    Retinal effects of resveratrol

    Get PDF
Resveratrol is a plant polyphenol that has potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. age-related macular degeneration is a degenerative condition characterized by elevated levels of oxidation triggered cell damage and a subsequent inflammatory cascade. Resveratrol prevents activation of inflammatory pathways and is also a potent scavenger of reactive oxygen species and free radicals. Experiments using the mouse model have demonstrated that resveratrol reduces angiogenesis. The evidence suggests that resveratrol would be a useful inclusion in ocular nutritional supplements

The contribution model:a school-level funding model

    Get PDF
Over a number of years, as the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)'s funding models became more transparent, Aston University was able to discover how its funding for teaching and research was calculated. This enabled calculations to be made on the funds earned by each school in the University, and Aston Business School (ABS) in turn to develop models to calculate the funds earned by its programmes and academic groups. These models were a 'load' and a 'contribution' model. The 'load' model records the weighting of activities undertaken by individual members of staff; the 'contribution' model is the means by which funds are allocated to academic units. The 'contribution' model is informed by the 'load' model in determining the volume of activity for which each academic unit is to be funded

Semilocal convergence by using recurrence relations for fifth-order method in Banach spaces

In this paper, a semilocal convergence result in Banach spaces of an efficient fifth-order method is analyzed. Recurrence relations are used in order to prove this convergence, and some a priori error bounds are found. This scheme is finally used to estimate the solution of an integral equation and so, the theoretical results are numerically checked. We use this example to show the better efficiency of the current method compared with other existing ones, including Newton's scheme. This research was supported by Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnologia MTM2011-28636-C02-{01,02}.Cordero Barbero, A.; Hernandez-Veron, MA.; Romero, N.; Torregrosa Sánchez, JR. Complex Product Architecture Analysis using an Integrated Approach

    Get PDF
yesProduct design decomposition and synthesis is a constant challenge with its continuously increasing complexity at each level of abstraction. Currently, design decomposition and synthesis analytical tasks are mostly accomplished via functional and structural methods. These methods are useful in different phases of design process for product definition and architecture but limited in a way that they tend to focus more on ‘what’ and less on ‘how’ and vice versa. This paper combines a functional representation tool known as System State Flow Diagram (a solution independent approach), a solution search tool referred as Morphology Table, and Design Structure Matrix (mainly a solution dependent tool). The proposed approach incorporates Multiple Domain Matrix (MDM) to integrate the knowledge of both solution independent and dependent analyses. The approach is illustrated with a case study of solar robot toy, followed by its limitations, future work and discussion

Management and leadership in UK universities: exploring the possibilities of change

    Get PDF
This paper considers the case for reform of management struc- tures in UK universities and offers proposals for change. The model of top-down, performance-led management that characterises many institutions is both outmoded and ill-suited to the chal- lenges of an increasingly turbulent higher education sector. Drawing on the experiences of a university that introduced a new scheme of performance management, I explore alternative approaches to leadership and management, collaborative or part- nership working designed to improve employee voice and the need to re-evaluate approaches to Human Resource Management. I conclude with a five-point model for change
