There is power in general equilibrium

The article develops a general equilibrium model where power relations are central in the determination of unemployment, profitability, and income distribution. The paper contributes to the market forces versus institutions debate by providing a unified model capable of identifying key interrelations between technical and institutional changes in the economy. Empirically, the model is used to gauge the relative roles of technology and institutions in the behavior of the labor share, the unemployment rate, the capital-output ratio, and business profitability and demonstrates how they complement each other in providing an adequate narrative to the structural changes of the US economy

Back to the Surplus: An Unorthodox Neoclassical Model of Growth, Distribution and Unemployment with Technical Change

The article examines how institutions, automation, unemployment and income distribution interact in the context of a neoclassical growth model where profits are interpreted as a surplus over costs of production. Adjusting the model to the experience of the US economy, I show that joint variations in labor institutions and technology are required to provide reasonable explanations for the behavior of income shares, capital returns, unemployment, and the big ratios in macroeconomics. The model offers new perspectives on recent trends by showing that they can be analyzed by the interrelation between the profit-making capacity of capitalist economies and the political environment determining labor institutions

Apunta el autor que dicha novela, que ha resultado ser una de las mejores del modernismo hispanoamericano, tiene como su gran protagonista a la selva, ese frondoso y tupido espacio de naturaleza salvaje e indómita. La mezcla de los peligros que entraña ese extraño mundo vegetal y animal con los peores vicios del ser humano occidental (la ambición, la crueldad, el deseo de dominio) da como resultado un ambiente cuasi infernal del que es muy difícil escapar. Por eso, a pesar de la magnífica e impresionante belleza de la selva, casi todos los hombres que se internan en ella se ven sometidos a la desesperación y a la locura. Pues se necesitaría cierta pureza espiritual, cierta concepción del mundo y de su delgado equilibrio (como las que mantenían las culturas aborígenes americanas previo a la conquista) para mantenerse sano y salvo en medio de tantos excesos naturales y humanos

La mayoría de las veces excluidos de la historiografía, no digamos laboral, la historia de las mujeres y los niños tiende a quedar descartada por limitar su participación al ámbito doméstico y considerar que se debe investigar desde la vida privada; sin embargo, la historiografía más reciente reconoce su participación en los procesos históricos importantes. En esta investigación podemos explorar algunos elementos que nos darán una idea (ya que no podemos tener la certeza de su modo de vida, debido a la falta de documentos que los incluyan como prioritarios en este tiempo) y entender cómo se convirtió en relevante el trabajo femenino para el periodo de la industrialización
