Eugenics and the woman question in the works of selected Polish catholic humanists in the period 1918-1939

Tak, jak w I połowie XX wieku rozpowszechnione było myślenie oparte o założenia eugeniczne, tak również rozpowszechniona była jego krytyka. W części pochodziła ona z przyjmowania perspektywy Kościoła katolickiego przez humanistów, pedagogów, którzy w odniesieniu do nauki społecznej Kościoła budowali swoje koncepcje pedagogiczne. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest pokazanie podstawowych elementów krytyki stanowiska eugeników z punktu widzenia polskich pedagogów katolickich z lat 1918-1939. Krytyka ta istniała, podnosiła podstawowe wątki charakterystyczne dla stanowiska Kościoła Katolickiego, ale prowadzono ją m.in. - co interesujące - z punktu widzenia "interesów" kobiety. Wprowadzenie zasad eugeniki, choć w środowiskach ją aprobujących było przedstawiane jako sposób emancypacji, w opisywanym środowisku traktowano jako drogę do demoralizacji i degradacji kobiety jako osoby.In the first half of the 20th century, thinking based on eugenics premises was as common as its critique, which partly resulted from assumption of the perspective of the catholic church by humanists and pedagogues, who built their pedagogical conceptions on social teaching of the Church. The present paper aims at presenting the basic elements of criticism of the eugenics stance from the perspective of Polish catholic educators in the years 1918-1939. Such criticism existed and addressed the fundamental themes characteristic of the Catholic Church's position, but it was executed, among others - and that's interesting - from the perspective of women's "interest". Although within introduction of the eugenics principles was presented within the circles that accepted it as a way of emancipation, within the abovesaid environment was treated as a path of demoralization and degradation of the woman as a person

In particular, I focus on the relationships which according to him exist between character education and the rebirth of Polish independence. Postawy osób starszych wobec starości

Aging is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. This situation has consequences for social, health, economic and educational policies. In the face of these changes, it is important for a person working with seniors to be well prepared for challenges at work. From this perspective, it is important to learn about the attitudes of seniors towards their own old age. It will help to understand the functioning of the individual in old age. An analysis of the literature on the subject indicates that the attitudes of other people towards seniors and the perception of their own old age affect how an individual ages and how he/she assesses his/her quality of life. Knowledge of attitudes towards old age can be used to plan activities for active aging. The article is a review and summarizes the state of knowledge about attitudes towards old age contained in the Polish literature on the subject. It also integrates existing knowledge about attitudes towards old age. The aim of the article was to present the most important concepts of attitudes towards old age and to indicate the area of application of this knowledge to social work practice (both its inclusion in curricula as well as accessibility for social workers). Taking into account the criterion of the review article, the focus was put on justifying the need to take up this subject in view of aging societies, providing a definitive definition of the concept of “attitude”, its relation to the concept of attitudes towards old age, and the most important typologies of attitudes towards old age. The summary presents some practical conclusions for the practice of social work.Starzenie się społeczeństw jest jednym z największych wyzwań XXI w. Sytuacja ta niesie za sobą konsekwencje dla polityki społecznej, zdrowotnej, gospodarczej i edukacyjnej. W obliczu zachodzących zmian ważne jest dobre przygotowanie do pracy osób pracujących z seniorami. Z tej perspektywy istotne jest zapoznanie się z postawami seniorów wobec własnej starości. Pomogą one zrozumieć funkcjonowanie jednostki w starości. Analiza literatury przedmiotu wskazuje, że postawy innych osób wobec seniorów oraz sposób postrzegania własnej starości wpływają na to, jak jednostka się starzeje i jak ocenia jakość swojego życia. Znajomość postaw wobec starości można wykorzystać do planowania działań na rzecz aktywnego starzenia się. Artykuł ma charakter przeglądowy i stanowi podsumowanie wiedzy na temat postaw wobec starości zawartej w polskiej literaturze przedmiotu oraz integruje dotychczasową wiedzę na temat postaw wobec starości. Celem opracowania było przybliżenie najważniejszych koncepcji postaw wobec starości oraz wskazanie obszaru zastosowania tej wiedzy do praktyki pracy socjalnej (zarówno uwzględnienie jej w programach nauczania, jak i udostępnienie pracownikom socjalnym). Uwzględniając kryterium przeglądowości, skoncentrowano się na: uzasadnieniu konieczności podjęcia tej tematyki z uwagi na starzejące się społeczeństwa, podaniu definicyjnego ujęcia pojęcia „postawa”, odniesieniu się do koncepcji postaw wobec starości. Ponadto przedstawiono najważniejsze typologie postaw wobec starości. W podsumowaniu zamieszczono kilka praktycznych wniosków dotyczących praktyki pracy socjalnej

