Intrinsic peculiarities of real material realizations of a spin-1/2 kagome lattice
Spin-1/2 magnets with kagome geometry, being for years a generic object of
theoretical investigations, have few real material realizations. Recently, a
DFT-based microscopic model for two such materials, kapellasite Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2
and haydeeite Cu3Mg(OH)6Cl2, was presented [O. Janson, J. Richter and H.
Rosner, arXiv:0806.1592]. Here, we focus on the intrinsic properties of real
spin-1/2 kagome materials having influence on the magnetic ground state and the
low-temperature excitations. We find that the values of exchange integrals are
strongly dependent on O--H distance inside the hydroxyl groups, present in most
spin-1/2 kagome compounds up to date. Besides the original kagome model,
considering only the nearest neighbour exchange, we emphasize the crucial role

Discovery of a stellar companion to the nearby solar-analogue HD 104304
Sun-like stars are promising candidates to host exoplanets and are often
included in exoplanet surveys by radial velocity (RV) and direct imaging. In
this paper we report on the detection of a stellar companion to the nearby
solar-analogue star HD 104304, which previously was considered to host a
planetary mass or brown dwarf companion. We searched for close stellar and
substellar companions around extrasolar planet host stars with high angular
resolution imaging to characterize planet formation environments. The detection
of the stellar companion was achieved by high angular resolution measurements,
using the "Lucky Imaging" technique at the ESO NTT 3.5m with the AstraLux Sur
instrument. We combined the results with VLT/NACO archive data, where the
companion could also be detected. The results were compared to precise RV
measurements of HD 104304, obtained at the Lick and Keck observatories from
2001-2010.
We confirmed common proper motion of the binary system. A spectral type of
M4V of the companion and a mass of 0.21 M_Sun was derived. Due to comparison of
the data with RV measurements of the unconfirmed planet candidate listed in the
Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia, we suggest that the discovered companion is
the origin of the RV trend and that the inclination of the orbit of
approximately 35 degrees explains the relatively small RV signal.Comment: 4 pages, 4 PNG figures, use aa.cls, accepted for publication in

The first order convergence law fails for random perfect graphs
We consider first order expressible properties of random perfect graphs. That
is, we pick a graph uniformly at random from all (labelled) perfect
graphs on vertices and consider the probability that it satisfies some
graph property that can be expressed in the first order language of graphs. We

