    A conceptual study of spirituality in selected writings of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze

    Several authors have noted that one of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze’s aims was to dissolve the mind–body dualism, typical of Cartesianism. However, there has been little research on the spirit–body connection, as it appears in Jaques-Dalcroze’s writings. The purpose of this document analysis is to understand how a hermeneutic phenomenological model for spirituality in music education can inform our understanding of spirituality in selected writings by Jaques-Dalcroze. In the adapted model holism, balance, aesthetic experience, and movement in time, space, and with energy emerged as core concepts. This gives us a much richer understanding of the Dalcroze approach than has hitherto been available and adds to a growing narrative about the spiritual as it pertains to Jaques-Dalcroze and the approach he initiated

    A Preliminary List of the Mycetophilidae (Diptera) Known to Occur in Iowa

    The Dipterous family Mycetophilidae is composed of small to medium sized flies, ranging from two to nine millimeters in length. These fungus-gnats are numerous both in species and in number of individuals to be found in a local habitat. Characteristics of the legs that are particularly noticeable are as follows: elongated coxae, thickened femur and, spured and setose tibia. The adult resembles a mosquito in that it has a small head, antennae with twelve to seventeen joints and a highly arched thorax. Predominating colors are yellow and black; the abdominal segments often have alternate bands of black and yellow. The males have a complex hypopygia, which is important in the identification of the species

    Multisystem Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (Hand-Schüller-Christian disease) in an adult: a case report and review of the literature

    Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare and enigmatic clonal disorder that affects mainly children. It is characterized by single or multiple granulomatous mass lesions composed of cells with the Langerhans' cell phenotype. Clinical presentation and behavior are heterogeneous and can range from a solitary lytic bone lesion (i.e., eosinophilic granuloma) with a favorable course to a fatal disseminated leukaemia-like form, with a wide spectrum of intermediate clinical presentations between these two extremes. Although LCH typically involves the bone, lesions can be found in almost all organs. We are reporting the case of a multisystem LCH in a 47-year-old patient who presented with a panhypopituitarism and diabetes insipidus, and who, 5years later, developed mandibular, mastoid and femoral lesions.     High-Temperature Corrosion Testing of Uranium Silicide Surrogates

    The corrosion resistance of cerium silicide, a surrogate of uranium silicide, is investigated to gain insight into the reaction of uranium silicide with water. As-received and proton-irradiated Ce3Si2, CeSi2, and CeSi1.x monolithic pellets are subjected to corrosion tests in water at 300°C and 9 MPa for up to 48 h. Results show that an oxide layer composed of Ce4.67 (SiO4)3O forms on the surface of all samples, and it grows thicker with extended exposure times. Irradiated samples corrode to a greater extent than their unirradiated counterparts, which is mainly a result of the existing post-irradiation cerium oxide and the presence of ion-induced defects. Most of the Ce3Si2 samples crack (as-received) or fracture (ion-irradiated) during testing, which is due to the brittleness of the samples and oxide erosion/spallation that occur during testing

    Walking with Different Insoles Changes Lower-Limb Biomechanics Globally in Patients with Medial Knee Osteoarthritis.

    Using insoles to modify walking biomechanics is of keen interest for the treatment of medial-compartment knee osteoarthritis. So far, insole interventions have focused on reducing the peak of the knee adduction moment (pKAM) and have led to inconsistent clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in other gait variables related to knee osteoarthritis when patients walk with different insoles to provide insights into the necessity to enlarge the biomechanical analyses to other variables. Walking trials were recorded for 10 patients in four insole conditions. Changes among conditions were computed for six gait variables, including the pKAM. The associations between the changes in pKAM and the changes in the other variables were also assessed individually. Walking with different insoles had noticeable effects on the six gait variables, with high heterogeneity among patients. For all variables, at least 36.67% of the changes were of medium-to-large effect size. The associations with the changes in pKAM varied among variables and patients. In conclusion, this study showed that varying the insole could globally influence ambulatory biomechanics and that limiting measurement to the pKAM could lead to an important loss of information. Beyond the consideration of additional gait variables, this study also encourages personalized interventions to address inter-patient variability

    Entrustable professional activities for residency in general internal medicine: a systematic review.

    Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) are observable tasks that are regular parts of a physician's daily clinical work. Before being permitted to accomplish these tasks independently, trainees must gain their supervisors' trust. Defining the list of EPAs that should be mastered by the end of a residency is critical to setting clear expectations about autonomous practice. To collect all the lists of EPAs defined for residencies in general internal medicine and synthesise them into a reference work useful for developing new lists of EPAs or improving existing ones. This systematic review searched five databases and relevant grey literature using keywords related to EPAs and postgraduate education, from 2005, when the first article on EPAs was published, to April 2022. Inclusion criteria were the availability of an EPAs list and a focus on general internal medicine. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted data and performed a quality assessment using QATSDD and AACODS tools. Mean values and inter-rater reliability were calculated. The review yielded 3292 records, with 16 articles meeting the inclusion criteria, mostly from North America. Synthesising their 16 lists generated 395 EPAs. The reviewers then inductively categoried those EPAs, 308 of which fell into 6 domains, 14 themes and 24 subthemes. The domains were: (1) care and management of the general adult population (n = 103 EPAs); (2) care and management of patients with specific needs (n = 67); (3) care coordination and communication (n = 52); (4) management and leadership (N = 21); (5) healthcare quality, education, and research (n = 41); and (6) miscellaneous (n = 24). The remaining 87 EPAs were disease-specific and did not fit into this categorisation. Categorising EPAs created a unique synthesis of the existing lists of EPAs for educating residents in general internal medicine. This synthesis could be used as a reference for anyone tasked with developing new lists of EPAs or improving existing ones

    Dislocation Loops in Proton Irradiated Uranium-Nitrogen-Oxygen System

    In this study, we investigated the type of dislocation loops formed in the proton-irradiated uranium-nitrogen-oxygen (U-N-O) system, which involves uranium mononitride (UN), uranium sesquinitride (α-U2N3), and uranium dioxide (UO2) phases. The dislocation loop formation is examined using specimens irradiated at 400°C and 710°C. Based on the detailed transmission-based electron microscopy characterization with i) the morphology-based on-zone and ii) the invisibility-criterion based two-beam condition imaging techniques, only a single type of dislocation loop in each phase is found: a/2⟨110⟩, a/2⟨111⟩, or a/3⟨111⟩ dislocation loops in UN, α-U2N3, and UO2 phases, respectively. Molecular statics calculations for the formation energy of perfect and faulted dislocation loops in the UN phase indicate a critical loop size of ∼6 nm, above which perfect loops are thermodynamically favorable. This could explain the absence of faulted loops in the experimental observation of the irradiated UN phase at two temperatures. This work will enhance the understanding of irradiation induced microstructural evolution for uranium mononitride as an advanced nuclear fuel for the next-generation nuclear reactors.</p

    With the purpose of obtaining data which could be useful for complementing investigations on estuarine biological oceanography, the authors carried out a survey on the distribution and volume of catch produced by fish-traps used by traditional fishermen in the lagoon region of Cananéia-Iguape (São Paulo, Brasil), mainly for catching mullet. As many as 170 fish-traps were initially spotted and mapped in the whole region, some of which are concentrated in particular areas that seem to be points of more freauent passage of mullet and other fishes, according to the experience and observations of regional fishermen. In consequence of the dam recently built on the Valo Grande - an artificial canal conich formerly linked the RibeiraRiver to the lagoon system of Cananéia-Iguape - it is expected that the sea-water circulation within the lagoon will be intensified, with a consequent increase in the salinity rates of its waters, which in turn will probably affect the ecological balance of time. The authors suggest that a continuous monitoring of the volume and composition of the commercial catch produced by the fish-traps operating in the lagoon-region could eventually offer useful data for detecting the alterations of distribution of the several different fish species that are found in the lagoon, in consequence of the foreseen changes in the salinity rates of its waters
