    Enhancing the Efficiency of Organic Photovoltaics by a Photoactive Molecular Mediator

    High boiling-point solvent additives, such as 1,8-diiodooctane, have been widely used to tune nanoscale phase morphology for increased efficiency in bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. However, liquid-state solvent additives remain in the active films for extended times and later migrate or evaporate from the films, leading to unstable device performance. Here, a solid-state photoactive molecular mediator, namely N(BAI)3, is reported that could be employed to replace the commonly used solvent additives to tune the morphology of bulk heterojunction films for improved device performance. The N(BAI)3 mediator not only resides in the active films locally to fine tune the phase morphology, but also contributes to the additional absorption of the active films, leading to ∼11% enhancement of power conversion efficiency of P3HT:PC60BM devices. Comparative studies are carried out to probe the nanoscale morphologies using grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering and complementary neutron reflectometry. The use of 1 wt% N(BAI)3 is found to effectively tune the packing of P3HT, presumably through balanced π-interactions endowed by its large conjugated π surface, and to promote the formation of a PC60BM-rich top interfacial layer. These findings open up a new way to effectively tailor the phase morphology by photoactive molecular mediators in organic photovoltaics

    Antibody degradation in tobacco plants: a predominantly apoplastic process.

    BACKGROUND: Interest in using plants for production of recombinant proteins such as monoclonal antibodies is growing, but proteolytic degradation, leading to a loss of functionality and complications in downstream purification, is still a serious problem. RESULTS: In this study, we investigated the dynamics of the assembly and breakdown of a human IgG(1)κ antibody expressed in plants. Initial studies in a human IgG transgenic plant line suggested that IgG fragments were present prior to extraction. Indeed, when the proteolytic activity of non-transgenic Nicotiana tabacum leaf extracts was tested against a human IgG1 substrate, little activity was detectable in extraction buffers with pH > 5. Significant degradation was only observed when the plant extract was buffered below pH 5, but this proteolysis could be abrogated by addition of protease inhibitors. Pulse-chase analysis of IgG MAb transgenic plants also demonstrated that IgG assembly intermediates are present intracellularly and are not secreted, and indicates that the majority of proteolytic degradation occurs following secretion into the apoplastic space. CONCLUSIONS: The results provide evidence that proteolytic fragments derived from antibodies of the IgG subtype expressed in tobacco plants do not accumulate within the cell, and are instead likely to occur in the apoplastic space. Furthermore, any proteolytic activity due to the release of proteases from subcellular compartments during tissue disruption and extraction is not a major consideration under most commonly used extraction conditions

    Length -weight relationship and condition factor in the Polyculture of Clarias and Tilapia in concrete tanks

    The experiment was conducted to determine the length weight relationship and condition factor of Clariasgariepinus and Oreochromisniloticus in five different stocking combinations for a period of twelve weeks from 17th July – 9th October, 2009. A total of 1,509 juveniles of C. gariepinus withaverage weight of 24.88g and average length of 14.52cm, and 2,991 juveniles of O. niloticus with average weight of 24.90g and average length of 10.93cm were stocked at 30 fish/m2 in clarias:tilapia ratios of 0:1, 1:0, 1:2, 1:4, and 1:6. The fish were fed at 3% body weight per day (BWD) over a period of 84 days. The monoculture of the two species (Treatments 1 and 2) yielded the lowest growth indices (WG, %WG and SGR), while the performance of clarias at each of the three polyculture systems were higher than those of tilapia. For clarias Treatment 5 (1:6) had the maximum length (17.92±0.37cm) while the monoculture recorded the minimum of 16.60±0.29. The monoculture of tilapia gave the lowest length gain (4.83±0.41cm) while the highest (11.60±0.51cm) for tilapia was recorded in Treatment 4 (1:4). From the regression parameters and the associated statistics (r and SE) for the validation of the models, it is evident that there was a strong positive relationship between length and weight. Even though the relationship was curvilinear there were still higher percentages of regression coefficient in all the treatments and between the species. The SE was also low in all the treatments which further validated the logtransformed models. Therefore, the models are valid for estimating weight of the fishes from the length measurements without necessarily measuring the weight. Stocking ratio of 1:6 should be encouraged for better growth performance.Keywords: Polyculture, length – weight, condition factor, clarias, tilapia, juveniles

    Shotguns vs Lasers: Identifying barriers and facilitators to scaling-up plant molecular farming for high-value health products.

    Plant molecular farming (PMF) is a convenient and cost-effective way to produce high-value recombinant proteins that can be used in the production of a range of health products, from pharmaceutical therapeutics to cosmetic products. New plant breeding techniques (NPBTs) provide a means to enhance PMF systems more quickly and with greater precision than ever before. However, the feasibility, regulatory standing and social acceptability of both PMF and NPBTs are in question. This paper explores the perceptions of key stakeholders on two European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 programmes-Pharma-Factory and Newcotiana-towards the barriers and facilitators of PMF and NPBTs in Europe. One-on-one qualitative interviews were undertaken with N = 20 individuals involved in one or both of the two projects at 16 institutions in seven countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Spain and the UK). The findings indicate that the current EU regulatory environment and the perception of the public towards biotechnology are seen as the main barriers to scaling-up PMF and NPBTs. Competition from existing systems and the lack of plant-specific regulations likewise present challenges for PMF developing beyond its current niche. However, respondents felt that the communication of the benefits and purpose of NPBT PMF could provide a platform for improving the social acceptance of genetic modification. The importance of the media in this process was highlighted. This article also uses the multi-level perspective to explore the ways in which NPBTs are being legitimated by interested parties and the systemic factors that have shaped and are continuing to shape the development of PMF in Europe

    A catalog of Kazarian galaxies

    The entire Kazarian galaxies (KG) catalog is presented which combines extensive new measurements of their optical parameters with a literature and database search. The measurements were made using images extracted from the STScI Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) of Jpg(blue), Fpg(red) and Ipg(NIR) band photographic sky survey plates obtained by the Palomar and UK Schmidt telescopes. We provide accurate coordinates, morphological type, spectral and activity classes, blue apparent diameters, axial ratios, position angles, red, blue and NIR apparent magnitudes, as well as counts of neighboring objects in a circle of radius 50 kpc from centers of KG. Special attention was paid to the individual descriptions of the galaxies in the original Kazarian lists, which clarified many cases of misidentifications of the objects, particularly among interacting systems. The total number of individual Kazarian objects in the database is now 706. We also include the redshifts which are now available for 404 galaxies and the 2MASS infrared magnitudes for 598 KG. The database also includes extensive notes, which summarize information about the membership of KG in different systems of galaxies, and about revised activity classes and redshifts.     Stirling-cycle heat-pumps and refrigerators – a realistic alternative?

    Concerns about the environmental impact of refrigerants used in vapour-compression heatpumps and refrigerators, have prompted the Stirling-Cycle Research Group at the University of Canterbury to investigate the feasibility of low-cost Stirling-cycle machines that use air as the refrigerant. Such machines theoretically have the highest efficiency possible for any practical thermodynamic system, and thus provide a tempting alternative to traditional vapourcompression technology. This paper outlines the working principles of Stirling-cycle heat-pumps and refrigerators, and describes some of the work performed at Canterbury University. Some of the heat-pump development programme results are also presented, and briefly discussed