Ideały wychowawcze kobiet w twórczości Stanisława Podoleńskiego

Refleksja dotycząca ideałów wychowawczych nieodłącznie wiąże się z działalnością wychowawczą człowieka. Wychowując następne pokolenia musimy przecież mieć przed oczyma jakieś wyobrażenie wiedzy, umiejętności, cech i właściwości, które chcielibyśmy, aby nasz wychowanek posiadał w przyszłości. W niniejszym artykule zdecydowałam się na ukazanie koncepcji ideału wychowawczego kobiety okresu międzywojennego w twórczości Stanisława Podoleńskiego, kierując się szeroko zakreślaną w jego artykułach i książkach problematyką kobiecą. Przeprowadzone rekonstrukcja może pozwolić na lepsze zrozumienie specyfiki wychowania i kształcenia kobiet w Polsce w okresie międzywojennym, a także może stanowić jeden z elementów umożliwiających prześledzenie zmian w zakresie teleologii edukacyjnej w Polsce w XX i XXI wieku.Reflection on educational ideals is inseparable from man’s educational activity. While providing education, we must have a vision of knowledge, skills, features, and qualities, we would like our student to possess in the future. For the purpose of this paper, I have decided to present the concept of ideal of female education of the interwar period in the works of Stanisław Podoleński, based on a broad scope of female-related issues addressed in his articles and books. Executing a reconstruction may enable us to under-stand the specifi c character of women’s education and schooling in the Poland of the inter-war period and may constitute an element z allowing us to trace changes within the fi eld of educational teleology which occurred in Poland in the 20th and 21st century

Concepts of Family Policy in Prawo i Sprawiedliwość [Law and Justice’s] Election Programmes in the Years 2007–2014

Within the context of an increased interest in family and family policy, as well as political and social changes that have been occurring in Poland lately (parliamentary election, gaining power by the Law and Justice party, introduction of new instruments of family policy), it is worth having a look at both projects and changes in family social policy over the course of time and proposals of optimum solutions for families put forward by the ruling political party. Thus, politicians are the ones, who, through their visions and projects, affect directly the creation of formal, legal framework of the family’s functioning, determine the direction and forms of legislative initiatives undertaken within the scope of family policy, while their ideas and notions are verified by the society expressed in the results of parliamentary elections. Therefore, in this article, I shall analyse the proposed solutions for family-related problems expressed over the years 2007–2014 in the election programmes of politicians of Law and Justice – a political party, whose goals in and plans expressed in their election programme, considering the results of parliamentary elections and public support poles in present time Poland, are, and will be, shaping family policy in Poland over the next several years.Koncepcja polityki wobec rodziny w programach wyborczych Prawa i Sprawiedliwości z lat 2007–2014W kontekście zwiększonego zainteresowania rodziną i polityką wobec rodziny oraz zmianami polityczno-społecznymi zachodzącymi ostatnio w Polsce (wybory parlamentarne, zdobycie władzy przez Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, wprowadzenie w życie nowych instrumentów polityki rodzinnej), warto przyjrzeć się projektom, a także przemianom w czasie polityki społecznej skierowanej ku rodzinie, propozycjom rozwiązań optymalnych dla rodziny wysuwanych przez partię polityczną będącą obecnie u władzy. To politycy bowiem, poprzez swoje wizje i projekty, mają bezpośredni wpływ na tworzenie formalnych, prawnych ram funkcjonowania rodziny, stanowią o kierunkach i formie podejmowanych inicjatyw legislacyjnych z zakresu polityki wobec rodziny, ich pomysły i propozycje są poddawane weryfikacji społecznej w rezultacie wyników wyborów parlamentarnych. Dlatego w niniejszym artykule chciałabym poddać analizie propozycje rozwiązań problemów rodziny, jakie w swoich programach wyborczych na przestrzeni lat 2007–2016 wysuwali politycy PiS – ugrupowania politycznego, którego cele i plany zawarte w programie wyborczym, zważywszy na wyniki wyborów parlamentarnych oraz sondaże poparcia społecznego we współczesnej Polsce, kształtują i będą kształtować polską politykę wobec rodziny w ciągu najbliższych lat

SOCIO-EDUCATIONAL CONTEXTS OF THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF SENIORS

One of the most important phenomena of the changing world is aging of population. With the growing number of older people it is necessary to focus on this part of population. It is also important to allow seniors active participation in social life. The aging population provides us with many interesting materials for scientific consideration and one of them is the socio-educational contexts of the seniors' quality of life. The purpose of this study is to analyse the theoretical basis of quality of life of seniors and to highlight the relevant factors affecting the quality of life in relation to older people. In this paper it is shown how education can affect the quality of life of older people not only in terms of acquiring new knowledge, but also in the context of establishing social relations and social activation. The study focous on a theoretical study and an attempt to analyse the available data on the participation of Polish seniors in education.

"Constitutionalisation" of consumer rights in European and Polish law

Protection of consumer rights must be considered as a new legal phenomenon. Although – as one of the EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner once said – the need for consumer protection is amongst the oldest of all: in the field of contract is as old as the world itself as evidenced by the fact that the first ever consumer contract was made between Eve and the serpent. The snake sold her the apple on the basis of misleading advertising, the product did not conform to a promise given by the seller and the contract included a clause exempting the snake from any liability for damage caused by the defective product. In fact it is only the second half of the XX century which experienced the actual evolution of the protection of consumer rights. It is generally accepted that the consumer rights were first emphasized and acknowledged in President J.F Kennedy’s famous Message to the Congress on 15 March 1962. In this message he not only used the now famous phrase “we all are consumers” but also spelled out the now recognized fundamental consumer rights (the right to safety, the right to information, the right to choose and the right to be heard) (Łętowska, 2004: s. 4). The aim of this essay is to examine the process of creating and constituting consumer rights under European and Polish law. First of all the legal basis for distinguishing such rights will be examined and thereafter the substance of these rights will be defined and their independence evaluated
