The promised city: openness and immigration in the making of a world metropolis
This article was the keynote address for a conference organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in April 2005, "Urban Dynamics in New York City." The goal of the conference was threefold: to examine the historical transformations of the engine-of-growth industries in New York and distill the main determinants of the city's historical dominance as well as the challenges to its continued success; to study the nature and evolution of immigration flows into New York; and to analyze recent trends in a range of socioeconomic outcomes, both for the general population and recent immigrants more specifically.Economic conditions - New York (N.Y.) ; Federal Reserve District, 2nd ; Immigrants
Um estadista na academia: Joaquim Nabuco na Universidade de Yale
A study of the academic discourses of Joaquim Nabuco, Brazils ambassador in Washington, D.C., at Yale and five more universities from 1908-1909. Nabuco returns to CamĂ”es as the example of great love for a language and a culture, nobly represented by Brazil. Nabuco compares the two great nations as examples for the then current politics of pan-americanism.
Differences in Dolphin Mortality Rates in Night and Day Sets for the U.S. Eastern Tropical Pacific Tuna Purse Seine Fishery
Because dolphins sometimes travel with yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP), purse seiners use the dolphins to locate and capture tuna schools. During the process of setting the purse seine nets, dolphins often become entangled and drown before they can be released. Data for the U.S. purse seine fleet in the ETP during 1979-88 show that dolphin mortality rates in sets made during the night are higher than mortality rates in sets made during the day. Even with efforts to reduce nightset mortality rates through the use of high intensity floodlights, night set mortality rates remain higher. The data are also used to simulate a regulation on the fishery aimed at eliminating night sets and show that dolphin mortality rates would decrease
The development and appraisal of a linear program for the teaching of complex numbers
After a brief review of the development of Programmed Learning the work reviews some techniques for producing linear programmes. The development of the linear programme for teaching the manipulation of complex numbers, and its preliminary trial in 1965 are described. The examination of the errors and subsequent modifications to the programmes are also shown. In 1966 the programme was administered to 33 mature students (Mean age 38) in a College of Education, who were compared with another group of 12 in the same college. This latter group had been taught the same material in a conventional way. No significant differences were found in post test scores or times needed to complete the work by either method. Some other correlations are investigated. The programme teaches successfully (Mean Gain + 72%), and methods of improving its performance for poorer students are discussed. A loop branching method is also suggested as an alternative way of helping less able students
Preferential Resource Delivery Via Web Proxy or Web Browser
The subject disclosure relates to prioritizing the loading of files referenced by the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) of a webpage, so that the time required to load the webpage is reduced, for example, as perceived by an end user. The HTML for a webpage can be parsed to identify what types of resources are referenced (e.g., a cascading style sheets (CSS) file, image files, JavaScript), and the bandwidth associated with downloading the resources can be assessed. Based on requested resources and bandwidth, the system can prioritize the loading of resources, in order to load portions of the webpage quickly so that the end user perceives an improved loading time
PROVIDING RATINGS BASED ON WAIT-TIME FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE
A method for providing rank weighting based on wait-time for customer service in various places using software in a system is disclosed. The software application shows information of wait-time with a âcurrent waitâ indicator that gives an estimate based on many factors including geolocation, fine-grained geolocation, number of people in line to check-in/out, speed of service, etc. The advantages of using the method include time saving by selecting a restaurant or service provider that currently provides faster service, in addition to other factors
