    The game transfer phenomena scale: an instrument for investigating the nonvolitional effects of video game playing

    A variety of instruments have been developed to assess different dimensions of playing videogames and its effects on cognitions, affect, and behaviors. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the Game Transfer Phenomena Scale (GTPS) that assesses non-volitional phenomena experienced after playing videogames (i.e., altered perceptions, automatic mental processes, and involuntary behaviors). A total of 1,736 gamers participated in an online survey used as the basis for the analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to confirm the factorial structure of the GTPS. The five-factor structure using the 20 indicators based on the analysis of gamers’ self-reports fitted the data well. Population cross-validity was also achieved and the positive associations between the session length and overall scores indicate the GTPS warranted criterion-related validity. Although the understanding of GTP is still in its infancy, the GTPS appears to be a valid and reliable instrument for assessing non-volitional gaming-related phenomena. The GTPS can be used for understanding the phenomenology of post-effects of playing videogames

    A Functional Screen Provides Evidence for a Conserved, Regulatory, Juxtamembrane Phosphorylation Site in Guanylyl Cyclase A and B

    Kinase homology domain (KHD) phosphorylation is required for activation of guanylyl cyclase (GC)-A and -B. Phosphopeptide mapping identified multiple phosphorylation sites in GC-A and GC-B, but these approaches have difficulty identifying sites in poorly detected peptides. Here, a functional screen was conducted to identify novel sites. Conserved serines or threonines in the KHDs of phosphorylated receptor GCs were mutated to alanine and tested for reduced hormone to detergent activity ratios. Mutation of Ser-489 in GC-B to alanine but not glutamate reduced the activity ratio to 60% of wild type (WT) levels. Similar results were observed with Ser-473, the homologous site in GC-A. Receptors containing glutamates for previously identified phosphorylation sites (GC-A-6E and GC-B-6E) were activated to ∼20% of WT levels but the additional glutamate substitution for S473 or S489 increased activity to near WT levels. Substrate-velocity assays indicated that GC-B-WT-S489E and GC-B-6E-S489E had lower Km values and that WT-GC-B-S489A, GC-B-6E and GC-B-6E-S489A had higher Km values than WT-GC-B. Homologous desensitization was enhanced when GC-A contained the S473E substitution, and GC-B-6E-S489E was resistant to inhibition by a calcium elevating treatment or protein kinase C activation – processes that dephosphorylate GC-B. Mass spectrometric detection of a synthetic phospho-Ser-473 containing peptide was 200–1300-fold less sensitive than other phosphorylated peptides and neither mass spectrometric nor 32PO4 co-migration studies detected phospho-Ser-473 or phospho-Ser-489 in cells. We conclude that Ser-473 and Ser-489 are Km-regulating phosphorylation sites that are difficult to detect using current methods

    Comparative analysis of the effects of tantalum doping and annealing on atomic layer deposited (Ta2O5)(x)(Al2O3)(1-x) as potential gate dielectrics for GaN/AlxGa1-xN/GaN high electron mobility transistors

    This paper describes a method to optimally combine wide band gap Al2O3 with high dielectric constant (high-κ) Ta2O5 for gate dielectric applications. (Ta2O5)x(Al2O3)1−x thin films deposited by thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) on GaN-capped AlxGa1−xN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) structures have been studied as a function of the Ta2O5 molar fraction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that the bandgap of the oxide films linearly decreases from 6.5 eV for pure Al2O3 to 4.6 eV for pure Ta2O5. The dielectric constant calculated from capacitance-voltage measurements also increases linearly from 7.8 for Al2O3 up to 25.6 for Ta2O5. The effect of post-deposition annealing in N2 at 600 °C on the interfacial properties of undoped Al2O3 and Ta-doped (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 films grown on GaN-HEMTs has been investigated. These conditions are analogous to the conditions used for source/drain contact formation in gate-first HEMT technology. A reduction of the Ga-O to Ga-N bond ratios at the oxide/HEMT interfaces is observed after annealing, which is attributed to a reduction of interstitial oxygen-related defects. As a result, the conduction band offsets (CBOs) of the Al2O3/GaN-HEMT and (Ta2O5)0.16(Al2O3)0.84/GaN-HEMT samples increased by ∼1.1 eV to 2.8 eV and 2.6 eV, respectively, which is advantageous for n-type HEMTs. The results demonstrate that ALD of Ta-doped Al2O3 can be used to control the properties of the gate dielectric, allowing the κ-value to be increased, while still maintaining a sufficient CBO to the GaN-HEMT structure for low leakage currents.     Patient-Reported Outcome questionnaires for hip arthroscopy: a systematic review of the psychometric evidence

