    Ginzburg-Landau equations for layered p-wave superconductors

    Based on Gor'kov's theory of weakly coupled superconductors, the Ginzburg-Landau equations for layered p-wave superconductors are derived, the order parameter of which is assumed to belong to a nontrivial two-dimensional representation. This calculation allows us to microscopically determine the expansion coefficients of the Ginzburg-Landau free-energy functional with respect to the order parameter. The main feature of the vortex solution is briefly discussed. It is found that the extreme condition for the nonaxisymmetric singly quantized vortices is not ensured in the weak-coupling limit. If the discrete crystal symmetry is included, the axisymmetric singly quantized vortex is stable. In addition, the upper critical field is also solely determined within the weak-coupling framework.published_or_final_versio

    Identification of the initial molecular changes in response to circulating angiogenic cells-mediated therapy in critical limb ischemia

    BackgroundCritical limb ischemia (CLI) constitutes the most aggressive form of peripheral arterial occlusive disease, characterized by the blockade of arteries supplying blood to the lower extremities, significantly diminishing oxygen and nutrient supply. CLI patients usually undergo amputation of fingers, feet, or extremities, with a high risk of mortality due to associated comorbidities.Circulating angiogenic cells (CACs), also known as early endothelial progenitor cells, constitute promising candidates for cell therapy in CLI due to their assigned vascular regenerative properties. Preclinical and clinical assays with CACs have shown promising results. A better understanding of how these cells participate in vascular regeneration would significantly help to potentiate their role in revascularization.Herein, we analyzed the initial molecular mechanisms triggered by human CACs after being administered to a murine model of CLI, in order to understand how these cells promote angiogenesis within the ischemic tissues.MethodsBalb-c nude mice (n:24) were distributed in four different groups: healthy controls (C, n:4), shams (SH, n:4), and ischemic mice (after femoral ligation) that received either 50 mu l physiological serum (SC, n:8) or 5x10(5) human CACs (SE, n:8). Ischemic mice were sacrificed on days 2 and 4 (n:4/group/day), and immunohistochemistry assays and qPCR amplification of Alu-human-specific sequences were carried out for cell detection and vascular density measurements. Additionally, a label-free MS-based quantitative approach was performed to identify protein changes related.ResultsAdministration of CACs induced in the ischemic tissues an increase in the number of blood vessels as well as the diameter size compared to ischemic, non-treated mice, although the number of CACs decreased within time. The initial protein changes taking place in response to ischemia and more importantly, right after administration of CACs to CLI mice, are shown.ConclusionsOur results indicate that CACs migrate to the injured area; moreover, they trigger protein changes correlated with cell migration, cell death, angiogenesis, and arteriogenesis in the host.     Optimal preparation of high-entropy boride-silicon carbide ceramics

    High-entropy boride-silicon carbide (HEB-SiC) ceramics were fabricated using boride-based powders prepared from borothermal and boro/carbothermal reduction methods. The effects of processing routes (borothermal reduction and boro/carbothermal reduction) on the HEB powders were examined. HEB-SiC ceramics with > 98% theoretical density were prepared by spark plasma sintering at 2000 °C. It was demonstrated that the addition of SiC led to slight coarsening of the microstructure. The HEB-SiC ceramics prepared from boro/carbothermal reduction powders showed a fine-grained microstructure and higher Vickers’ hardness but lower fracture toughness value as compared with the same composition prepared from borothermal reduction powders. These results indicated that the selection of the powder processing method and the addition of SiC phase could contribute to the optimal preparation of high-entropy boride-based ceramics

    Influence of Ketotifen, Cromolyn Sodium, and Compound 48/80 on the survival rates after intestinal ischemia reperfusion injury in rats

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mast cells were associated with intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury, the study was to observe the influence of Ketotifen, Cromolyn Sdium(CS), and Compound 48/80(CP) on the survival rates on the third day after intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>120 healthy Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, Sham-operated group (group S), model group (group M), group K, group C and group CP. Intestinal damage was triggered by clamping the superior mesenteric artery for 75 minutes, group K, C, and CP were treated with kotifen 1 mg·kg<sup>-1</sup>, CS 50 mg·kg<sup>-1</sup>, and CP 0.75 mg·kg<sup>-1 </sup>i.v. at 5 min before reperfusion and once daily for three days following reperfusion respectively. Survival rate in each group was recorded during the three days after reperfusion. All the surviving rats were killed for determining the concentration of serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase(AST), glutamic pyruvic transaminase(ALT), the ratio of AST compare ALT(S/L), total protein(TP), albumin(ALB), globulin(GLB), the ratio of ALB compare GLB(A/G), phosphocreatine kinase(CK), lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), urea nitrogen(BUN) and creatinine(CRE) at the 3<sup>rd </sup>day after reperfusion. And ultrastructure of IMMC, Chiu's score, lung histology, IMMC counts, the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 of the small intestine were detected at the same time.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury reduced the survival rate. The concentrations of TP, ALB and level of IL-10 in intestine in group M decreased significantly while the concentrations of S/L, LDH and the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in intestine increased significantly compared with group S (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Treatment with Ketotifen and CS increased the survival rate compared with group M (<it>P </it>< 0.05), attenuated the down-regulation or up-regulation of the above index (<it>P </it>< 0.05). Treatment with CP decreased the survival rate on the 3<sup>rd </sup>day after reperfusion compared with group M(<it>P </it>< 0.05). Group K and C had better morphology in IMMC in the small intestine and in the lungs than in group M and CP, although the Chiu's score and IMMC counts remained the same in the five groups(<it>P </it>> 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Mast cell inhibition after ischemia prior to reperfusion and following reperfusion may decrease the multi-organ injury induced by intestine ischemia reperfusion, and increase the survival rates.</p

