Energy radiated from a fluctuating selfdual string
We compute the energy that is radiated from a fluctuating selfdual string in
the large limit of theory using the AdS-CFT correspondence. We
find that the radiated energy is given by a non-local expression integrated
over the string world-sheet. We also make the corresponding computation for a
charged string in six-dimensional classical electrodynamics, thereby
generalizing the Larmor formula for the radiated energy from an accelerated

Evidence for an NO-rebound, mechanism for production of N2O from nitrite by the copper-containing nitrite reductase from Achromobacter cycloclastes
AbstractReduction of NO−2 by the Cu-containing nitrite reductase from Achromobacter cycloclastes produces NO as the primary product initially, but as NO accumulates, NO production levels-off and N2O production becomes significant. Reaction of the enzyme with NO−2 in the presence of NO increases the amount of N2O product significantly, while trapping the NO product as nitrosylhemoglobin or rapid, removal of NO by sparging results in no detectable N2O production. Reaction of the enzyme with 15NO−2 in the presence of 14NO results in rapid formation of the mixed isotope product (14N, 15N)O in ca. 45% yield. In contrast, the presence or absence of NO has no effect on N2O production by a prototypical heme cd1-containing nitrite reductase. These results are consistent with formation of a labile Cu+−NO+ species in the copper enzyme, which normally decomposes to NO. Production of N2O requires that the released NO must rebind to the enzyme to combine with a second NO−2 or a species derived therefrom
Apparent Superluminal Behavior
The apparent superluminal propagation of electromagnetic signals seen in
recent experiments is shown to be the result of simple and robust properties of
relativistic field equations. Although the wave front of a signal passing
through a classically forbidden region can never move faster than light, an
attenuated replica of the signal is reproduced ``instantaneously'' on the other
side of the barrier. The reconstructed signal, causally connected to the
forerunner rather than the bulk of the input signal, appears to move through

We present results of applying low coherence interferometry to gallery paintings. Infrared low coherence interferometry is capable of non-destructive examination of paintings in 3D, which shows not only the structure of the varnish layer but also the paint layers
Acetylcholinesterase activity measurement and clinical features of delirium
Aims: Cholinergic deficiency is commonly implicated in the pathophysiology of delirium. We aimed to investigate the relationship between directly measured serum AChE activity and (1) clinical features of delirium and (2) outcomes, among older hospital patients with delirium.
Methods: Hospitalized patients with delirium were recruited and delirium motor subtype, severity and duration of delirium were measured. Serum AChE activity was measured using a colorimetric assay.
Results: The mean AChE activity for the whole sample was 2.46 μmol/μml/min (SD 1.75). Higher AChE activity was associated with increased likelihood of hypoactive delirium rather than the hyperactive or mixed subtype (OR 1.98, CI 1.10-3.59).
Conclusion: Higher AChE activity was associated with hypoactive delirium, but did not predict outcomes. Simple enhancement of cholinergic neurotransmission may not be sufficient to treat deliriu
The algebra of adjacency patterns: Rees matrix semigroups with reversion
We establish a surprisingly close relationship between universal Horn classes
of directed graphs and varieties generated by so-called adjacency semigroups
which are Rees matrix semigroups over the trivial group with the unary
operation of reversion. In particular, the lattice of subvarieties of the
variety generated by adjacency semigroups that are regular unary semigroups is
essentially the same as the lattice of universal Horn classes of reflexive
directed graphs. A number of examples follow, including a limit variety of
regular unary semigroups and finite unary semigroups with NP-hard variety

High-pressure Raman study of L-alanine crystal
Pressure-dependent Raman scattering studies in the range 0.0 -- 32 kbar were
carried out in L-alanine in order to investigate its external mode phonon
spectra in relation to the phase transitions in the crystal. A careful analysis
of the spectra shows that the low-energy Raman modes exhibit variation both in
frequency and in intensity and between 26 and 28 kbar it is observed a
splitting of a external mode, indicating that the D_2 normal phase undergoes a

Automatic Abstraction for Congruences
One approach to verifying bit-twiddling algorithms is to derive invariants between the bits that constitute the variables of a program. Such invariants can often be described with systems of congruences where in each equation , (unknown variable m)\vec{c}\vec{x}$ is a vector of propositional variables (bits). Because of the low-level nature of these invariants and the large number of bits that are involved, it is important that the transfer functions can be derived automatically. We address this problem, showing how an analysis for bit-level congruence relationships can be decoupled into two parts: (1) a SAT-based abstraction (compilation) step which can be automated, and (2) an interpretation step that requires no SAT-solving. We exploit triangular matrix forms to derive transfer functions efficiently, even in the presence of large numbers of bits. Finally we propose program transformations that improve the analysis results
Surface and capillary transitions in an associating binary mixture model
We investigate the phase diagram of a two-component associating fluid mixture
in the presence of selectively adsorbing substrates. The mixture is
characterized by a bulk phase diagram which displays peculiar features such as
closed loops of immiscibility. The presence of the substrates may interfere the
physical mechanism involved in the appearance of these phase diagrams, leading
to an enhanced tendency to phase separate below the lower critical solution
point. Three different cases are considered: a planar solid surface in contact
with a bulk fluid, while the other two represent two models of porous systems,
namely a slit and an array on infinitely long parallel cylinders. We confirm
that surface transitions, as well as capillary transitions for a large
area/volume ratio, are stabilized in the one-phase region. Applicability of our

Holographic Coulomb branch vevs
We compute holographically the vevs of all chiral primary operators for
supergravity solutions corresponding to the Coulomb branch of N=4 SYM and find
exact agreement with the corresponding field theory computation. Using the
dictionary between 10d geometries and field theory developed to extract these
vevs, we propose a gravity dual of a half supersymmetric deformation of N=4 SYM
