    Amplitude expansion of the binary phase field crystal model

    Amplitude representations of a binary phase field crystal model are developed for a two dimensional triangular lattice and three dimensional BCC and FCC crystal structures. The relationship between these amplitude equations and the standard phase field models for binary alloy solidification with elasticity are derived, providing an explicit connection between phase field crystal and phase field models. Sample simulations of solute migration at grain boundaries, eutectic solidification and quantum dot formation on nano-membranes are also presented.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Assessing Descriptive Substance in Free-Text Collection-Level Metadata

    Collection-level metadata has the potential to provide important information about the features and purpose of individual collections. This paper reports on a content analysis of collection records in an aggregation of cultural heritage collections. The findings show that the free-text Description field often provides more accurate and complete representation of subjects and object types than the specified fields. Properties such as importance, uniqueness, comprehensiveness, provenance, and creator are articulated, as well as other vital contextual information about the intentions of a collector and the value of a collection, as a whole, for scholarly users.     Strategy for designing broadband epsilon-near-zero metamaterial with loss compensation by gain media

    A strategy is proposed to design the broadband gain-doped epsilon-near-zero (GENZ) metamaterial. Based on the Milton representation of effective permittivity, the strategy starts in a dimensionless spectral space, where the effective permittivity of GENZ metamaterial is simply determined by a pole-zero structure corresponding to the operating frequency range. The physical structure of GENZ metamaterial is retrieved from the pole-zero structure via a tractable inverse problem. The strategy is of great advantage in practical applications and also theoretically reveals the cancellation mechanism dominating the broadband near-zero permittivity phenomenon in the spectral space

    No person is in a position to do his best work unless responsibility is delegated to him with the freedom of initiative and with the necessary authority. In developing the soundness of an organization it has been found very helpful to have each individual clearly understand the limits of his authority. Services rendered by each employee are not readily evaluated unless these limits are specifically defined. Clerks, teachers, supervisors, and principals must understand the relationships which the organization intends shall exist among them and with the school system as a whole. The association of the professional staff in a public school system should create an environment in which improvement in the service and in the production is paralleled by a corresponding growth and development in the effectiveness of the individuals engaged in the work. The writer assumes that the administration of an educational enterprise seeks, through organization, to combine in the most effective and economical manner the efforts of the persons associated in carrying on the work, to assure a maximum return from the machinery, materials, and plant facilities provided, and to plan for the most economical use of the funds made available. Good management has its basis in organization and when this is properly conceived and operated, the most satisfactory returns o from hitman efforts are made possible. Every plan of organization for the improvement of instruction which separates from the main body of pupils in any one educational unit small groups requiring special treatment brings into existence new administrative problems. To operate each of the main administrative units established in a school system as a coordinated whole, along with the large number of associated activities which are auxiliaries to the work of instruction, requires careful planning and a detailed classification of the functions to be performed, and conceiving that ail endeavors that tend to improve the services which high schools are rendering are concomitants of organization and administration

    Evolution of a localized thermal explosion in a reactive gas

    Experimental observations of ignition in premixed gaseous reactants indicate that perfectly homogeneous initiation is practically unrealizable. Instead, combustion first sets in, as a rule, at small, discrete sites where inherent inhomogeneities cause chemical activity to proceed preferentially and lead to localized explosions. Combustion waves propagating away from these hot spots or reaction centers eventually envelop the remaining bulk. This study examines the spatial structure and temporal evolution of a hot spot for a model involving Arrhenius kinetics. The hot spot, characterized by peaks in pressure and temperature with little diminution in local density, is shown to have one of two possible self-similar structures. The analysis employs a combination of asymptotics and numerics, and terminates when pressure and temperature in the explosion have peaked

    What's behind GM food trade disputes?

    Published online by Cambridge University Press 30 Sep 2005Over the past decade, the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) have implemented widely divergent regulatory systems to govern the production and consumption of genetically modified (GM) agricultural crops. In the US, many GM varieties have been commercially produced and marketed, while in the EU few varieties have been approved: a de facto moratorium limited EU production, import and domestic sale of most GM crops from late 1998 to April 2004, and since then strict labelling regulations and a slow approval process are having a similar effect. The EU policies have substantially altered trade flows and led in September 2003 to the WTO establishing a WTO Dispute Settlement panel to test the legality of European policy towards imports of GM foods. This paper seeks to better understand the economic forces behind the different regulatory approaches of the US and the EU. It uses a model of the global economy (GTAP) to examine empirically how GM biotechnology adoption would affect the economic welfare of both adopting and non-adopting countries in the absence of alternative policy responses to this technology, and in their presence. These results go beyond earlier empirical studies to indicate effects on real incomes of farm households, and suggest the EU moratorium on GM imports helps EU farmers even though it requires them to forego the productivity boost they could receive from the new GM biotechnology.Lee Ann Jackson and Kym Anderso

    Resonance energy transfer from a fluorescent dye molecule to plasmon and electron-hole excitations of a metal nanoparticle

    We study the distance dependence of the rate of electronic excitation energy transfer from a dye molecule to a metal nanoparticle. Using the spherical jellium model, we evaluate the rates corresponding to the excitation of l = 1, 2, and 3 modes of the nanoparticle. Our calculation takes into account both the electron-hole pair and the plasmon excitations of the nanoparticle. The rate follows conventional R^-6 dependence at large distances while small deviations from this behavior are observed at shorter distances. Within the framework of the jellium model, it is not possible to attribute the experimentally observed d^-4 dependence of the rate to energy transfer to plasmons or e-h pair excitations.Comment: 4 figure
