New families of interpolating type IIB backgrounds
We construct new families of interpolating two-parameter solutions of type
IIB supergravity. These correspond to D3-D5 systems on non-compact
six-dimensional manifolds which are T^2 fibrations over Eguchi-Hanson and
multi-center Taub-NUT spaces, respectively. One end of the interpolation
corresponds to a solution with only D5 branes and vanishing NS three-form flux.
A topology changing transition occurs at the other end, where the internal
space becomes a direct product of the four-dimensional surface and the
two-torus and the complexified NS-RR three-form flux becomes imaginary
self-dual. Depending on the choice of the connections on the torus fibre, the
interpolating family has either N=2 or N=1 supersymmetry. In the N=2 case it
can be shown that the solutions are regular.Comment: 20 page
Wilson loops stability in the gauge/string correspondence
We study the stability of some classical string worldsheet solutions employed
for computing the potential energy between two static fundamental quarks in
confining and non-confining gravity duals. We discuss the fixing of the
diffeomorphism invariance of the string action, its relation with the
fluctuation orientation and the interpretation of the quark mass substraction
worldsheet needed for computing the potential energy in smooth (confining)
gravity background. We consider various dual gravity backgrounds and show by a
numerical analysis the existence of instabilities under linear fluctuations for
classical string embedding solutions having positive length function derivative
. Finally we make a brief discussion of 't Hooft loops in
non-conformal backgrounds.Comment: 34 pages, 36 figures. Reference added. Final version JHEP accepte
Holographic non-perturbative corrections to gauge couplings
We give a direct microscopic derivation of the F-theory background that
corresponds to four D7 branes of type I' theory by taking into account the
D-instanton contributions to the emission of the axio-dilaton field in the
directions transverse to the D7's. The couplings of the axio-dilaton to the
D-instanton moduli modify its classical source terms which are shown to be
proportional to the elements of the D7 brane chiral ring. Solving the bulk
field equations with the non-perturbatively corrected sources yields the full
F-theory background. This solution represents the gravitational dual of the
four-dimensional theory living on a probe D3 brane of type I', namely of the
N=2, Sp(1) SYM theory with Nf=4. Our results provide an explicit microscopic
derivation of the non-perturbative gravitational dual of this theory. They also
explain the recent observation that the exact coupling for this theory can be
entirely reconstructed from its perturbative part plus the knowledge of the
chiral ring on the D7 branes supporting its flavor degrees of freedom.Comment: Latex, 39 pages, 6 figure
Minimal Flavour Violation with hierarchical squark masses
In a supersymmetric model with hierarchical squark masses we analyze a
pattern of flavour symmetry breaking centered on the special role of the top
Yukawa coupling and, by extension, of the full Yukawa couplings for the up-type
quarks. For sufficiently heavy squarks of the first and second generation this
leads to effective Minimal Flavour Violation of the Flavour Changing Neutral
Current amplitudes. For this to happen we determine the bounds on the masses of
the heavy squarks with QCD corrections taken into account, properly including
previously neglected effects. We believe that the view presented in this paper
altogether strengthens the case for hierarchical sfermions.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure. v2: an equation correcte
Type IIB Holographic Superfluid Flows
We construct fully backreacted holographic superfluid flow solutions in a
five-dimensional theory that arises as a consistent truncation of low energy
type IIB string theory. We construct a black hole with scalar and vector hair
in this theory, and study the phase diagram. As expected, the superfluid phase
ceases to exist for high enough superfluid velocity, but we show that the phase
transition between normal and superfluid phases is always second order. We also
analyze the zero temperature limit of these solutions. Interestingly, we find
evidence that the emergent IR conformal symmetry of the zero-temperature domain
wall is broken at high enough velocity.Comment: v3: Published version. Figures 5 and 6 corrected. 24 pages, 7 figure
Sunitinib in relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: a clinical and pharmacodynamic phase II multicenter study of the NCIC Clinical Trials Group
There are limited effective therapies for most patients with relapsed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). We conducted a phase II trial of the multi-targeted vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) kinase inhibitor, sunitinib, 37.5 mg given orally once daily in adult patients with relapsed or refractory DLBCL. Of 19 enrolled patients, 17 eligible patients were evaluable for toxicity and 15 for response. No objective responses were seen and nine patients achieved stable disease (median duration 3.4 months). As a result, the study was closed at the end of the first stage. Grades 3—4 neutropenia and thrombocytopenia were observed in 29% and 35%, respectively. There was no relationship between change in circulating endothelial cell numbers (CECs) and bidimensional tumor burden over time. Despite some activity in solid tumors, sunitinib showed no evidence of response in relapsed/refractory DLBCL and had greater than expected hematologic toxicity
Vestibular Perception following Acute Unilateral Vestibular Lesions.
