Smectic and columnar ordering in length-polydisperse fluids of parallel hard cylinders
We apply a recently proposed density functional for mixtures of parallel hard
cylinders, based on Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory, to study the effect
of length-polydispersity on the relative stability between the smectic and
columnar liquid crystal phases.To this purpose we derive from this functional
an expression for the direct correlation function and use it to perform a
bifurcation analysis. We compare the results with those obtained with a second
and a third virial approximation of this function. All three approximations
lead to the same conclusion: there is a terminal polydispersity beyond which
the smectic phase is less stable than the columnar phase. This result is in
agreement with previous Monte Carlo simulations conducted on a freely rotating
length-polydisperse hard spherocylinder fluid, although the theories always
overestimate the terminal polydispersity because the nematic-columnar phase
transition is first order and exhibits a wide coexistence gap. Both, the
fundamental-measure functional and the third virial approximation, predict a
metastable nematic-nematic demixing. Conversely, according to second virial
approximation this demixing might be stable at high values of the
polydispersity, something that is observed neither in simulations nor in
experiments. The results of the fundamental-measure functional are
quantitatively superior to those obtained from the other two approximations.
Thus this functional provides a promising route to map out the full phase

Evaluation of changes in T-wave alternans induced by 60-days of immobilization by head-down bed-rest
Long-term ecological changes in Mediterranean mountain lakes linked to recent climate change and Saharan dust deposition revealed by diatom analyses
Anthropogenic climate change and the recent increase of Saharan dust deposition has had substantial effects on Mediterranean alpine regions. We examined changes in diatom assemblage composition over the past ~180 years from high-resolution, dated sediment cores retrieved from six remote lakes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Southern Spain. In all lakes, changes in diatom composition began over a century ago, but were more pronounced after ~1970 CE, concurrent with trends in rising regional air temperature, declining precipitation, and increased Saharan dust deposition. Temperature was identified as the main predictor of diatom assemblage changes, whereas both Saharan dust deposition drivers, the Sahel precipitation index and the winter North Atlantic Oscillation, were secondary explanatory variables. Diatom compositional shifts are indicative of lake alkalinization (linked to heightened evapoconcentration and an increase in calcium-rich Saharan dust input) and reduced lake water turbulence (linked to lower water levels and reduced inflows to the lakes). Moreover, decreases in epiphytic diatom species were indicative of increasing aridity and the drying of catchment meadows. Our results support the conclusions of previous chlorophyll-a and cladoceran-based paleolimnological analyses of these same dated sedimentary records which show a regional-scale response to climate change and Saharan dust deposition in Sierra Nevada lakes and their catchments during the 20th century. However, diatom assemblages seem to respond to different atmospheric and climate-related effects than cladoceran assemblages and chlorophyll-a concentrations. The recent impact of climate change and atmospheric Saharan deposition on lake biota assemblages and water chemistry, as well as catchment water availability, will have important implications for the valuable ecosystem services that the Sierra Nevada provides
A double-edged sword: Residents' views on the health consequences of gentrification in Porto, Portugal
Gentrification is currently shaping the urban environment in important ways. It also contributes to shaping the health of the inhabitants of gentrifying cities, although it is still unclear how. Gentrification processes are often linked to different drivers and have specific local translations, further complicating the study of the relationship between gentrification and health. We investigated this relationship in Porto, Portugal, a southern European city undergoing rampant transnational gentrification. In order to study how gentrification impacts health from the point of view of that city's residents, we conducted a study using photovoice with a sample of participants recruited from a population-based cohort, which was divided into three different groups: one from gentrifying areas of Porto, another from deprived non-gentrifying areas, and the other from affluent areas. The thematic analysis of data generated six themes, each referring to a change, or a set of connected changes, related to gentrification: increasing floating population, lack of housing access and displacement, construction and rehabilitation, changing local commerce, loss of place, and broader socioeconomic change. According to the accounts from participants, these changes affect health in different ways, both beneficial and harmful. Participants also reflected on how to act on this issue. Rectification of electronic heat current by a hybrid thermal diode
We report the realization of an ultra-efficient low-temperature hybrid heat
current rectifier, thermal counterpart of the well-known electric diode. Our
design is based on a tunnel junction between two different elements: a normal
metal and a superconducting island. Electronic heat current asymmetry in the
structure arises from large mismatch between the thermal properties of these
two. We demonstrate experimentally temperature differences exceeding mK
between the forward and reverse thermal bias configurations. Our device offers
a remarkably large heat rectification ratio up to and allows its
prompt implementation in true solid-state thermal nanocircuits and
general-purpose electronic applications requiring energy harvesting or thermal

An additive subfamily of enlargements of a maximally monotone operator
We introduce a subfamily of additive enlargements of a maximally monotone
operator. Our definition is inspired by the early work of Simon Fitzpatrick.
