Three-loop HTL QCD thermodynamics
The hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) framework is used to
calculate the thermodynamic functions of a quark-gluon plasma to three-loop
order. This is the highest order accessible by finite temperature perturbation
theory applied to a non-Abelian gauge theory before the high-temperature
infrared catastrophe. All ultraviolet divergences are eliminated by
renormalization of the vacuum, the HTL mass parameters, and the strong coupling
constant. After choosing a prescription for the mass parameters, the three-loop
results for the pressure and trace anomaly are found to be in very good
agreement with recent lattice data down to , which are
temperatures accessible by current and forthcoming heavy-ion collision
experiments.Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures; corresponds with published version in JHE
Observation of interlayer phonon modes in van der Waals heterostructures
We have investigated the vibrational properties of van der Waals
heterostructures of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs),
specifically MoS2/WSe2 and MoSe2/MoS2 heterobilayers as well as twisted MoS2
bilayers, by means of ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy. We discovered
Raman features (at 30 ~ 40 cm-1) that arise from the layer-breathing mode (LBM)
vibrations between the two incommensurate TMD monolayers in these structures.
The LBM Raman intensity correlates strongly with the suppression of
photoluminescence that arises from interlayer charge transfer. The LBM is
generated only in bilayer areas with direct layer-layer contact and atomically
clean interface. Its frequency also evolves systematically with the relative
orientation between of the two layers. Our research demonstrates that LBM can
serve as a sensitive probe to the interface environment and interlayer
interactions in van der Waals materials
Egg intake during carbohydrate restriction alters peripheral blood mononuclear cell inflammation and cholesterol homeostasis in metabolic syndrome
Egg yolk contains bioactive components that improve plasma inflammatory markers and HDL profiles in metabolic syndrome (MetS) under carbohydrate restriction. We further sought to determine whether egg yolk intake affects peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) inflammation and cholesterol homeostasis in MetS, as HDL and its associated lipid transporter ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) reduce the inflammatory potential of leukocytes through modulation of cellular cholesterol content and distribution. Thirty-seven men and women classified with MetS consumed a moderate carbohydrate-restricted diet (25%–30% of energy) for 12 weeks, in addition to consuming either three whole eggs per day (EGG) or the equivalent amount of yolk-free egg substitute (SUB). Interestingly, lipopolysaccharide-induced PBMC IL-1β and TNFα secretion increased from baseline to week 12 in the SUB group only, despite increases in PBMC toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) mRNA expression in the EGG group. Compared to baseline, ABCA1 and 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl (HMG)-CoA reductase mRNA expression increased by week 12 in the EGG group only, whereas changes in PBMC total cholesterol positively correlated with changes in lipid raft content. Together, these findings suggest that intake of whole eggs during carbohydrate restriction alters PBMC inflammation and cholesterol homeostasis in MetS

Grape Consumption Increases Anti-Inflammatory Markers and Upregulates Peripheral Nitric Oxide Synthase in the Absence of Dyslipidemias in Men with Metabolic Syndrome
We evaluated the effects of grape consumption on inflammation and oxidation in the presence or absence of dyslipidemias in metabolic syndrome (MetS). Men with MetS (n = 24), 11 with high triglycerides and low HDL and 13 with no dyslipidemia were recruited and randomly allocated to consume daily either 46 g of lyophilized grape powder (GRAPE), equivalent to 252 g fresh grapes, or placebo with an identical macronutrient composition and caloric value as GRAPE for four weeks. After a three-week washout, participants followed the alternate treatment. We measured changes between placebo and GRAPE periods in inflammatory and oxidative stress markers both in circulation and in gene expression. Changes in plasma adiponectin (p \u3c 0.05), interleukin (IL)-10 (p \u3c 0.005) and in mRNA expression of the inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) (p \u3c 0.25) were increased in the GRAPE compared to the placebo period only in those individuals without dyslipidemia. Additionally, plasma IL-10 was negatively correlated with NOX2 expression, a marker of oxidative stress (r = −0.55, p \u3c 0.01), while iNOS expression was positively correlated with the expression of superoxide dismutase 2 (r = 0.642, p \u3c 0.01), a key anti-oxidative enzyme. Grape consumption displayed anti-oxidative and increased anti-inflammatory markers in the absence of the inflammatory milieu associated with dyslipidemias

Valence band excitations in V_2O_5
We present a joint theoretical and experimental investigation of the
electronic and optical properties of vanadium pentoxide. Electron energy-loss
spectroscopy in transmission was employed to measure the momentum-dependent
loss function. This in turn was used to derive the optical conductivity, which
is compared to the results of band structure calculations. A good qualitative
and quantitative agreement between the theoretical and the experimental optical
conductivity was observed. The experimentally observed anisotropy of the
optical properties of V_2O_5 could be understood in the light of an analysis of
the theoretical data involving the decomposition of the calculated optical
conductivity into contributions from transitions into selected energy regions
of the conduction band. In addition, based upon a tight binding fit to the band
structure, values are given for the effective V3d_xy-O2p hopping terms and are
compared to the corresponding values for alpha'-NaV_2O_5.Comment: 6 pages (revtex),6 figures (jpg

Modelling the Interfacial Flow of Two Immiscible Liquids in Mixing Processes
This paper presents an interface tracking method for modelling the flow of immiscible metallic liquids in mixing processes. The methodology can provide an insight into mixing processes for studying the fundamental morphology development mechanisms for immiscible interfaces. The volume-of-fluid (VOF) method is adopted in the present study, following a review of various modelling approaches for immiscible fluid systems. The VOF method employed here utilises the piecewise linear for interface construction scheme as well as the continuum surface force algorithm for surface force modelling. A model coupling numerical and experimental data is established. The main flow features in the mixing process are investigated. It is observed that the mixing of immiscible metallic liquids is strongly influenced by the viscosity of the system, shear forces and turbulence. The numerical results show good qualitative agreement with experimental results, and are useful for optimisating the design of mixing casting processes