Serum eosinophil cationic protein (S-ECP) in a population with low prevalence of atopy
AbstractThe study is a part of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey. A random sample (n=351) of 20–44-year olds and persons of the same age with asthma-like symptoms or current asthma medication according to a postal questionnaire (n=95) were studied. Interview was taken, methacholine challenge was done and ECP, total and specific IgE were measured from serum. The median S-ECP value was 8.0 μg/l in the random sample. The geometric mean of S-ECP was higher in subjects with, than without atopy (10.2. vs 8.9 μg/l, P<0.01) and in subjects with bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) than in subjects without BHR (9.9 vs 8.0 μg/l,P <0.01). The levels correlated weakly to forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) (r=0.13, P<0.01) and were not independently correlated with respiratory symptoms, asthma or FEV1 after adjusting for BHR, IgE, sensitisation and smoking. Our results indicate that the level of eosinophil activation is low in a population with a low prevalence of atopy, even when BHR is common
Critical behaviour of combinatorial search algorithms, and the unitary-propagation universality class
The probability P(alpha, N) that search algorithms for random Satisfiability
problems successfully find a solution is studied as a function of the ratio
alpha of constraints per variable and the number N of variables. P is shown to
be finite if alpha lies below an algorithm--dependent threshold alpha\_A, and
exponentially small in N above. The critical behaviour is universal for all
algorithms based on the widely-used unitary propagation rule: P[ (1 + epsilon)
alpha\_A, N] ~ exp[-N^(1/6) Phi(epsilon N^(1/3)) ]. Exponents are related to
the critical behaviour of random graphs, and the scaling function Phi is
exactly calculated through a mapping onto a diffusion-and-death problem.Comment: 7 pages; 3 figure
Hunting for CDF Multi-Muon "Ghost" Events at Collider and Fixed-Target Experiments
In 2008 the CDF collaboration discovered a large excess of events containing
two or more muons, at least one of which seemed to have been produced outside
the beam pipe. We investigate whether similar "ghost" events could (and should)
have been seen in already completed experiments. The CDF di-muon data can be
reproduced by a simple model where a relatively light X particle undergoes
four-body decay. This model predicts a large number of ghost events in Fermilab
fixed-target experiments E772, E789 and E866, applying the cuts optimized for
analyses of Drell-Yan events. A correct description of events with more than
two muons requires a more complicated model, where two X particles are produced
from a very broad resonance Y. This model can be tested in fixed-target
experiments only if the cut on the angles, or rapidities, of the muons can be
relaxed. Either way, the UA1 experiment at the CERN ppbar collider should have
observed O(100) ghost events.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
Dynamic scaling regimes of collective decision making
We investigate a social system of agents faced with a binary choice. We
assume there is a correct, or beneficial, outcome of this choice. Furthermore,
we assume agents are influenced by others in making their decision, and that
the agents can obtain information that may guide them towards making a correct
decision. The dynamic model we propose is of nonequilibrium type, converging to
a final decision. We run it on random graphs and scale-free networks. On random
graphs, we find two distinct regions in terms of the "finalizing time" -- the
time until all agents have finalized their decisions. On scale-free networks on
the other hand, there does not seem to be any such distinct scaling regions
Magnetic properties of the low-dimensional spin-1/2 magnet \alpha-Cu_2As_2O_7
In this work we study the interplay between the crystal structure and
magnetism of the pyroarsenate \alpha-Cu_2As_2O_7 by means of magnetization,
heat capacity, electron spin resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance
measurements as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations and
quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. The data reveal that the magnetic Cu-O
chains in the crystal structure represent a realization of a quasi-one
dimensional (1D) coupled alternating spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain model with
relevant pathways through non-magnetic AsO_4 tetrahedra. Owing to residual 3D
interactions antiferromagnetic long range ordering at T_N\simeq10K takes place.
Application of external magnetic field B along the magnetically easy axis
induces the transition to a spin-flop phase at B_{SF}~1.7T (2K). The
experimental data suggest that substantial quantum spin fluctuations take place
at low magnetic fields in the ordered state. DFT calculations confirm the
quasi-one-dimensional nature of the spin lattice, with the leading coupling J_1
within the structural dimers. QMC fits to the magnetic susceptibility evaluate
J_1=164K, the weaker intrachain coupling J'_1/J_1 = 0.55, and the effective
interchain coupling J_{ic1}/J_1 = 0.20.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review
High-contrast spectroscopy of SCR J1845-6357 B
Spectral characterization of sub-stellar companions is essential to
understand their composition and formation processes. However, the large
contrast ratio of the brightness of each object to that of its parent star
limits our ability to extract a clean spectrum, free from any significant
contribution from the star. During the development of the long slit
spectroscopy (LSS) mode of IRDIS, the dual-band imager and spectrograph of
SPHERE, we proposed a data analysis method to estimate and remove the
contributions of the stellar spectrum. This method has never been tested on
real data because of the lack of instrumentation capable of combining adaptive
optics (AO), coronagraphy, and LSS. Nonetheless, a similar attenuation of the
star can be obtained using a particular observing configuration. Test data were
acquired using the AO-assisted spectrograph VLT/NACO. We obtained new J- and
H-band spectra of SCR J1845-6357 B, a T6 companion to a nearby (3.85\pm0.02 pc)
M8 star. This system is a well-suited benchmark as it is relatively wide
(~1.0") with a modest contrast ratio (~4 mag), and a previously published JHK
spectrum is available for reference. We demonstrate that (1) our method is
efficient at estimating and removing the stellar contribution, (2) it allows to
properly recover the spectral shape of the companion, and (3) it is essential
to obtain an unbiased estimation of physical parameters. We also show that the
slit configuration associated with this method allows us to use long exposure
times with high throughput producing high signal-to-noise ratio data. However,
the signal of the companion gets over-subtracted, particularly in our J-band
data, compelling us to use a fake companion spectrum to estimate and compensate
for the loss of flux. Finally, we report a new astrometric measurement of the