    Abstract Background Hip arthroscopies are often used in the treatment of intra-articular hip injuries. Patient-reported outcomes (PRO) are an important parameter in evaluating treatment. It is unclear which PRO questionnaires are specifically available for hip arthroscopy patients. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate which PRO questionnaires are valid and reliable in the evaluation of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy. Methods A search was conducted in Pubmed, Medline, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Pedro, EMBASE and Web of Science from 1931 to October 2010. Studies assessing the quality of PRO questionnaires in the evaluation of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy were included. The quality of the questionnaires was evaluated by the psychometric properties of the outcome measures. The quality of the articles investigating the questionnaires was assessed by the COSMIN list. Results Five articles identified three questionnaires; the Modified Harris Hip Score (MHHS), the Nonarthritic Hip Score (NAHS) and the Hip Outcome Score (HOS). The NAHS scored best on the content validity, whereas the HOS scored best on agreement, internal consistency, reliability and responsiveness. The quality of the articles describing the HOS scored highest. The NAHS is the best quality questionnaire. The articles describing the HOS are the best quality articles. Conclusions This systematic review shows that there is no conclusive evidence for the use of a single patient-reported outcome questionnaire in the evaluation of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy. Based on available psychometric evidence we recommend using a combination of the NAHS and the HOS for patients undergoing hip arthroscopy.</p

    Bilayer manganites: polarons in the midst of a metallic breakdown

    The exact nature of the low temperature electronic phase of the manganite materials family, and hence the origin of their colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) effect, is still under heavy debate. By combining new photoemission and tunneling data, we show that in La{2-2x}Sr{1+2x}Mn2O7 the polaronic degrees of freedom win out across the CMR region of the phase diagram. This means that the generic ground state is that of a system in which strong electron-lattice interactions result in vanishing coherent quasi-particle spectral weight at the Fermi level for all locations in k-space. The incoherence of the charge carriers offers a unifying explanation for the anomalous charge-carrier dynamics seen in transport, optics and electron spectroscopic data.     Effects of isoflavones (soy phyto-estrogens) on serum lipids: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

    OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of isoflavones (soy phyto-estrogens) on serum total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and triglyceride (TG). METHODS: We searched electronic databases and included randomized trials with isoflavones interventions in the forms of tablets, isolated soy protein or soy diets. Review Manager 4.2 was used to calculate the pooled risk differences with fixed effects model. RESULTS: Seventeen studies (21 comparisons) with 853 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. Isoflavones tablets had insignificant effects on serum TC, 0.01 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.17 to 0.18, heterogeneity p = 1.0); LDL, 0.00 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.14 to 0.15, heterogeneity p = 0.9); HDL, 0.01 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.05 to 0.06, heterogeneity p = 1.0); and triglyceride, 0.03 mmol/L (95% CI: -0.06 to 0.12, heterogeneity p = 0.9). Isoflavones interventions in the forms of isolated soy protein (ISP), soy diets or soy protein capsule were heterogeneous to combine. CONCLUSIONS: Isoflavones tablets, isolated or mixtures with up to 150 mg per day, seemed to have no overall statistical and clinical benefits on serum lipids. Isoflavones interventions in the forms of soy proteins may need further investigations to resolve whether synergistic effects are necessary with other soy components

    Reconstructing ‘the Alcoholic’: Recovering from Alcohol Addiction and the Stigma this Entails

    Public perception of alcohol addiction is frequently negative, whilst an important part of recovery is the construction of a positive sense of self. In order to explore how this might be achieved, we investigated how those who self-identify as in recovery from alcohol problems view themselves and their difficulties with alcohol and how they make sense of others’ responses to their addiction. Semi-structured interviews with six individuals who had been in recovery between 5 and 35 years and in contact with Alcoholics Anonymous were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The participants were acutely aware of stigmatising images of ‘alcoholics’ and described having struggled with a considerable dilemma in accepting this identity themselves. However, to some extent they were able to resist stigma by conceiving of an ‘aware alcoholic self’ which was divorced from their previously unaware self and formed the basis for a new more knowing and valued identity

    Comparison of atomic layer deposited Al2O3 and (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 gate dielectrics on the characteristics of GaN-capped AlGaN/GaN metal-oxide-semiconductor high electron mobility transistors

    The current research investigates the potential advantages of replacing Al2O3 with (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 as a higher dielectric constant (κ) gate dielectric for GaN-based metal-oxide-semiconductor high electron mobility transistors (MOS-HEMTs). The electrical characteristics of GaN-capped AlGaN/GaN MOS-HEMT devices with (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 as the gate dielectric are compared to devices with Al2O3 gate dielectric and devices without any gate dielectric (Schottky HEMTs). Compared to the Al2O3 MOS-HEMT, the (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 MOS-HEMT achieves a larger capacitance and a smaller absolute threshold voltage, together with a higher two-dimensional electron gas carrier concentration. This results in a superior improvement of the output characteristics with respect to the Schottky HEMT, with higher maximum and saturation drain current values observed from DC current-voltage measurements. Gate transfer measurements also show a higher transconductance for the (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 MOS-HEMT. Furthermore, from OFF-state measurements, the (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 MOS-HEMT shows a larger reduction of the gate leakage current in comparison to the Al2O3 MOS-HEMT. These results demonstrate that the increase in κ of (Ta2O5)0.12(Al2O3)0.88 compared with Al2O3 leads to enhanced device performance when the ternary phase is used as a gate dielectric in the GaN-based MOS-HEMT
