    Get PDF
CC chemokine ligand 3 like-1 (CCL3L1) encodes for CCL3L1 protein, which is a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) suppressive chemokine and a potent ligand of HIV CCR5 co-receptor. CCL3L1 exhibits variation in the gene copy number (CN) and could influence HIV susceptibility through gene dosage effect. The study aims to determine the distribution of CCL3L1 CN among HIV subjects of Malay, Chinese, and Indian ethnics in Malaysia and to evaluate the impact of CCL3L1 CN on susceptibility to HIV. This study involved 182 HIV patients who attended outpatient clinics of three hospitals in Malaysia and 150 non-HIV (control) subjects. Typing of CCL3L1 CN was conducted via multiplex paralogue ratio tests (PRTs), followed by validation of the CCL3L1 CN by microsatellite analyses. Both Malay and Indian HIV subjects had the CN mode of two, while the CN mode for the Chinese was four. The CCL3L1 gene CN was found to be strongly associated with ethnicity (p < 0.001) with the diverse distribution of CCL3L1 CN between the Malay (range = 0–6), Chinese (range = 0–9), and Indian (range = 1–4) ethnic groups. CCL3L1 CN higher than and equal to the average was associated with reduced HIV susceptibility among the Malays (p < 0.05). However, the negative results found for the Indian and Chinese need to be further analysed in a larger sample size

A study on experimental characteristics of microwave-assisted pyrolysis of palm kernel shell / Muhammad ‘Azim Jamaluddin et al.

    Get PDF
Pyrolysis of palm kernel shells was successfully done via microwave-assisted carbonization system with different microwave power levels at a fixed reaction time, nitrogen flow rate and sample mass of 30 minutes, 150 mL/min and 40 g, respectively. Temperature profiles, temperature rising rate and the char properties were analyzed in order to determine optimum conditions of the pyrolysis process using thermogravimetric, elemental and FTIR analysis. Increasing microwave power levels resulted in increasing of maximum reaction temperature as well as the temperature rising rate, with lower char production. The chars obtained at power 300, 600 and 1000 Watt have comparable properties in terms of fixed carbon, volatile matter contents and the calorific values with an average values of 60 wt%, 35 wt % and 30 MJ/kg, respectively. Evidently, low microwave power of 300 Watt was sufficient enough for a complete pyrolysis of palm kernel shells, thus proving that 300 Watt is the best power to obtain high quality chars for further applications in the industry

    Get PDF
This study was intended to obtain white rust (Puccinia horiana) disease resistance Chrysanthemum transformed with wasabi defensin gene through mediation of Agrobacterium tumefaciens from three explant sources, i.e., leaf, lateral shoot bud, and internode. Observations were made on transformation efficiency, PCR analysis, in vitro and ex vitro disease resistance tests. Results showed that efficiency of transgenic callus and shoot regeneration was found both highest from lateral shoot buds (57.5% and 50.0%, respectively). PCR analysis showed that three putative transgenic plantlets from lateral shoot buds and one from leaf explant were putative transgenic carrying the wasabi, hpt, and nptII genes. Rooting test showed that the highest number of rooted plants was found in treatment of hygromycin (Hg) 25 mg L-1 (81%) and lowest was in treatment combination of kanamycin (Km) 50 mg L-1 + Hg 25 mg L-1 (25%). In vitro disease resistance test with sorus inoculation of P. horiana, directly on the leaves, resulted in 20 resistant plants out of 30 putative transgenic plants (66.67%). Ex vitro testing on adult plants of the same samples in a confined closed greenhouse (CGH) resulted in average of 80% transgenic Chrysanthemum plants were resistant, whereas in control plants caused white rust disease symptom

Many significant psychosocial problems may go undetected and untreated in adolescents. We aim to determine the prevalence of high-risk behaviors among Malaysian adolescents. Retrospective data analysis was performed using data from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2017 report. The dataset included 27,497 responses from adolescents aged 13 to 17 years old from five established topographic zones: northern peninsular, east coast peninsular, southern peninsular, central, and east Malaysia. The strength of associations between selected high-risk behaviors and different topographical zones were performed using logistic regression analysis. Adolescents from the northern peninsular reported the highest prevalence of suicidal attempt (27.1%) and active drug user (30.1%). The same region reported the highest prevalence of those who ever had sexual intercourse (SI) (27.2%), with 32.5% who had their first SI before 14 years old, while east Malaysia reported the highest prevalence of current smokers (26.1%) and current alcohol consumers (30.6%). Overall poor lifestyle choices were evident in the northern peninsular region. Hence, specific districts breakdown may enable targeted interventional lifestyle strategies for adolescents at risk

Leveraging the findings of the extant body of literature, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia, like any other country of the world, are central to economic development, industrial development, job creation and poverty reduction. Nevertheless, given the megatrends, which represent huge transformative global forces with far-reaching effect on individuals, society, culture, business and economies, and the need for enhancement of Malaysian SMEs to facilitate the achievement of Malaysian SME master plan (2012–2020), Malaysian SMEs are left with no option other than aligning their policies and strategies with the megatrends, which demands that SMEs should provide ‘added-value’ services, and products, or high-quality and innovative products and services. SMEs could achieve this through the strategic development of the firm’s rare, inimitable and non-substitutable human resource. To offer empirical insights on this issue, this study investigated the mediating role of employee creativity in the high-performance work practices (HPWPs)–performance nexus. Via the cross-sectional research approach, data were collected from a sample of 287 managers of Malaysian SMEs in Kedah, Penang and Perak states of Malaysia. The partial least squares algorithm and the bootstrapping technique were used for data analysis. The overall findings signify the mediating effect of employee creativity on job design–performance nexus, indicating that job design, which facilitates workers’ autonomy to utilize their capabilities, would enable and stimulate the workers to adapt their approaches to meet the unique needs of the customers and the transformative global forces, because digital transformation has changed SMEs’ operations and delivery models. Also, HPWPs that focus on development of creative problem-solving skill can enhance workers’ ability to generate alternative solutions, product knowledge and customer service skills which are crucial to creativity in the organization. Finally, the implications, limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed

Understanding the patterns of genetic diversity of species and precise stock identification are important in fisheries conservation management. However, studies on genetic diversity, connectivity, population structure, and gene flow of groupers within the Indo-Malaya Archipelago (IMA) waters are limited. The objective of the present study was to examine the phylogeographic patterns of the family Epinephelidae in IMA waters based on a parallel study of five selected species utilizing the mitochondrial COI. The grouper species were: areolate grouper (Epinephelus areolatus), blacktip grouper (Epinephelus fasciatus), six-bar grouper (Epinephelus sexfasciatus), blue-lined hind (Cephalopholis formosa), and white-edged lyretail (Variola albimarginata). Specimens were obtained from fish landing sites and fish markets from 23 locations throughout the IMA waters. This study showed genetic structuring for two species (Epinephelus areolatus and Variola albimarginata) but genetic homogeneity for the other three investigated species across IMA. Various geological and demographic histories, local and regional oceanographic features, and biological characteristics are hypothesized to shape the present genetic pattern of each species across the IMA waters. The establishment of effective international cooperation is encouraged to manage grouper species stocks in this region
