Quantitative trait loci mapping for resistance to maize streak virus in F2: 3 population of tropical maize
Open Access Article; Published online: 01 Feb 2020Maize streak virus (MSV) continues to be a major biotic constraint for maize production throughout Africa. Concerning the quantitative nature of inheritance of resistance to MSV disease (MSVD), we sought to identify new loci for MSV resistance in maize using F2:3 population. The mapping population was artificially inoculated with viruliferous leafhoppers under screenhouse and evaluated for MSVD resistance. Using 948 DArT markers, we identified 18 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with different components of MSVD resistance accounting for 3.1–21.4% of the phenotypic variance, suggesting that a total of eleven genomic regions covering chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 are probably required for MSVD resistance. Two new genomic regions on chromosome 4 revealed the occurrence of co-localized QTLs for different parameters associated with MSVD resistance. Moreover, the consistent appearance of QTL on chromosome 7 for MSVD resistance is illustrating the need for fine-mapping of this locus. In conclusion, these QTLs could provide additional source for breeders to develop MSV resistance

Gefäßchirurgische Ausbildung in endovaskulären Techniken am Universitären Gefäßzentrum Aarau-Basel
Zusammenfassung: Endovaskuläre Techniken gewinnen in der gefäßchirurgischen Praxis zunehmend an Bedeutung und müssen deshalb in die Ausbildung integriert werden. Die gefäßchirurgische Ausbildung in der Schweiz umfasst nach neuen Richtlinien das Beherrschen von endovaskulären Techniken und fordert die Durchführung von mindestens 50 Katheterisierungen/Angiographien und 25 interventionellen Eingriffen. An unserer Klinik stützt sich die interventionelle Ausbildung auf verschiedene Pfeiler. Wichtig ist eine gute interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit mit der Abteilung für interventionelle Radiologie, die konsequente Durchführung der Kontrollangiographie bei offenen Operationen und Virtual-Reality-Training. Unter diesen Bedingungen ist eine Ausbildung möglich, die den schweizerischen Richtlinien entspricht. Percutaneous Cervical Vertebroplasty in a MultifunctionalImage-Guided Therapy Suite: Hybrid Lateral Approach to C1 andC4 Under CT and Fluoroscopic Guidance
A 76-year-old patient suffering from two painful osteolytic metastases in C1 and C4 underwent percutaneous vertebroplasty by a hybrid technique in a multi-functional image-guided therapy suite (MIGTS). Two trocars were first placed into the respective bodies of C1 and C4 under fluoroscopic computed tomography guidance using a lateral approach. Thereafter, the patient was transferred on a moving table to the digital subtraction angiography unit in the same room for implant injection. Good pain relief was achieved by this minimally invasive procedure without complications. A hybrid approach for vertebroplasty in a MIGTS appears to be safe and feasible and might be indicated in selected cases for difficult accessible lesion
Extensive Iatrogenic Aortic Dissection During Renal Angioplasty: Successful Treatment with a Covered Stent-Graft
An extensive iatrogenic aortic type B dissection during percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA) for bilateral renal artery stenosis was treated with a covered stent placed in the right renal artery. Control angiography confirmed closure of the entry. Postprocedural CT demonstrated a thick intramural hematoma (IMH) up to the left subclavian artery. CT follow-up at 8 months showed an almost complete resorption of the IMH. While medical treatment is the standard therapy for type B dissections, closure of the intimal tear with a covered stent may be an additional option in extensive cases during PTR
Identifying climate change information needs for the himalayan region: Results from the GLACINDIA Stakeholder Workshop and Training Program
Here we present results of a workshop designed to bring together stakeholders from different states of the Indian side of the Himalayan arc and an international group of climate scientists in order to discuss how climate change research for this region can be tailored toward the needs of local communities. The stakeholder workshop was jointly organized by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India, and the Climate Service Center 2.0, Hamburg, Germany, within the framework of the multidisciplinary international research project GLACINDIA. The project focuses on the water-related effects of changes in glacier mass balance and river runoff in western Himalayas. Given the research focus of the GLACINDIA project, the initial focus of the workshop was on glacier-related hydrological information. During stakeholder interactions the resulting discussion covered a much broader range of urgent climate change information needs for the Himalayan region.publishedVersio
Assembly of a Three-Dimensional Multitype Bronchiole Coculture Model Using Magnetic Levitation
A longstanding goal in biomedical research has been to create organotypic cocultures that faithfully represent
native tissue environments. There is presently great interest in representative culture models of the lung, which
is a particularly challenging tissue to recreate in vitro. This study used magnetic levitation in conjunction with
magnetic nanoparticles as a means of creating an organized three-dimensional (3D) coculture of the bronchiole
that sequentially layers cells in a manner similar to native tissue architecture. The 3D coculture model was
assembled from four human cell types in the bronchiole: endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells (SMCs), fibroblasts,
and epithelial cells (EpiCs). This study represents the first effort to combine these particular cell types into
an organized bronchiole coculture. These cell layers were first cultured in 3D by magnetic levitation, and then
manipulated into contact with a custom-made magnetic pen, and again cultured for 48 h. Hematoxylin and eosin
staining of the resulting coculture showed four distinct layers within the 3D coculture. Immunohistochemistry
confirmed the phenotype of each of the four cell types and showed organized extracellular matrix formation,
particularly, with collagen type I. Positive stains for CD31, von Willebrand factor, smooth muscle a-actin,
vimentin, and fibronectin demonstrate the maintenance of the phenotype for endothelial cells, SMCs, and
fibroblasts. Positive stains for mucin-5AC, cytokeratin, and E-cadherin after 7 days with and without 1% fetal
bovine serum showed that EpiCs maintained the phenotype and function. This study validates magnetic levitation
as a method for the rapid creation of organized 3D cocultures that maintain the phenotype and induce
extracellular matrix formation

Effectiveness of integrated disease management for primary care chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients: results of cluster randomised trial.
__Objective__ To investigate the long term effectiveness of integrated disease management delivered in primary care on quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) compared with usual care.
__Design__ 24 month, multicentre, pragmatic cluster randomised controlled trial
__Setting__ 40 general practices in the western part of the Netherlands
__Participants__ Patients with COPD according to GOLD (Global Initiative for COPD) criteria. Exclusion criteria were terminal illness, cognitive impairment, alcohol or drug misuse, and inability to fill in Dutch questionnaires. Practices were included if they were willing to create a multidisciplinary COPD team.
__Intervention__ General practitioners, practice nurses, and specialised physiotherapists in the intervention group received a two day training course on incorporating integrated disease management in practice, including early recognition of exacerbations and self management, smoking cessation, physiotherapeutic reactivation, optimal diagnosis, and drug adherence.
