs by 16.8% (8.8-25.0), with the greatest percentage increase in metabolic risks (34.7% [27.9-42.8] and 33.3% [25.8-42.0]). Interpretation The leading risk factors contributing to global cancer burden in 2019 were behavioural, whereas metabolic risk factors saw the largest increases between 2010 and 2019. Reducing exposure to these modifiable risk factors would decrease cancer mortality and DALY rates worldwide, and policies should be tailored appropriately to local cancer risk factor burden. Expert appetite: an exploration of doing and documenting 'healthy living' online

    No full text
Bibliography: p. 138-141Healthy living blogs (HLBs) are web sites with a healthy eating focus, where (mainly) women post photos and recipes of their meals and discuss their food-related aspirations and experiences. The growing readership of these blogs reflects the current reimagination of health expertise to include new sources of authority that are steeped in specific and strategic textual and visual representations of the self and "healthy living." This research looked at sixteen popular HLBs to discover visual and rhetorical expressions of expertise, eating and self-improvement, before closely examining four widely-read blog posts to uncover how discourses of healthy eating are taken up by bloggers and readers. This study found that blogger expertise is contingent on particular visual and textual strategies, that members take up scientific and alternative discourses of eating in specific and competent ways and for particular purposes, and that there are tensions in practices of documenting and doing "healthy living.

    No full text
Introduction: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease manifested as the destruction of tooth supporting tissues, which may progress to tooth loss. The chemical antimicrobial agents are often applied locally into the periodontal pocket as adjuncts to conventional mechanical periodontal therapy, but these have various adverse effects. Root extract of Saussurea lappa has shown anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Hence, the present study was aimed to assess and compare the effect of root extract of S. lappa to chlorhexidine gluconate as subgingival irrigant as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP). Materials and Methods: Thirty chronic periodontitis patients in the age group of 25-45 years were selected for the study. Five hundred and forty periodontal pockets were treated by three different procedures: Group1: Subjects treated by SRP only, Group 2: In addition to SRP, irrigation with S. lappa extract was done and Group 3: Chlorhexidine was used as irrigant along with SRP. Periodontal clinical recordings (modified sulcular bleeding index, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and the presence of pus discharge) were done at 0, 7, 14, 28, and 42 days. Results: The periodontal parameters studied improved in all the three groups over the time period. In 4-5 mm pockets, S. lappa treated group showed significant improvement than chlorhexidine treated group. Furthermore, a dramatic decrease in periodontal pockets with pus discharge was seen in this group. Conclusion: Subgingival irrigation with S. lappa might be a promising adjunct to conventional treatment options in the management of periodontal infections

    No full text
Aims and objectives:  Peripheral cementifying fibroma (PCF) is a solitary reactive gingival growth that predominately affects young females and is usually located in the anterior maxilla. It exhibits a controversial varied nomenculature owing to a diverse histopathologic spectrum.Case description: A case of Peripheral cementifying fibroma located on the mandibular posterior gingiva of a 50 year female patient is described. The lesion was solitary, sessile, firm to hard in consistency and measured about 2 cm in its greatest diameter. Histologically, a cellular fibrous connective tissue stroma with mineralized areas consisting of bony spicules and a large number of psammomomatoid bodies (cementum like calcification) were seen. Conclusion: A definitive diagnosis of Peripheral cementifying fibroma was ascertained based on histological preponderance of psammomatoid bodies

Assessment of combination techniques in enhancing the regenerative potential of tricalcium phosphate graft in treatment of infrabony periodontal defects

    No full text
Aims: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and compare the clinical outcome of infrabony defects following reconstructive surgery with the use of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) alone; TCP and citric acid (CA) root conditioning; and TCP, CA, and oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC) membrane. Materials and Methods: Thirty-nine systemically healthy subjects with vertical infrabony defect were initially selected based on intraoral periapical radiographs and clinical examination to record probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Only 21 defects revealed two-walled configuration on surgical debridement. These defects were selected and randomly allotted to the study groups. Group 1 defects were treated with TCP, group 2 with TCP+CA, and group 3 with TCP+CA+ORC. PPD, CAL, defect depth (DD), and level of alveolar crest (AC) were evaluated at the time of initial surgery and after 6 months at surgical re-entry. These measurements were utilized to calculate PPD reduction, CAL gain, defect fill (DF), %defect fill (%DF), and crestal resorption (CR). Statistical Analysis: A paired t-test was used for assessing changes in each group. Unpaired t-test was used for intergroup comparisons. Results: All three groups showed statistically significant PPD reduction, CAL gain, DF, and %DF, but insignificant CR at the end of 6 months. On intergroup comparison, no statistically significant differences were noted between the groups for all the parameters. Conclusion: Efficacy of combination techniques using TCP+CA; TCP+CA+ORC in treatment of periodontal infrabony defects is at least equal to that of TCP alone
