    An Analytical Model for a Twisted Beam Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Micromotor

    An equivalent circuit, known as a Mason model, is proposed to characterize a novel ultrasonic motor in this study. This motor, which consists of a non-circular cross-section twisted beam and a piezoelectric element, generates coupled longitudinal-torsional vibration upon application of an electric field. The model predictions and experimental data are in good agreement. For example, under the condition of having input voltage of 100 Vpp, and driving frequency of 352.8 kHz, the model predicts a longitudinal velocity of 0.7 m/s compared to the experimental results of 0.65-0.75 m/s. The assumption is that the torsional velocity and longitudinal velocity are in a linear relationship; a proportionality coefficient K=0.259±0.012 is obtained through the experimental data by empirically fitting

    Development of Monsoonal Asia Climate Risk Analysis Maprooms

    The Asian monsoon plays a major role in the variability of seasonal temperature and precipitation and the sub-seasonal statistics of these and other climate variables.  Due to its considerable impact on the quality and quantity of agricultural output, there is an essential need for greater understanding of the historical risk associated with the Asian monsoon, with the ultimate goal being better climate risk analysis to support agricultural decision-making in South and South East Asia. In response to partner demand expressed by the CCAFS South Asia Regional Program, CCAFS worked with the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) to develop a suite of online “Maproom” tools for analyzing agriculturally important aspects of climate variability, based on gridded historical daily precipitation and temperature data. This report documents the rationale, development of, and use of the Monsoon Asia Historical Precipitation and Temperature Monitoring Maprooms. These tools aim to provide enough flexibility to support a demanding range of analysis and decision support needs. The weather factors that impact agriculture, and the analyses that are needed to support agricultural decision-making, vary considerably by location, production system and time of year. These Maprooms serve as the precursors to the later developed of the Daily Climate Analysis Maprooms

    Vestibular evoked potentials (VsEPs) of cortical origin produced by impulsive acceleration applied at the nasion

    Abstract: We report the results of a study to record vestibular evoked potentials (VsEPs) of cortical origin produced by impulsive acceleration (IA). In a sample of 12 healthy participants, evoked potentials recorded by 70 channel electroencephalography were obtained by IA stimulation at the nasion and compared with evoked potentials from the same stimulus applied to the forefingers. The nasion stimulation gave rise to a series of positive and negative deflections in the latency range of 26–72 ms, which were dependent on the polarity of the applied IA. In contrast, evoked potentials from the fingers were characterised by a single N50/P50 deflection at about 50 ms and were polarity invariant. Source analysis confirmed that the finger evoked potentials were somatosensory in origin, i.e. were somatosensory evoked potentials, and suggested that the nasion evoked potentials plausibly included vestibular midline and frontal sources, as well as contributions from the eyes, and thus were likely VsEPs. These results show considerable promise as a new method for assessment of the central vestibular system by means of VsEPs produced by IA applied to the head

    Histological and histochemical characterisation of glands associated with the feeding appendages of Argulus foliaceus (Linnaeus, 1758)

    Argulus foliaceus (Linnaeus, 1758) is a member of the branchiuran family Argulidae, a group comprising parasitic “fish lice”. A. foliaceus is distributed worldwide and causes major economic impacts for cultured freshwater fish globally. The work described in this study was undertaken with the objective of identifying, describing and characterising glands associated with feeding in A. foliaceus. From structural and ultrastructural microscopic studies of A. foliaceus, three types of gland were determined to be associated with the pre-oral spine and mouth tube and were suggested to be involved in feeding activities. Two of these glands, the labial glands and the proboscis glands, appeared to secrete their products via the mouth tube and a third, the spinal gland, was connected directly to the pre-oral spine. The current study confirmed that the pre-oral spine delivers active secretions from the spinal gland, which may aid in immunomodulation, while the tubular labial spines and proboscis glands openings within the mouth tube may serve to enhance the feeding process by delivering salivary components to aid pre-digestion and immune-modulate the host. The suggested functions are supported by histological and histochemical staining, coupled with fluorescent lectin-binding assays, which enabled characterisation of the carbohydrate moieties associated with these glandular tissues

    Making sense of girls empowerment in Sierra Leone: a conversation

    This Testify article features a conversation about the emancipatory potentials and pitfalls of girls empowerment as practiced, experienced, and judged by Sierra Leonean activists. We – two scholars and four activists – discussed views on and experiences of girls empowerment approaches that have been interpreted in critical scholarly literature as a form of neoliberal responsibilization. Also within this critical literature, there is often the notion that these approaches may yet create openings for emancipatory agency and counter-conduct. However, it remains unclear whether this happens and to what extent. Our conversation centres activists’ views on the academic critique of girls empowerment and raises a number of questions, including: Why do many feminist activists in Sierra Leone embrace girls empowerment approaches? What do they see in them? How do they interpret and practice them? Where do they see potentials and pitfalls? And what is the role of donors

    Tailoring the supramolecular structure of amphiphilic glycopolypeptide analogue toward liver targeted drug delivery systems

