Creative Placemaking: Building Partnerships to Create Change

    Get PDF
Arts, artists, and creative strategies can be critical vehicles for planning to achieve social, economic, and community goals. Creative placemaking is one type of arts-led planning that incorporates both stakeholder participation and community goals. Yet, questions exist around who participates in the creative placemaking process and to what end. Our study discusses a case where a state-sponsored workshop brings people from diverse backgrounds together to facilitate community development and engagement through creative placemaking. In particular, the event discussed in this study highlights how a one-shot intervention can reshape perceptions of creative placemaking held by planners, non-planners, artists, and non-artists. Our study also shows that while pre-workshop participants tended to identify resource-based challenges, post-workshop participants focused more on initiating collaborations and being responsive to community needs. The different attitudes before and after the state-sponsored workshop demonstrate the importance of facilitating stakeholder understanding and engagement for successful creative placemaking

    Prospects for natural SUSY

As we anticipate the first results of the 2016 run, we assess the discovery potential of the LHC to `natural supersymmetry'. To begin with, we explore the region of the model parameter space that can be excluded with various centre-of-mass energies (13 TeV and 14 TeV) and different luminosities (20 fb1^{-1}, 100 fb1^{-1}, 300 fb1^{-1} and 3000 fb1^{-1}). We find that the bounds at 95% CL on stops vary from mt~1900m_{\tilde{t}_1}\gtrsim 900 GeV expected this summer to mt~11500m_{\tilde{t}_1}\gtrsim 1500 GeV at the end of the high luminosity run, while gluino bounds are expected to range from mg~1700m_{\tilde{g}}\gtrsim 1700 GeV to mg~2500m_{\tilde{g}}\gtrsim 2500 GeV over the same time period. However, more pessimistically we find that if no signal begins to appear this summer, only a very small region of parameter space can be discovered with 5-σ\sigma significance. For this conclusion to change, we find that both theoretical and systematic uncertainties will need to be significantly reduced.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, minor changes, Phys.Rev.D versio

The variance homogeneity assumption and the traditional ANOVA: Exploring a better gatekeeper.

    Get PDF
Valid use of the traditional independent samples ANOVA procedure requires that the population variances are equal. Previous research has investigated whether variance homogeneity tests, such as Levene’s test, are satisfactory as gatekeepers for identifying when to use or not to use the ANOVA procedure. This research focuses on a novel homogeneity of variance test that incorporates an equivalence testing approach. Instead of testing the null hypothesis that the variances are equal against an alternate hypothesis that the variances are not equal, the equivalence-based test evaluates the null hypothesis that the difference in the variances falls outside or on the border of a predetermined interval against an alternate hypothesis that the difference in the variances falls within the predetermined interval. Thus, with the equivalence based procedure, the alternate hypothesis is aligned with the research hypothesis (variance equality). A simulation study demonstrated that the equivalence-based test of population variance homogeneity is a better gatekeeper for the ANOVA than traditional homogeneity of variance tests.SSHR

The dream for the Dalhousie Law Journal, included in the Foreword of the Journal’s first issue in 1973, was typically Dalhousie-modest: to have a “long and reasonably useful career.”1 As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, it’s clear that we have delivered on duration and over-delivered on purpose
