Spin-polarized tunneling spectroscopy in tunnel junctions with half-metallic electrodes
We have studied the magnetoresistance (TMR) of tunnel junctions with
electrodes of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 and we show how the variation of the conductance
and TMR with the bias voltage can be exploited to obtain a precise information
on the spin and energy dependence of the density of states. Our analysis leads
to a quantitative description of the band structure of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 and
allows the determination of the gap delta between the Fermi level and the
bottom of the t2g minority spin band, in good agreement with data from
spin-polarized inverse photoemission experiments. This shows the potential of
magnetic tunnel junctions with half-metallic electrodes for spin-resolved

Influence of anthropometric parameters and biochemical markers of bone metabolism on quantitative ultrasound of bone in the institutionalized elderly
The assessment of bone quality by quantitative ultrasound (QUS), a transportable and relatively cheap method, shows some correlations with bone mineral density (BMD) as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and with fracture risk. To examine its correlation with bone metabolism in a population of institutionalized elderly people known to be at high risk for vitamin D deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism, QUS of the calcaneus and biochemical parameters were measured in 264 women aged 85±7 (SD) years and in 103 men aged 81±8 years living in 19 nursing homes. Vitamin D deficiency was frequent in this population: 41.9% of the women and 31.4% of the men had a serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (25OHD) level below the 2.5th percentile level of 3276 normal Swiss adults (6.2 ”g/l or 15.5 mmol/l). Hyperparathyroidism was less frequent: serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were above the 97.5th percentile level of normal adults (70 pg/l) in 18.9% of women and 9.8% of men. In women, QUS data correlated significantly with age (r=â0.297), body mass index (BMI) (r=0.403), calcium (r=0.220), PTH (r=â0.296), 25OHD (r=0.298) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) (r=â0.170) for broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), and with age (r=â0.195), BMI (r=0.208), PTH (r=â0.174), 25OHD (r=0.140) and AP (r=â0.130) for speed of sound (SOS). In men, ultrasound data correlated with BMI (r=0.326), calcium (r=0.199), 25OHD (r=0.258) and AP (r=â0.311) for BUA, and with AP (r=â0.196) for SOS. In women, but not in men because of their smaller number, a multivariate analysis was performed to examine relationships between age, BMI, biochemical markers and QUS. Age, BMI, PTH and phosphate explained 30% of the variance of BUA and 10% for SOS. Impact of minority concentration on fundamental (H)D ICRF heating performance in JET-ILW
ITER will start its operation with non-activated hydrogen and helium plasmas at a reduced magnetic field of B-0 = 2.65 T. In hydrogen plasmas, the two ion cyclotron resonance frequency (ICRF) heating schemes available for central plasma heating (fundamental H majority and 2nd harmonic He-3 minority ICRF heating) are likely to suffer from relatively low RF wave absorption, as suggested by numerical modelling and confirmed by previous JET experiments conducted in conditions similar to those expected in ITER's initial phase. With He-4 plasmas, the commonly adopted fundamental H minority heating scheme will be used and its performance is expected to be much better. However, one important question that remains to be answered is whether increased levels of hydrogen (due to e. g. H pellet injection) jeopardize the high performance usually observed with this heating scheme, in particular in a full-metal environment. Recent JET experiments performed with the ITER-likewall shed some light onto this question and the main results concerning ICRF heating performance in L-mode discharges are summarized here
Co-doped (La,Sr)TiO3-d: a high-Curie temperature diluted magnetic system with large spin-polarization
We report on tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) experiments that demonstrate
the existence of a significant spin polarization in Co-doped (La,Sr)TiO3-d
(Co-LSTO), a ferromagnetic diluted magnetic oxide system (DMOS) with high Curie
temperature. These TMR experiments have been performed on magnetic tunnel
junctions associating Co-LSTO and Co electrodes. Extensive structural analysis
of Co-LSTO combining high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Auger
electron spectroscopy excluded the presence of Co clusters in the Co-LSTO layer
and thus, the measured ferromagnetism and high spin polarization are intrinsic
properties of this DMOS. Our results argue for the DMOS approach with complex
oxide materials in spintronics

Full oxide heterostructure combining a high-Tc diluted ferromagnet with a high-mobility conductor
We report on the growth of heterostructures composed of layers of the
high-Curie temperature ferromagnet Co-doped (La,Sr)TiO3 (Co-LSTO) with
high-mobility SrTiO3 (STO) substrates processed at low oxygen pressure. While
perpendicular spin-dependent transport measurements in STO//Co-LSTO/LAO/Co
tunnel junctions demonstrate the existence of a large spin polarization in
Co-LSTO, planar magnetotransport experiments on STO//Co-LSTO samples evidence
electronic mobilities as high as 10000 cm2/Vs at T = 10 K. At high enough
applied fields and low enough temperatures (H < 60 kOe, T < 4 K) Shubnikov-de
Haas oscillations are also observed. We present an extensive analysis of these
quantum oscillations and relate them with the electronic properties of STO, for
which we find large scattering rates up to ~ 10 ps. Thus, this work opens up
the possibility to inject a spin-polarized current from a high-Curie
temperature diluted oxide into an isostructural system with high-mobility and a
large spin diffusion length.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.
On the Treewidth of Dynamic Graphs
Dynamic graph theory is a novel, growing area that deals with graphs that
change over time and is of great utility in modelling modern wireless, mobile
and dynamic environments. As a graph evolves, possibly arbitrarily, it is
challenging to identify the graph properties that can be preserved over time
and understand their respective computability.
In this paper we are concerned with the treewidth of dynamic graphs. We focus
on metatheorems, which allow the generation of a series of results based on
general properties of classes of structures. In graph theory two major
metatheorems on treewidth provide complexity classifications by employing
structural graph measures and finite model theory. Courcelle's Theorem gives a
general tractability result for problems expressible in monadic second order
logic on graphs of bounded treewidth, and Frick & Grohe demonstrate a similar
result for first order logic and graphs of bounded local treewidth.
We extend these theorems by showing that dynamic graphs of bounded (local)
treewidth where the length of time over which the graph evolves and is observed
is finite and bounded can be modelled in such a way that the (local) treewidth
of the underlying graph is maintained. We show the application of these results
to problems in dynamic graph theory and dynamic extensions to static problems.
In addition we demonstrate that certain widely used dynamic graph classes
naturally have bounded local treewidth