Little is known about the vestibulo-perceptual (VP) system, particularly after a unilateral vestibular lesion. We investigated vestibulo-ocular (VO) and VP function in 25 patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) acutely (2 days after onset) and after compensation (recovery phase, 10 weeks). Since the effect of VN on reflex and perceptual function may differ at threshold and supra-threshold acceleration levels, we used two stimulus intensities, acceleration steps of 0.5°/s(2) and velocity steps of 90°/s (acceleration 180°/s(2)). We hypothesised that the vestibular lesion or the compensatory processes could dissociate VO and VP function, particularly if the acute vertiginous sensation interferes with the perceptual tasks. Both in acute and recovery phases, VO and VP thresholds increased, particularly during ipsilesional rotations. In signal detection theory this indicates that signals from the healthy and affected side are still fused, but result in asymmetric thresholds due to a lesion-induced bias. The normal pattern whereby VP thresholds are higher than VO thresholds was preserved, indicating that any 'perceptual noise' added by the vertigo does not disrupt the cognitive decision-making processes inherent to the perceptual task. Overall, the parallel findings in VO and VP thresholds imply little or no additional cortical processing and suggest that vestibular thresholds essentially reflect the sensitivity of the fused peripheral receptors. In contrast, a significant VO-VP dissociation for supra-threshold stimuli was found. Acutely, time constants and duration of the VO and VP responses were reduced - asymmetrically for VO, as expected, but surprisingly symmetrical for perception. At recovery, VP responses normalised but VO responses remained shortened and asymmetric. Thus, unlike threshold data, supra-threshold responses show considerable VO-VP dissociation indicative of additional, higher-order processing of vestibular signals. We provide evidence of perceptual processes (ultimately cortical) participating in vestibular compensation, suppressing asymmetry acutely in unilateral vestibular lesions
Extremal Multicenter Black Holes: Nilpotent Orbits and Tits Satake Universality Classes
Four dimensional supergravity theories whose scalar manifold is a symmetric
coset manifold U[D=4]/Hc are arranged into a finite list of Tits Satake
universality classes. Stationary solutions of these theories, spherically
symmetric or not, are identified with those of an euclidian three-dimensional
sigma-model, whose target manifold is a Lorentzian coset U[D=3]/H* and the
extremal ones are associated with H* nilpotent orbits in the K* representation
emerging from the orthogonal decomposition of the algebra U[D=3] with respect
to H*. It is shown that the classification of such orbits can always be reduced
to the Tits-Satake projection and it is a class property of the Tits Satake
universality classes. The construction procedure of Bossard et al of extremal
multicenter solutions by means of a triangular hierarchy of integrable
equations is completed and converted into a closed algorithm by means of a
general formula that provides the transition from the symmetric to the solvable
gauge. The question of the relation between H* orbits and charge orbits W of
the corresponding black holes is addressed and also reduced to the
corresponding question within the Tits Satake projection. It is conjectured
that on the vanishing locus of the Taub-NUT current the relation between
H*-orbit and W-orbit is rigid and one-to-one. All black holes emerging from
multicenter solutions associated with a given H* orbit have the same W-type.
For the S^3 model we provide a complete survey of its multicenter solutions
associated with all of the previously classified nilpotent orbits of sl(2) x
sl(2) within g[2,2]. We find a new intrinsic classification of the W-orbits of
this model that might provide a paradigm for the analogous classification in
all the other Tits Satake universality classes.Comment: 83 pages, LaTeX; v2: few misprints corrected and references adde
N=1 SQCD-like theories with N_f massive flavors from AdS/CFT and beta functions
We study new supergravity solutions related to large-
supersymmetric gauge field theories with a large number of massive
flavors. We use a recently proposed framework based on configurations with
color D5 branes and a distribution of flavor D5 branes, governed by
a function . Although the system admits many solutions, under
plausible physical assumptions the relevant solution is uniquely determined for
each value of . In the IR region, the solution smoothly
approaches the deformed Maldacena-N\'u\~nez solution. In the UV region it
approaches a linear dilaton solution. For the gauge coupling
function computed holographically is negative definite, in the UV approaching
the NSVZ function with anomalous dimension
(approaching )), and with in
the IR. For , has a UV fixed point at strong coupling,
suggesting the existence of an IR fixed point at a lower value of the coupling.
We argue that the solutions with describe a "Seiberg dual" picture where
flips sign.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figure
Chiral phase transitions and quantum critical points of the D3/D7(D5) system with mutually perpendicular E and B fields at finite temperature and density
We study chiral symmetry restoration with increasing temperature and density
in gauge theories subject to mutually perpendicular electric and magnetic
fields using holography. We determine the chiral symmetry breaking phase
structure of the D3/D7 and D3/D5 systems in the temperature-density-electric
field directions. A magnetic field may break the chiral symmetry and an
additional electric field induces Ohm and Hall currents as well as restoring
the chiral symmetry. At zero temperature the D3/D5 system displays a line of
holographic BKT phase transitions in the density-electric field plane, while
the D3/D7 system shows a mean-field phase transition. At intermediate
temperatures, the transitions in the density-electric field plane are of first
order at low density, transforming to second order at critical points as
density rises. At high temperature the transition is only ever first order.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, v2: Added a referenc
