    Configuration of the Crucial Set for a Quadratic Rational Map

    Let KK be a complete, algebraically closed non-archimedean valued field, and let φ(z)K(z)\varphi(z) \in K(z) have degree two. We describe the crucial set of φ\varphi in terms of the multipliers of φ\varphi at the classical fixed points, and use this to show that the crucial set determines a stratification of the moduli space M2(K)\mathcal{M}_2(K) related to the reduction type of φ\varphi. We apply this to settle a special case of a conjecture of Hsia regarding the density of repelling periodic points in the non-archimedean Julia set

    Tests of N.A.C.A. airfoils in the variable-density wind tunnel Series 24

    This note is the fifth of a series covering an investigation of a number of related airfoils. It presents the results obtained from tests of a group of six low-cambered airfoils in the variable-density wind tunnel. The mean camber lines are identical for the six airfoils and are of such a form that the maximum mean camber is 2 per cent of the chord and is at a position 0.4 of the chord behind the loading edge. The airfoils differ in thickness only, the maximum-thickness/chord ratios being 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, 0.15, 0.18, and 0.21. The results have been presented in the form of both infinite and finite aspect-ratio characteristics. The values of C(sub L) max/C(sub d) degrees min for this group of airfoils are among the highest thus far obtained, the minimum profile drags being approximately equal to those for the symmetrical series of corresponding thickness, while the maximum lift coefficients are considerably higher

    Selection of desiccant equipment at altitude

    ASHRAE Standard 139 provides parameters which are used in the desiccant industry to calculate the performance of a desiccant dehumidifier. This performance can be obtained from any manufacturer by means of performance curves or selection software. However, these performance parameters are generally rated at sea-level conditions. Although some manufacturers provide a means for estimating the performance at altitude based on sea-level conditions, there is no set methodology that is accepted by all. The scope of this project involves investigating how the performance parameters are affected by altitude and develop a general methodology that can be applied to any desiccant wheel. Mississippi State University and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory both conducted tests and compared the results. It was found that, by keeping mass flow rate, inlet temperature, and inlet humidity ratio constant between sea-level and altitude, the pressure drop through the wheel was influenced the most by altitude

    It was the purpose of this study to determine statistically the effect of an Exer-Genie isometric-isotonic conditioning program on the jumping ability and cardiovascular fitness of junior high school athletes, as compared to a group of junior high school athletes involved in a routine conditioning program using calisthenics. The Sargent Jump Test was used to determine jumping ability and the Cameron Heartometer was used to determine cardiovascular fitness. Each group was compared in view of time spent on conditioning

    Leopold Eidlitz (1823-1908) was born in Prague and trained in Vienna as a land manager, a position in which he would have worked for the Austrian government as a building inspector or designer of small, rural structures. He came to the United States seeking work as an architect in 1843. Arriving alone, he quickly settled into American society, and within three years moved from a job with Richard Upjohn, the English-born designer of Trinity Church, Wall Street, into his own practice. He subsequently married into an old New England family and began a career in which he worked with the most prominent members of the New York City and State political and architectural communities Although Eidlitz\u27s architectural ideas were progressive, they were not unique for their time. He held that a building\u27s massing should emerge from its plan, that materials should be used in a rational manner, and that ornament should be used to enhance structure, materials, and function. For these reasons, some have considered him an organicist or proto-functionalist. However, his philosophical and architectural concerns were more complex. Eidlitz approved of the emerging convergence of engineering and architecture, but he also believed in the socially redemptive role for art advanced by German Idealist philosophers. He considered architecture to be an art and was certain that science would assure its progress by eliminating the arbitrariness associated with indefinable and unsupportable notions of taste. In this way, art would be reconciled with technology and assure its progress. Emulation of or rupture with the past would not be necessary for architecture because beautiful forms would be valued for the knowledge they imparted rather than the precedent they conveyed
