    Understanding Interorganizational Learning Based on Social Spaces and Learning Episodes

    Different organizational settings have been gaining ground in the world economy, resulting in a proliferation of different forms of strategic alliances that translate into a growth in the number of organizations that have started to deal with interorganizational relationships with different actors. These circumstances reinforce Crossan, Lane, White and Djurfeldt (1995) and Crossan, Mauer and White (2011) in exploring what authors refer to as the fourth, interorganizational, level of learning. These authors, amongst others, suggest that the process of interorganizational learning (IOL) warrants investigation, as its scope of analysis needs widening and deepening. Therefore, this theoretical essay is an attempt to understand IOL as a dynamic process found in interorganizational cooperative relationships that can take place in different structured and unstructured social spaces and that can generate learning episodes. According to this view, IOL is understood as part of an organizational learning continuum and is analyzed within the framework of practical rationality in an approach that is less cognitive and more social-behavioral

    The nature and prevalence of inter-organizational project ventures: Evidence from a large scale field study in the Netherlands 2006-2009

    There has recently been noted a rapid increase in research attention to projects that involve outside partners. Our knowledge of such inter-organizational projects, however, is limited. This paper reports large scale data from a repeated trend survey amongst 2000 SMEs in 2006 and 2009 that focused on inter-organizational project ventures. Our major findings indicate that the overall prevalence of inter-organizational project ventures remained significant and stable over time, even despite the economic crisis. Moreover, we find that these ventures predominantly solve repetitive rather than unique tasks and are embedded in prior relations between the partnering organizations. These findings provide empirical support for the recent claims that project management should pay more attention to inter-organizational forms of project organization, and suggest that the archetypical view of projects as being unique in every respect should be reconsidered. Both have important implications for project management, especially in the area of project-based learning

    Knowledge Sharing in a Coopetition Project Team: An Institutional Logics Perspective

    Cooperation between firms is often addressed from the perspective of relationship organizing; however, we know little about people’s working-level engagement in collective action during interfirm projects. Focusing on cooperation between rival firms (coopetition), this paper explores how knowledge can be shared among participants. We conduct a case study of a joint-project team composed of staff from rival firms. Using the principles of grounded theory, we identify four distinct modes of knowledge sharing. By interpreting these modes in terms of temporalities and influential social structures, we develop an understanding of how individual engagement promotes knowledge sharing in an inter-firm coopetitive project. The study reexamines emerging orientations (cooperation and competition) according to institutional logics (market, corporation, and community) and temporalities. It also offers insight into the management of inter-organizational projects that are viewed as temporary organizations

    Revisiting the trustworthiness-performance-governance nexus in international joint ventures

    This paper contributes to the research on international joint ventures (IJV) in the following ways: (1) by identifying different patterns of governance that partners in the post-formation period exercise and examining how contrasting patterns relate to variations in perceived partner’s trustworthiness, as well as to IJV performance; (2) by empirically testing the extent to which partners emphasize or even renegotiate and change different elements of governance; and (3) by complementing existing studies that have examined only unidirectional links among trustworthiness, performance and governance by considering possible simultaneous relationships that may exist among these variables. The findings from a survey and follow-up interviews with international joint ventures located in Taiwan reveal that levels of partners’ trustworthiness and performance satisfaction each, by itself, may lead to the deployment of different governance measures. However, it is the combinations of extreme (high or low) variants on both partners’ trustworthiness and performance satisfaction that seem to generate clearer patterns of governance. Low satisfaction and partners’ trustworthiness seem to encourage intensification of control or the deployment of more aggressive governance measures. In contrast, high performance satisfaction and partners’ trustworthiness may foster a combination of soft and routine forms of control