    Amphiphilic glycopolypeptide analogues have harboured great importance in the development of targeted drug delivery systems. In this study, lactosylated pullulan-graft-arginine dendrons (LP-g-G3P) was synthesized using Huisgen azide-alkyne 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between lactosylated pullulan and generation 3 arginine dendrons bearing Pbf and Boc groups on the periphery. Hydrophilic lactosylated pullulan was selected for amphiphilic modification, aiming at specific lectin recognition. Macromolecular structure of LP-g-G3P combined alkyl, aromatic, and peptide dendritic hydrophobic moieties and was able to self-assemble spontaneously into core-shell nanoarchitectures with small particle sizes and low polydispersity in the aqueous media, which was confirmed by CAC, DLS and TEM. Furthermore, the polyaromatic anticancer drug (doxorubicin, DOX) was selectively encapsulated in the hydrophobic core through multiple interactions with the dendrons, including π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. Such multiple interactions had the merits of enhanced drug loading capacity (16.89 ± 2.41%), good stability against dilution, and excellent sustained release property. The cell viability assay presented that LP-g-G3P nanoparticles had an excellent biocompatibility both in the normal and tumor cells. Moreover, LP-g-G3P/DOX nanoparticles could be effectively internalized into the hepatoma carcinoma cells and dramatically inhibited cell proliferation. Thus, this approach paves the way to develop amphiphilic and biofunctional glycopolypeptide-based drug delivery systems.the European Commission Research and Innovation (PIRSES-GA-2011-295218

    Identification of proteins from the secretory/excretory products (SEPs) of the branchiuran ectoparasite Argulus foliaceus (Linnaeus, 1758) reveals unique secreted proteins amongst haematophagous ecdysozoa

    Background It is hypothesised that being a blood-feeding ectoparasite, Argulus foliaceus (Linnaeus, 1758), uses similar mechanisms for digestion and host immune evasion to those used by other haematophagous ecdysozoa, including caligid copepods (e.g. sea louse). We recently described and characterised glands associated with the feeding appendages of A. foliaceus using histological techniques. The work described in the present study is the first undertaken with the objective of identifying and partially characterising the components secreted from these glands using a proteomic approach. Methods Argulus foliaceus parasites were sampled from the skin of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), from Loch Fad on the Isle of Bute, Scotland, UK. The proteins from A. foliaceus secretory/excretory products (SEPs) were collected from the supernatant of artificial freshwater conditioned with active adult parasites (n = 5–9 per ml; n = 560 total). Proteins within the SEPs were identified and characterised using LC-ESI-MS/MS analysis. Data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD016226. Results Data mining of a protein database translated from an A. foliaceus dataset using ProteinScape allowed identification of 27 predicted protein sequences from the A. foliaceus SEPs, each protein matching the criteria of 2 peptides with at least 4 contiguous amino acids. Nine proteins had no matching sequence through OmicsBox (Blast2GO) analysis searches suggesting that Argulus spp. may additionally have unique proteins present in their SEPs. SignalP 5.0 software, identified 13 proteins with a signal sequence suggestive of signal peptides and supportive of secreted proteins being identified. Notably, the functional characteristics of identified A. foliaceus proteins/domains have also been described from the salivary glands and saliva of other blood-feeding arthropods such as ticks. Identified proteins included: transporters, peroxidases, metalloproteases, proteases and serine protease inhibitors which are known to play roles in parasite immune evasion/induction (e.g. astacin), immunomodulation (e.g. serpin) and digestion (e.g. trypsin). Conclusions To our knowledge, the present study represents the first proteomic analysis undertaken for SEPs from any branchiuran fish louse. Here we reveal possible functional roles of A. foliaceus SEPs in digestion and immunomodulation, with a number of protein families shared with other haematophagous ectoparasites.     Comparative Effectiveness of Smoking Cessation Medications among Schizophrenic Smokers

    Objective: To examine which medication could lead to a higher short and long term smoking abstinence in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using General Electric (GE) medical records database (1995 – 2011). The cohort consisted of adult smokers with diagnosis of schizophrenia newly initiating cessation medication. Short term and long term outcomes of cessation were measured at 3 weeks and 1 year. Descriptive and chi-square analyses were used to determine the frequencies and associations of patient characteristics with the abstinence outcomes. Logistic regression models were carried out to determine the predictors of short term and long term abstinence. Results: The cohort consisted of 3,976 patients. Abstinence rate was highest for Varenicline, followed by Bupropion, NRT, and lastly combination at week 12. At one year, abstinence rate was highest for Varenicline, followed by combination, NRT, and lastly Bupropion. Age, race, household locations and receiving counseling were associated with abstinence. No significant differences were found between cessation medications. Conclusions: There were no statistically significant differences in quitting with type of cessation medication. Predictors of better abstinence identified included older age, white race, western household location. These factors should be considered when designing future interventions for schizophrenic population as this minority population may need more tailored approaches to achieve a successful cessation outcome
