Energy correlators on tracks:Resummation and non-perturbative effects

    Get PDF
Energy correlators measured inside high-energy jets at hadron colliders have recently been demonstrated to provide a new window into both perturbative and non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. A number of the most interesting features of these correlators, namely their universal scaling behavior and the ability to image the confinement transition, require precise angular resolution, necessitating the use of tracking information in experimental measurements. Theoretically, tracking information can be incorporated into the energy correlators using track functions, which are non-perturbative functions describing the fragmentation of quarks and gluons into charged hadrons. In this paper, we apply our recently developed track function formalism to energy correlators, and study in detail the interplay of track functions with perturbative resummation and non-perturbative power corrections. We provide resummed results for the energy correlators at collinear next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy and compare with parton shower Monte Carlo simulations. For the two-point correlator the use of tracking has a minimal effect throughout the entire distribution, but it has a significant effect for higher point correlators. Our results are crucial for the theoretical interpretation of recent experimental measurements of the energy-energy correlators.</p

    Get PDF

A COMPARISON BETWEEN SILAGE, STOVER AND RIPE MAIZE PLANTSMaize silage, stover and ripe maue plants wole conlpared with one another in respect to dry matter yield and dry matter losses. These feeds were also used in metabolism and production studies. Whereas 8,% of the original harvested dry matter was lost in the silo, the comparable field loses for stover amounted to 13,33/o anC for ripe plants to 34.9ft. No remarkable differences in chemical composition were found between the original plant matter, the silage, the stover and the mature plants. In metabolism studies with sheep, the lowest dry matter intake was obtained with silage, whilst the highest intake was obtained on stover. The highest digestible energy values were, however, recorded on silage feeding. The production study with oxen showed that the feeding of silage proved to be more efficient with regard to increase in body mass, dressing percentage, carcass mas and total income

Stimulating undergraduate medical students’ scientific careers: the Groningen concept

For many medical students entering medical school, becoming a physician-scientist is not the first career opportunity they depicted for themselves. Most students start medical school with the idea of becoming a professional medical doctor using scientific knowledge in direct patient care and in the development of protocols and guidelines. With the rapid growth of scientific knowledge and the fast development of new medical techniques and treatment options, the need for more physician-scientists is more urging then ever.[...

International Health Electives:defining learning outcomes for a unique experience

    Get PDF
Background: An International Health Elective (IHE) can be a unique learning experience for students. However, it has proven difficult to clearly define learning outcomes that capture the complexity of an IHE and are aligned with future professional performance. This study aimed to further define learning outcomes for IHEs in low- to middle-income countries (LMIC) from a student perspective. Methods: We conducted a deductive analysis of pre-departure and post-elective reflective reports of fifth-year medical students who participated in an IHE as part of their program. This provided possible learning objectives that were further explored in semi-structured individual interviews with medical students who had recently returned from an IHE. Results: We analyzed 33 reports of students participating in an IHE from 2017–2019 and held 19 interviews. Thematic analysis revealed 9 themes: developing intercultural competence, developing appreciation for differences in health care delivery systems, understanding international health, understanding the global burden of disease, developing a career perspective, developing clinical skills in resource low settings, becoming cost conscious, developing social responsibility and self-actualization. Conclusions: We identified 9 learning outcomes that are directly and indirectly related to clinical practice. They add to the on-going discourse on the benefits of IHEs. These outcomes can be further developed by investigating the perspectives of home and host supervisors and educationalists, while taking the local context into account. Follow-up studies can evaluate to what extend these outcomes are achieve during an IHE.</p
