Congruency sequence effects and previous response times: conflict adaptation or temporal learning?
In the present study, we followed up on a recent report of two experiments in which the congruency sequence effect-the reduction of the congruency effect after incongruent relative to congruent trials in Stroop-like tasks-was observed without feature repetition or contingency learning confounds. Specifically, we further scrutinized these data to determine the plausibility of a temporal learning account as an alternative to the popular conflict adaptation account. To this end, we employed a linear mixed effects model to investigate the role of previous response time in producing the congruency sequence effect, because previous response time is thought to influence temporal learning. Interestingly, slower previous response times were associated with a reduced current-trial congruency effect, but only when the previous trial was congruent. An adapted version of the parallel episodic processing (PEP) model was able to fit these data if it was additionally assumed that attention "wanders" during different parts of the experiment (e.g., due to fatigue or other factors). Consistent with this assumption, the magnitude of the congruency effect was correlated across small blocks of trials. These findings demonstrate that a temporal learning mechanism provides a plausible account of the congruency sequence effect
Is Cycle 24 the Beginning of a Dalton-Like Minimum?
The unexpected development of cycle 24 emphasizes the need for a better way
to model future solar activity. In this article, we analyze the accumulation of
spotless days during individual cycles from 1798-2010. The analysis shows that
spotless days do not disappear abruptly in the transition towards an active
sun. A comparison with past cycles indicates that the ongoing accumulation of
spotless days is comparable to that of cycle 5 near the Dalton minimum and to
that of cycles 12, 14 and 15. It also suggests that the ongoing cycle has as
much as 20 \pm 8 spotless days left, from July 2010, before it reaches the next
solar maximum. The last spotless day is predicted to be in December 2012, with
an uncertainty of 11 months. This trend may serve as input to the solar dynamo

Removing the influence of feature repetitions on the congruency sequence effect: why regressing out confounds from a nested design will often fall short
This article illustrates a shortcoming of using regression to control for confounds in nested designs. As an example, we consider the congruency sequence effect, which is the observation that the congruency effect in distractor interference (e.g., Stroop) tasks is smaller following incongruent as compared with congruent trials. The congruency sequence effect is often interpreted as indexing conflict adaptation: a relative increase of attention to the target following incongruent trials. However, feature repetitions across consecutive trials can complicate this interpretation. To control for this confound, the standard procedure is to delete all trials with a stimulus or response repetition and analyze the remaining trials. Notebaert and Verguts (2007) present an alternative method that allows researchers to use all trials. Specifically, they employ multiple regression to model conflict adaptation independent of feature repetitions. We show here that this approach fails to account for certain feature repetition effects. Furthermore, modeling these additional effects is typically not possible because of an upper bound on the number of degrees of freedom in the experiment. These findings have important implications for future investigations of conflict adaptation and, more broadly, for all researchers who attempt to regress out confounds in nested designs
On-disc observations of flux rope formation prior to its eruption
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are one of the primary manifestations of solar activity and can drive severe space weather effects. Therefore, it is vital to work towards being able to predict their occurrence. However, many aspects of CME formation and eruption remain unclear, including whether magnetic flux ropes are present before the onset of eruption and the key mechanisms that cause CMEs to occur. In this work, the pre-eruptive coronal configuration of an active region that produced an interplanetary CME with a clear magnetic flux rope structure at 1 AU is studied. A forward-S sigmoid appears in extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) data two hours before the onset of the eruption (SOL2012-06-14), which is interpreted as a signature of a right-handed flux rope that formed prior to the eruption. Flare ribbons and EUV dimmings are used to infer the locations of the flux rope footpoints. These locations, together with observations of the global magnetic flux distribution, indicate that an interaction between newly emerged magnetic flux and pre-existing sunspot field in the days prior to the eruption may have enabled the coronal flux rope to form via tether-cutting-like reconnection. Composition analysis suggests that the flux rope had a coronal plasma composition, supporting our interpretation that the flux rope formed via magnetic reconnection in the corona. Once formed, the flux rope remained stable for two hours before erupting as a CME
Fermions on the Electroweak String
We construct a simple class of exact solutions of the electroweak theory
including the naked --string and fermion fields. It consists in the
--string configuration (), the {\it time} and components
of the neutral gauge bosons () and a fermion condensate
(lepton or quark) zero mode. The --string is not altered (no feed back from
the rest of fields on the --string) while fermion condensates are zero modes
of the Dirac equation in the presence of the --string background (no feed
back from the {\it time} and components of the neutral gauge bosons on the
fermion fields). For the case of the --vortex --string the number of zero
modes found for charged leptons and quarks is (according to previous results by
Jackiw and Rossi) equal to , while for (massless) neutrinos is .
The presence of fermion fields in its core make the obtained configuration a
superconducting string, but their presence (as well as that of