    Discovery of a novel genetic susceptibility locus on X chromosome for systemic lupus erythematosus

    INTRODUCTION: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease affecting predominantly females. To discover additional genetic risk variants for SLE on the X chromosome, we performed a follow-up study of our previously published genome-wide association study (GWAS) data set in this study. METHODS: Twelve single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within novel or unpublished loci with P-value < 1.00 × 10(-02) were selected for genotype with a total of 2,442 cases and 2,798 controls(including 1,156 cases and 2,330 controls from central China, 1,012 cases and 335 controls from southern China and 274 cases and 133 controls from northern China) using Sequenom Massarry system. Associaton analyses were performed using logistic regression with sample region as a covariate through PLINK 1.07 software. RESULTS: Combined analysis in discovery and central validation dataset discovered a novel locus rs5914778 within LINC01420 associated with SLE at genome-wide significance (P = 1.00 × 10(-08); odds ratio (OR) = 1.32). We also confirmed rs5914778 in the southern Chinese sample cohort (P = 5.31 × 10(-05); OR = 1.51), and meta-analysis of the samples from the discovery, central and southern validations regions provided robust evidence for the association of rs5914778 (P = 5.26 × 10(-12); OR = 1.35). However, this SNP did not show association with SLE in the northern sample (P = 0.33). Further analysis represent the association of northern was significantly heterogeneous compared to central and southern respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our study increases the number of established susceptibility loci for SLE in Han Chinese population and has further demonstrated the important role of X-linked genetic risk variants in the pathogenesis of SLE in Chinese Han population.published_or_final_versio

    Tin Oxide Nanorod Array-Based Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Biosensor

    SnO2 nanorod array grown directly on alloy substrate has been employed as the working electrode of H2O2 biosensor. Single-crystalline SnO2 nanorods provide not only low isoelectric point and enough void spaces for facile horseradish peroxidase (HRP) immobilization but also numerous conductive channels for electron transport to and from current collector; thus, leading to direct electrochemistry of HRP. The nanorod array-based biosensor demonstrates high H2O2 sensing performance in terms of excellent sensitivity (379 μA mM−1 cm−2), low detection limit (0.2 μM) and high selectivity with the apparent Michaelis–Menten constant estimated to be as small as 33.9 μM. Our work further demonstrates the advantages of ordered array architecture in electrochemical device application and sheds light on the construction of other high-performance enzymatic biosensors

    Identification of Piwil2-Like (PL2L) Proteins that Promote Tumorigenesis

    PIWIL2, a member of PIWI/AGO gene family, is expressed in the germline stem cells (GSCs) of testis for gametogenesis but not in adult somatic and stem cells. It has been implicated to play an important role in tumor development. We have previously reported that precancerous stem cells (pCSCs) constitutively express Piwil2 transcripts to promote their proliferation. Here we show that these transcripts de facto represent Piwil2-like (PL2L) proteins. We have identified several PL2L proteins including PL2L80, PL2L60, PL2L50 and PL2L40, using combined methods of Gene-Exon-Mapping Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (GEM RT-PCR), bioinformatics and a group of novel monoclonal antibodies. Among them, PL2L60 rather than Piwil2 and other PL2L proteins is predominantly expressed in various types of human and mouse tumor cells. It promotes tumor cell survival and proliferation in vitro through up-regulation of Stat3 and Bcl2 gene expressions, the cell cycle entry from G0/1 into S-phase, and the nuclear expression of NF-κB, which contribute to the tumorigenicity of tumor cells in vivo. Consistently, PL2L proteins rather than Piwil2 are predominantly expressed in the cytoplasm or cytoplasm and nucleus of euchromatin-enriched tumor cells in human primary and metastatic cancers, such as breast and cervical cancers. Moreover, nuclear PL2L proteins are always co-expressed with nuclear NF-κB. These results reveal that PL2L60 can coordinate with NF-κB to promote tumorigenesis and might mediate a common pathway for tumor development without tissue restriction. The identification of PL2L proteins provides a novel insight into the mechanisms of cancer development as well as a novel bridge linking cancer diagnostics and anticancer drug development

    Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay

    The decay channel ψ′→π+π−J/ψ(J/ψ→γppˉ)\psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) is studied using a sample of 1.06×1081.06\times 10^8 ψ′\psi^\prime events collected by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is observed in the ppˉp\bar{p} invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit with an SS-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of M=1861−13+6(stat)−26+7(syst)MeV/c2M=1861^{+6}_{-13} {\rm (stat)}^{+7}_{-26} {\rm (syst)} {\rm MeV/}c^2 and a narrow width that is Γ<38MeV/c2\Gamma<38 {\rm MeV/}c^2 at the 90% confidence level. These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width values do not match with those of any known meson resonance.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Chinese Physics

    Polymorphisms on SSC15q21-q26 Containing QTL for reproduction in Swine and its association with litter size

    Several quantitative trait loci (QTL) for important reproductive traits (ovulation rate) have been identified on the porcine chromosome 15 (SSC15). To assist in the selection of positional candidate swine genes for these QTL on SSC15, twenty-one genes had already been assigned to SSC15 in a previous study in our lab, by using the radiation hybrid panel IMpRH. Further polymorphism studies were carried out on these positional candidate genes with four breeds of pigs (Duroc, Erhualian, Dahuabai and Landrace) harboring significant differences in reproduction traits. A total of nineteen polymorphisms were found in 21 genes. Among these, seven in six genes were used for association studies, whereby NRP2 polymorphism was found to be significantly (p < 0.05) associated with litter-size traits. NRP2 might be a candidate gene for pig-litter size based on its chromosome location (Du et al., 2006), significant association with litter-size traits and relationships with Sema and the VEGF super families
