Evaluating the impact of restructuring secondary education in East Timor

    Get PDF
The Timorese Government has embarked upon several approaches to empower national education, namely through the restructuring of the secondary education. Due to the lack of skilled professionals in education, East Timor has resorted to the support of international cooperation with institutions such as the University of Aveiro, in Portugal. In this paper, we present a starting project that aims at investigating how the new curriculum of secondary education in East Timor is being implemented, through its monitoring and short-term exploratory evaluation. At its core, this project seeks to provide constructive feedback both to the authors of the curriculum, as well as to Timorese stakeholders. Furthermore, this project constitutes a unique opportunity to closely follow, in the context of international cooperation, the process of the restructuring of an education system in a developing country, boosting the relationships between the researchers, the authors of the restructuring and the Timorese stakeholders

Self-regulation of unattainable goals in suicide attempters: the relationship between goal disengagement, goal reengagement and suicidal ideation

There is growing interest in models of adaptive self-regulation. Recent research suggests that goal disengagement and goal reengagement (i.e., goal adjustment) are implicated in the self-regulation of emotion. This study extends the self-regulation research to investigate the utility of goal adjustment in understanding suicidal risk. To this end, two hundred adults hospitalised following a suicidal episode completed a range of clinical and psychological measures in hospital and were followed up approximately 2.5 months after discharge (Time 2). Hierarchical regression analyses showed that goal reengagement predicted suicidal ideation at Time 2. In addition, the lack of goal reengagement was especially pernicious when reported concomitantly with high disengagement. These predictive effects were independent of baseline mood, attempt status and suicidal intent. The theoretical and clinical implications are discussed

In Peru, three out of the four «memory museums» located in rural Ayacucho region were closed down a few years after they were created. These aborted attempts underline the fragility of dissemination policies of memory sites promoted in recent years in this country. They also raise issues about conflicting memories of the armed conflict at the end of the 20th century. This paper outlines an analysis of self-representation and production of new territories phenomena and of the process of institutionalizing mediation in the context of a multi-cultural country like Peru.

The «Qhapaq Ñan» (main Andean road) is a unprecedented example of institutionalization of memory in contemporary Peru, characterized by four aspects: the central role given to scientists and international organizations favors the emergence of patterns of development and heritage listing; the Peruvian State tends to stress a symbolic representation of territory for the benefit of a globalized audience; the «Peace march», a political initiative well grounded in the local context, was rewarded by significant popular success, but the elite did not follow it up; finally, sustainable tourism projects based on conservation and authenticity goals have failed to put their proposals in practice. The original objectives stressing participation of local communities were not achieved on a lasting basis. These findings underline conflicting issues of representation of the Peruvian Andean territory in the context of a pluricultural society.