Comparison of data acquisition methods for the identification and quantification of histone post-translational modifications on a Q Exactive HF hybrid quadrupole Orbitrap mass spectrometer.
RATIONALE: Histone PTMs play key roles in regulating eukaryotic gene expression. Mass spectrometry (MS) has emerged as a powerful method to characterize and quantify histone PTMs as it allows unbiased identification and quantification of multiple histone PTMs including combinations of the modifications present. METHODS: In this study we compared a range of data acquisition methods for the identification and quantification of the histone PTMs using a Q Exactive HF Orbitrap. We compared three different data-dependent analysis (DDA) methods with MS2 resolutions of 120K, 60K, 30K. We also compared a range of data-independent analysis (DIA) methods using MS2 isolation windows of 20 m/z and DIAvw to identify and quantify histone PTMs in Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells. RESULTS: The increased number of MS2 scans afforded by the lower resolution methods resulted in a higher number of queries, peptide sequence matches (PSMs) and a higher number of peptide proteoforms with a Mascot Ion score greater than 46. No difference in the proportion of peptide proteoforms with Delta scores >17 was observed. Comparing the data acquisition methods increased repeatability in terms of lower CVs afforded by DIA MS1 60K MS2 30K 20m/z isolation windows was observed. CONCLUSION: We observed that DIA which offers advantages in flexibility and identification of isobaric peptide proteoforms performs as well as DDA in the analysis of histone PTMs. We were able to identify 71 modified histone peptides for histone H3 and H4 and quantified 64 across each of the different acquisition methods

Antigenic Relationships among Human Pathogenic Orientia tsutsugamushi Isolates from Thailand
Scrub typhus is a common cause of undiagnosed febrile illness in certain tropical regions, but can be easily treated with antibiotics. The causative agent, Orientia tsutsugamushi, is antigenically variable which complicates diagnosis and efforts towards vaccine development. Methodology/Principal Findings: This study aimed to dissect the antigenic and genetic relatedness of O. tsutsugamushi strains and investigate sero-diagnostic reactivities by titrating individual patient sera against their O. tsutsugamushi isolates (whole-cell antigen preparation), in homologous and heterologous serum-isolate pairs from the same endemic region in NE Thailand. The indirect immunofluorescence assay was used to titrate Orientia tsutsugamushi isolates and human sera, and a mathematical technique, antigenic cartography, was applied to these data to visualise the antigenic differences and cross-reactivity between strains and sera. No functional or antigen-specific analyses were performed. The antigenic variation found in clinical isolates was much less pronounced than the genetic differences found in the 56kDa type-specific antigen genes. The Karp-like sera were more broadly reactive than the Gilliam-like sera. Conclusions/Significance: Antigenic cartography worked well with scrub typhus indirect immunofluorescence titres. The data from humoral responses suggest that a Karp-like strain would provide broader antibody cross-reactivity than a Gilliam-like strain. Although previous exposure to O. tsutsugamushi could not be ruled out, scrub typhus patient serum antibody responses were characterised by strong homologous, but weak heterologous antibody titres, with little evidence for cross-reactivity by Gilliam-like sera, but a broader response from some Karp-like sera. This work highlights the importance of antigenic variation in O. tsutsugamushi diagnosis and determination of new serotypes

A geometric discretisation scheme applied to the Abelian Chern-Simons theory
We give a detailed general description of a recent geometrical discretisation
scheme and illustrate, by explicit numerical calculation, the scheme's ability
to capture topological features. The scheme is applied to the Abelian
Chern-Simons theory and leads, after a necessary field doubling, to an
expression for the discrete partition function in terms of untwisted
Reidemeister torsion and of various triangulation dependent factors. The
discrete partition function is evaluated computationally for various
triangulations of and of lens spaces. The results confirm that the
discretisation scheme is triangulation independent and coincides with the
