    In this article we present a theoretical study for Fraunhofer diffraction of a Laguerre-Gaussian laser beam with zeroth radial mode number and azimuthal mode number l by diffractive grating with embedded fork-shaped dislocations of integer order p. Analytical expressions describing the diffracted wave field amplitude and intensity distributions in the Fourier plane are deduced and analyzed.     Reliability of the velocity achieved during the last repetition of sets to failure and its association with the velocity of the 1-repetition maximum

    Background: This study aimed to determine the reliability of the velocity achieved during the last repetition of sets to failure (Vlast) and the association of Vlast with the velocity of the 1-repetition maximum (V1RM) during the paused and touch-and-go bench press (BP) exercises performed in a Smith machine. Methods: A total of 96 healthy men participated in this study that consisted of two testing sessions. A single BP variant (paused BP or touch-and-go BP) was evaluated on each session in a randomized order. Each session consisted of an incremental loading test until reaching the 1RM, followed by two sets of repetitions to failure against a load ranging from 75% to 90% of 1RM. Results: The reliability of Vlast was unacceptable for both BP variants (CV > 18.3%, ICC < 0.60). The correlations between V1RM and Vlast were small for the paused BP (r = 0.18) and moderate for the touch-and-go BP (r = 0.37). Conclusions: Although these results suggest that Vlast could be a better indicator of the minimal velocity threshold than V1RM, the low reliability of Vlast and the similar values of Vlast for both BP variants suggest that a standard V1RM should be used to estimate the 1RM from the individualized load-velocity relationship.This research was funded by the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (DINREG 09/2019)

    IL-33/ST2 Pathway and Galectin-3 as a New Analytes in Pathogenesis and Cardiometabolic Risk Evaluation in Psychosis

    Schizophrenia and treatment of this disorder are often accompanied with metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular issues. Alterations in the serum level of innate immune mediators, such as interleukin-33 (IL-33) and its receptor IL-33R (ST2) and Galectin-3 (Gal-3) were observed in these conditions. Moreover, these parameters are potential prognostic and therapeutic markers. There is also accumulating evidence that these molecules play a role in neuroinflammation. Therefore, in this study we have investigated the serum level of Gal-3, IL-33 and soluble ST2 (sST2) in different stages of schizophrenia. Gal-3 levels were elevated in remission and lower in schizophrenia exacerbation in comparison with controls. Levels of IL-33 and sST2 are higher in schizophrenia exacerbation in comparison with controls and patients in remission. This initial analysis of new markers of neuroinflammation suggested their involvement in schizophrenia pathophysiology and/or cardiometabolic comorbidity

    Mechanism of DNA flexibility enhancement by HMGB proteins

    The mechanism by which sequence non-specific DNA-binding proteins enhance DNA flexibility is studied by examining complexes of double-stranded DNA with the high mobility group type B proteins HMGB2 (Box A) and HMGB1 (Box A+B) using atomic force microscopy. DNA end-to-end distances and local DNA bend angle distributions are analyzed for protein complexes deposited on a mica surface. For HMGB2 (Box A) binding we find a mean induced DNA bend angle of 78°, with a standard error of 1.3° and a SD of 23°, while HMGB1 (Box A+B) binding gives a mean bend angle of 67°, with a standard error of 1.3° and a SD of 21°. These results are consistent with analysis of the observed global persistence length changes derived from end-to-end distance measurements, and with results of DNA-stretching experiments. The moderately broad distributions of bend angles induced by both proteins are inconsistent with either a static kink model, or a purely flexible hinge model for DNA distortion by protein binding. Therefore, the mechanism by which HMGB proteins enhance the flexibility of DNA must differ from that of the Escherichia coli HU protein, which in previous studies showed a flat angle distribution consistent with a flexible hinge model

    Development and content validation of the Burden of Documentation for Nurses and Midwives (BurDoNsaM) survey

    Aim: To develop a validated tool to measure nursing and midwifery documentation burden. Background: While an important record of care, documentation can be burdensome for nurses and midwives and may remove them from direct patient care, resulting in decreased job satisfaction, associated with decreased patient satisfaction. The amount of documentation is increasing at a time where staff rationalisation results in decreasing numbers of clinicians at the bedside. No instrument is available to measure staff perceptions of the burden of clinical documentation. Design: Survey development, followed by rwo rounds of content validation (April and May 2019). Methods: Based on the literature a 28 item survey, with items in 6 subscales, representing key areas of documentation burden was developed. Item (I-CVI), subscale (S-CVI/Ave by subscale) and overall content validity indexes (S-CVI/Ave) were calculated following two review rounds by an expert panel of clinical and academic nurses and midwives. Results: Level of agreement for the first iteration of the survey was low, with many items failing to reach the critical I-CVI threshold of 0.78. No subscale reached a S-CVI/Ave above 0.8 and the overall scale only achieved a S-CVI/Ave score of 0.67. Thirteen items were removed, seven were edited and five new items added, based on the expert panel feedback, substantially improving the content validity. All individual items achieved an I-CVI ≥0.78, the S-CVI/Ave was above 0.85 for all subscales and the total S-CVI/Ave was 0.94. Conclusion: The Burden of Documentation for Nurses and Midwives (BurDoNsaM) survey can be considered as content valid, according to the content validity analysis by an expert panel. Impact: The BurDoNsaM survey may be used by nurse leaders and researchers to measure the burden of documentation, providing the opportunity to review practice and implement strategies to decrease documentation burden, potentially improving patient satisfaction with the care received
