Young people and political action: who is taking responsibility for positive social change?
A human rights perspective suggests that we are all responsible for ensuring the human rights of others, which in turn ensures that our own human rights are respected and protected. A convenience sample of 108 young people (41 males and 67 females) aged between 16 and 25 completed a questionnaire which asked about (a) levels of involvement in political activity and (b) sense of personal responsibility for ensuring that the human rights of marginalised groups (e.g. ethnic minorities, immigrants, lesbians and gay men) are protected. Findings showed that most respondents supported (in principle) the notion of human rights for all, but tended to engage in low key political activity (e.g. signing petitions; donating money or goods to charity) rather than actively working towards positive social change. Qualitative data collected in the questionnaire suggested three main barriers to respondents viewing themselves as agents of positive social change: (1) "It’s not my problem", (2) "It’s not my responsibility", and (3) a sense of helplessness. Suggestions for how political action might best be mobilised among young people are also discussed.</p

QCD axion and quintessential axion
The axion solution of the strong CP problem is reviewed together with the
other strong CP solutions. We also point out the quintessential
axion(quintaxion) whose potential can be extremely flat due to the tiny ratio
of the hidden sector quark mass and the intermediate hidden sector scale. The
quintaxion candidates are supposed to be the string theory axions, the model

SUSY dark matter(s)
We review here the status of different dark matter candidates in the context
of supersymmetric models, in particular the neutralino as a realization of the
WIMP-mechanism and the gravitino. We give a summary of the recent bounds in
direct and indirect detection and also of the LHC searches relevant for the
dark matter question. We discuss also the implications of the Higgs discovery
for the supersymmetric dark matter models and give the prospects for the future

This book takes issue with many of the assumptions around desertification, with cases ranging from Central Asia to West Africa to the Mediterranean to the American West. It is edited by Roy Behnke, an anthropologist with deep knowledge of pastoral areas in North and Southern Africa, West Asia and more, and Michael Mortimore, sadly now late, a development geographer, who knew a huge amount about the drylands of Africa, and particularly northern Nigeria

Dwarf Galaxy Formation Was Suppressed By Cosmic Reionization
A large number of faint galaxies, born less than a billion years after the
big bang, have recently been discovered. The fluctuations in the distribution
of these galaxies contributed to a scatter in the ionization fraction of cosmic
hydrogen on scales of tens of Mpc, as observed along the lines of sight to the
earliest known quasars. Theoretical simulations predict that the formation of
dwarf galaxies should have been suppressed after cosmic hydrogen was reionized,
leading to a drop in the cosmic star formation rate. Here we present evidence
for this suppression. We show that the post-reionization galaxies which
produced most of the ionizing radiation at a redshift z~5.5, must have had a
mass in excess of ~10^{10.6+/-0.4} solar masses or else the aforementioned
scatter would have been smaller than observed. This limiting mass is two orders
of magnitude larger than the galaxy mass that is thought to have dominated the
reionization of cosmic hydrogen (~10^8 solar masses). We predict that future
surveys with space-based infrared telescopes will detect a population of
smaller galaxies that reionized the Universe at an earlier time, prior to the