These enlargements constitute a subfamily of the family of enlargements
introduced by Svaiter. When the operator under consideration is the
subdifferential of a convex lower semicontinuous proper function, we prove that
some members of the subfamily are smaller than the classical
-subdifferential enlargement widely used in convex analysis. We also
recover the epsilon-subdifferential within the subfamily. Since they are all
additive, the enlargements in our subfamily can be seen as structurally closer
to the -subdifferential enlargement
Plant communities of Italy. The vegetation prodrome
The Vegetation Prodrome of Italy was promoted in 2012 by the Italian "Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection", in collaboration with the "Italian Society of Botany", to provide a comprehensive and systematic catalogue and description of Italian plant communities. The Prodrome that is presented in this paper is the first full organic synthesis of the vegetation of Italy at the alliance syntaxonomic level. It fulfils several needs, the main one being a unified and comprehensive national framework that may make an important contribution to the definition of the European Vegetation Prodrome. Syntaxonomy, as well as taxonomy, is sometimes based on considerations that may in part diverge: several authors tend to favour models that are divisive or aggregative to a greater or lesser extent in terms of flora, biogeography and ecology. These different points of view stimulate the scientific debate and allow the adoption of a framework that is more widely supported. The Prodrome includes 75 classes, 2 subclasses, 175 orders, 6 suborders and 393 alliances. The classes were grouped into nine broad categories according to structural, physiognomic and synecological elements rather than to syntaxonomic criteria. The rank, full valid name, any synonymies and incorrect names are provided for each syntaxon. The short declaration highlights the physiognomy, synecology, syndynamics and distribution of the plant communities that belong to the syntaxon. The Prodrome of the Italian Vegetation is linked to the European Strategy for Biodiversity, the European Habitats Directive and the European Working Groups related to the ecosystems and their services. In addition to basic applications, the Prodrome can be used as a framework for scientific research related to the investigation of the relationships between plant communities and the environmental factors that influence their composition and distribution
Monitoring blood potassium concentration in hemodialysis patients by quantifying T-wave morphology dynamics.
We investigated the ability of time-warping-based ECG-derived markers of T-wave morphology changes in time ([Formula: see text]) and amplitude ([Formula: see text]), as well as their non-linear components ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]), and the heart rate corrected counterpart ([Formula: see text]), to monitor potassium concentration ([Formula: see text]) changes ([Formula: see text]) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). We compared the performance of the proposed time-warping markers, together with other previously proposed [Formula: see text] markers, such as T-wave width ([Formula: see text]) and T-wave slope-to-amplitude ratio ([Formula: see text]), when computed from standard ECG leads as well as from principal component analysis (PCA)-based leads. 48-hour ECG recordings and a set of hourly-collected blood samples from 29 ESRD-HD patients were acquired. Values of [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] were calculated by comparing the morphology of the mean warped T-waves (MWTWs) derived at each hour along the HD with that from a reference MWTW, measured at the end of the HD. From the same MWTWs [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] were also extracted. Similarly, [Formula: see text] was calculated as the difference between the [Formula: see text] values at each hour and the [Formula: see text] reference level at the end of the HD session. We found that [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] showed higher correlation coefficients with [Formula: see text] than [Formula: see text]-Spearman's ([Formula: see text]) and Pearson's (r)-and [Formula: see text]-Spearman's ([Formula: see text])-in both SL and PCA approaches being the intra-patient median [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in SL and [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in PCA respectively. Our findings would point at [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] as the most suitable surrogate of [Formula: see text], suggesting that they could be potentially useful for non-invasive monitoring of ESRD-HD patients in hospital, as well as in ambulatory settings. Therefore, the tracking of T-wave morphology variations by means of time-warping analysis could improve continuous and remote [Formula: see text] monitoring of ESRD-HD patients and flagging risk of [Formula: see text]-related cardiovascular events
Primary immune thrombocytopenia: Experience of a specialised clinic
Introduction: Although primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is rare in childhood, it is the most frequent cause of thrombocytopenia. There have been attempts to establish risk factors to predict the progression of the disease in order to optimise its management, which has changed in recent years due to, among other reasons, specialised care.
Material and methods: A retrospective, observational and analytical study was conducted on patients diagnosed with ITP over a 3-year period in a Paediatric Haematology specialist clinic.
Results: From the epidemiological, clinical and analytical point of view, the characteristics of this group are similar to others. Most of the patients (23/31, 74.2%) had ITP for less than 12 months, with there being no serious complications related to the disease or the treatment received. It was established that risk factors were related to being slowly evolving (lower event free survival (EFS)) with no statistical significance, female gender, age over 10 years, leukopenia absence of initial severe thrombocytopenia, and non-specialised care. The absence of a history of infection was significantly related to a lower EFS.
Conclusions: The epidemiological and analytical risk factors for a slowly evolving ITP are the same that described in the literature. Patients treated before the beginning of specialised care also had a lower EFS. These data seem to support the current recommendation that rare diseases should be managed in specialised units. Estimadores del retardo entre las series de QT y RR en registros ECG de prueba de esfuerzo: evaluación en simulación
La adaptación lenta del intervalo QT ante cambios abruptos de
la frecuencia cardiaca (FC) se ha identificado como un marcador
de riesgo de arritmias ventriculares. Sin embargo, estos cambios
abruptos no son fáciles de inducir en pacientes. Recientemente,
se ha propuesto un método para cuantificar este tiempo de
adaptación en electrocardiogramas (ECG) grabados durante
prueba de esfuerzo. Para ello se calcula el retardo entre la serie
real de QT y una serie estimada del QT instantáneo y sin memoria
que correspondería a la FC real en cada momento. En este
trabajo se evalúa este método en un entorno controlando usando
señales simuladas de ECG correspondientes a una prueba de
esfuerzo. Las señales se obtienen a partir de un simulador al que
se le ha incorporado la capacidad de introducir una memoria del
QT y se ha añadido la contaminación con ruido muscular (RM)
variante en el tiempo. Los resultados muestran que: a) la
delineación del final de la onda T sobre la primera derivación
transformada espacial usando “Análisis de Componentes
Periódicas” ofrece el menor error para valores de SNR bajos en
prueba de esfuerzo, b) los valores obtenidos con el estimador
propuesto resultan mínimamente sesgados para SNR de 25 a 50
dB, siendo la estrategia de menor sesgo la que estima el QT
instantáneo, mediante una corrección previa de los pares [QT,
RR] en el pico la prueba de esfuerzo.Este trabajo se financió con proyectos PID2022-
